Slightly hazy brassy color. Head thins out quickly. Smell has the typical American saison thing going on. Really pronounced yeast. Very spicy and fruity. Taste is very sweet for my taste. The spiciness is more subdued than in the smell. Nice bready malts and a really nice floral aftertaste. If this were a bit less sweet and had a little less alcohol, it would be pretty great. Mouthfeel is severely lacking in carbonation. I think the lack of carbonation raises the perceived sweetness. Overall this is an OK attempt at an American saison. Really can't compete with some of the better Belgian examples. It's flawed, but salvageable if Karbach decides to tweak the recipe.

12 oz can pours a mostly clear gold color that is pretty dark for the style with a pretty average cap of off-white head. Retention and lacing are both very pedestrian as well.
Nose is sharp tangerine and some coriander. Too much spice, doesn’t let any of the delightful lemony wheat and soft yeast found in a good saison shine through.
Taste again shows too much spice additions, it tastes like a strong witbier. The malt is too heavy and sweet as well. The hops and spices clash on top of that and you pretty much get this disaster of a beer. I don’t think I have been this disappointed in Karbach before, definitely been more hits than misses in their young pupilage as a brewery. Not a fan of the Barn Burner...lighten up the malt, throw away the spice jar and up the wheat percentage....basically scrap this and start over. I hate to dis on a good local brewery, but this beer is not even average for the style.

On tap at Liberty Station in Houston, TX
A: Pours a dull, but clear golden/orange color. A two finger white head rises with good retention and lace. A cascading amount of bubbles keep rising to the top. Looks very effervescent.
S: Phenolic yeast, peppery spice, and sweet caramel malt.
T: Follows the nose with a huge phenolic yeast flavor. Big peppery spice as well. Phenolic to the point of plastic. Sweet caramel malt in the finish.
M/D: A medium body that is very carbonated. This needs to be cleaner and dry though. The plastic like phenols makes this a bit harder to drink than I would like.
I love what Karback has been doing, but this misses the mark. A Saison should have a distinct yeast character, which this has. Though the plastic phenols are to much and take over.
