Pours out a dark brown with a thick tan head at first. Smells of toast and spices. No Belgian yeast to speak of. Smells a bit boozy. No Belgian yeast in the flavor either. Not much pumpkin either. Slight spices. Lots of sweetness. Obvious toasty malts. I get a graininess that's becoming a signature flavor profile of Karbach. Mouthfeel is decent but could have more smoothness. Not really into this.

22 oz bomber pours a very clear, deep copper color with a blooming tan head. Fades at an average pace and leaves some nice sheets of lace. Pretty good looking brew...

Nose actually lets the Belgian yeast out to play beyond the typical pumpkin pie spices. Malts have a grainy caramel thing going on in the background and it has a rock-candy-esque sweetness.

Taste is interesting...I am really happy the yeast is as prevalent as it is. The malts are dark, yet not overly bold. A toasty aspect comes out along with some tootsie-roll chocolate. It is kind of like a Belgian Strong Dark Ale with a subtle spice presence, not unlike many BSDA's really. The pumpkin adds a bit of gourdy-ness but does not really give it a whole lot of flavor. Mouthfeel is smooth as silk, something Karbach does well. I cant really tell what the ABV is, but if I had to guess…maybe 8.5 or 9? I really like this beer, I wish it was easier to get, there was a limit of 1 at Spec's and was a bitch to hunt down..

Appearance: Deep garnet red in color, with large, light tan head and profuse Belgian-style lacing and very slight carbonation.

Aroma: Deep aroma of pumpkin spice, brown sugar, caramel, orange rind, and sweet alcohol.

Taste: Opens with a deep caramel note, followed by a wave of spices, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. An subdued undercurrent of pumpkin is present throughout the taste. As the taste progresses, there is a wave of warming sweet alcohol. Later in the taste, toasted malts present. As the taste draws to a close, there is a bit of wood.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, very full, pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: Simply excellent, over-the-top without being heavy-handed, quite wonderful.

Presentation: Packaged in a 64 ounce growler, purchased at The Growler Room in Austin, Texas, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

In Memoriam: Pumpkin (April 1998 - November 22, 2014) - the best cat ever. We will always miss you.

64 oz brown glass screw-top Karbach GROWLER purchased at the Growler Room in Austin, TX, a few days ago. Served into a pilsner glass. Expectations are average given the brewery.

Poured straight into the glass with extra vigor; the growler necessitated a hard pour given its weight. Served cold.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 2 fingers wide. Pale khaki colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Soft and full, with a nice complexion and an even consistency. Light lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is quite good - about 7-8 minutes - impressive for an 8.5% beer coming from a growler.

BODY: Dark amber-brown of below average vibrance. Translucent. Transparent. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears well-carbonated.

Overall, it's a decent looking pumpkin ale with no unique or special characteristics. Nothing stands out.

AROMA: Pumpkin gourd, amber malts, caramel, sticky candied orange peel, brown sugar, and gingerbread. It's surprisingly light on the spices; I'm not finding cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc. Kind of disappointing in a pumpkin ale. And the pumpkin gourd isn't all that prominent.

It's a mellow pleasant aroma of average strength. Strangely subdued for a pumpkin ale; it doesn't commit to the pumpkin flavour enough, and the absence of spices is a letdown.

No overt alcohol, off-notes, hop profile, or yeast character is detectable.

TASTE: Subdued pumpkin gourd, cough syrup (especially on the finish), caramel, amber malts, the signature plum note of Belgian abbey yeast, and a bit of nutmeg. On the sweeter side, to its detriment. The pumpkin is shallow, and I crave more spices. Caramalt dominates, which isn't very interesting. I do like the subtle gingerbread. Christmasy spices evoke the wrong vibe for this autumn ale.

Fairly imbalanced; it's too sweet and lacks a balancing hop bitterness or spiciness. The medicinal cough syrup character is quite bothersome, and ruins the plum notes of the yeast. Brief duration of flavour. Average flavour intensity.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, overly thick, adequately carbonated, and noticeably warm from the alcohol.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

This texture isn't particularly well-suited to the taste. Subpar execution.

OVERALL: Drinkable but underwhelming. Not enough pumpkin for a pumpkin ale. The absence of spices doesn't do it any favors. I wouldn't get this again, and I'm a bit bummed I threw down $20 for a growler fill, but it's not an awful beer. Just a boring pedestrian one. Another mediocre brew from Karbach.
