Karbach Brewing Co.
Texas, United States | website

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
You are in a state of full Hop Delusion, but you knew what you signed up for when you popped this bottle. You knew that it had over 100 IBUs of hop bitterness and that it was dry hopped with insane amounts of Simcoe and Mosaic hops, but you chose to drink it anyway. It's difficult to say if you will ever snap out of it, for you have been smitten with the disorder that many can never overcome.

Look is clear copper body with a couple fingers of off-white head. Spotty lacing on the way down.

Smell is a strong piney, dank aroma which turns to tropical smell from the mosaic that eventually gets filled in with malty notes later on.

Taste is all hops, but it doesn't feel overwhelming because of the big malt presence (although you never really get that sweet flavor). Initially it taste like pine fresh out of the fridge, but as it warms the tropical taste kicks in really hard. Very tasty.

Fell is pretty heavy for an IPA, has some stickiness that falls off into a some-what creamy finish. Bitterness throughout, but balanced very well.

Overall, this is delicious and should be sought by all hop heads. Too bad its not available more regularly, but a nice treat for a little while.

Had on tap at Karbach's bier garten. Wow. Had thought to try Rodeo Clown...but noticed Hop Delusion...and asked for a taste. Just a floral citrus hop bomb. Simcoe comes through but Mosaic just kicks down the door. Just a great IPA that recalls visits to So Cal and New England. Right up there. Will be looking for bottles or cans to go in suitcase home.

Nice and fresh on tap, poured from tap into a fluted snifter. Beautiful head and great curtain lacing. Floral and citrus smell, a it of fresh lemon. The taste was very citrusy, grapefruit, orange, and some white wine. Nice smooth feel. I really enjoyed this beer. This version had three types of hops. Great beer!

Pours a deep orange, with a light brown head with medium retention. Fresh, grassy hop scent. Rich flavors start strong citrus, then fade to pine with a lingering bitter that's nice. Thick mouthfeel, and thick flavors to go along with it.

One of the greatest CANtributors to The CANQuest (tm) is the Mighty JenRay! She hooks me up like nobody's business & knows my CANfinity, so it makes it easy for her to go shopping. It is easy on my end, also, as she only wants APAs/AIPAs/DIPAs or anything with "Hops" in its name. I was recently at a collaboration brew day at Stoudt's & Karbach BC came up in the luncheon convo. Jaws dropped when I stated that I was eminently familiar with them & their beers & could even cite their address: 2032 Karbach Street in HOUTX. I love these guys, plus that is just an easy one to remember. I gotta get back to HOU & see Catherine the Great. Whoops, faulty memory card! That was at the now-defunct Lovejoy's in Austin. Either way, what a doll!

From the CAN: "Brewed In Texas"; "off the Deep end".

Ha! The CAN art looks like Salvador Dali meets craft beer! Soft CANstruction with Boiled Hops (Premonition of the Crack! & Glug!) is the title. Following the aforementioned, it puffed up with two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head that fell rather quickly to wisps, leaving a Persistence of their Memory in their wake. Color was a stunningly beautiful Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper with NE-quality clarity. Nose was pungent with hops and my hophead mouth began to water unCANtrollably! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was cool, minty, refreshing & with just enough fusel alcohol heat to remind me to take my lead foot off of the gas pedal & slow the f**k down! Mmmm. I kid you not, the pine/peppermint/evergreen/wintergreen flavor was just off the hizzy. I felt like I could gargle with this in lieu of mouthwash. There were some underway periods where us hardcore types made Pruno out of anything that would ferment, laced with mouthwash containing alcohol. Man, those were the days. Probably lucky that we didn't go blind ... Back to the present. This was a CANtastic beer! Man, it was big, but the taste was just so minty & cool that it was going down like nothing. Finish was likewise cool & refreshing with that little niggling burn in the back of my throat to remind me not to operate any heavy machinery any time soon. Yowza!

Pours a fuzzy, amber-orange, like fancy honey. The head is white, tightly packed and strikes a pleasant balance between light carbonation and creaminess, though I'd prefer things a tad spongier.

Initial aroma smacks you across the face with dank resin and booze, but pineapple, mango and orangey syrups come to the foreground as things warm up. Some of those tropical notes are lost to the predominant pineyness of the palette, but sweet maltiness halts any overly astringent or boozy notes.

The feel makes me smile - surprising smoothness carries everything nicely without sacrificing that big, dry bite. I've heard that some settling can make the bottom of the can a bit of a chore, but I have no such complaints about the draught.

All in all, everything is much more well-rounded than the labelling might have you believe. Barring their brilliant Bourbon Barrel Hellfighter, this is the best I've had from Karbach.

Wow this is pretty great. Pretty impressed with the few beers I've had from this brewery. Look and smell weren't out of this world, but the taste is. Pours about average for an IPA and smell is about as expected. Floral scent with a noticeable grapefruit character, and maybe a little mango. Taste is excellent. Strong grapefruit flavor, but definitely not overbearing. Hint of the mosaic hops. Complex character. Strong beer at 9%, but very drinkable and goes down smooth. Excellent, and will buy again

Pours somewhere in between gold and amber. The extremely hoppy smell of this one over prepares you in a comforting way when you take your first sip, definite hops but manageable, somewhat drinkable. Apparently high percentage.

if you're into floral mosaic hops, this is the beer for you! nearly perfect.
poured from a growler filled last night at taps and caps in Lewisville, Tx.

pours a nice copper with foamy ecru head. a little hazy. head dissipates fairly quickly and lacing is not particularly evident. (if the lacing was stronger, I MAY have rated this a "5" overall. I'm into the lacing)
ahhhh...the smell...strong floral hop aroma that it maintains throughout the glass. THIS is nearly perfect.
taste...what you smell is what you taste. hops and hops but not crazy just bitter and overly hopped. despite the ABV, the alcohol is not prevalent. BE CAREFUL unless you want to be dozing as you finish the growler :).
Feel...smooth. no astringency. carbonated but too too much so, at all. just right.
overall...pretty dang good. THIS is what an IPA should be. big, big hops flavor and aroma; ABV with punch; good balance but still leaning towards the bitter side.
I give this the "NO SUCK" guarantee. This may be my current favorite beer.

edit 5/11/16: filled and emptied another growler this weekend...just as satisfying as my first growler upon which I wrote the original review.

On tap in Karbach's biergarten. Light color for such a strong hoppy beer. Darker gold with a funky hop bitterness apparent in the smell and taste. A bitter but clean tasting beer, kind of reminds me of a Hop Stoopid by Lagunitas. Grainy taste in the back of the mouth that the bitterness carries well. Leaves you needing more haha. Full bodied beer that you can get full on quickly. Hides alcohol extremely well, watch out boy she'll chew you up hahah. Peace.

On can a little more dark amber,a cacophony of hops cascading into the mouth leaving a Ballast point type of malt on the aftertaste. Great buzz

Pour is a copper, darker orange hue. Excellent tight white bubbles in the head with great lacing.

In the smell, getting plenty pine from the simcoe and some floral and resin. Slightly tropical, getting some subtle pineapple, mango, and passion fruit.

Taste is definitely a simcoe pine foward profile. The hop resin definitely balances with the sweet malt, and the hop resinous is pretty noticable in the back end.

Mouthfeel is quite chewy from all the hop resin and bitterness going on.

Excellent, heavy DIPA from Karbach. I personally think this is their best IPA to date.

This is my first review. This beer made me submit a review after being a long time lurker/user of the info here.

First of all, I got this in my growler earlier today from Whole Foods. People that don't bother putting whether they are drinking from a keg, bottle, or can should not bother posting here because that makes too much difference to overlook.

This is my favorite beer I have had in Texas. Grapefruit and persimmon, maybe tangerine, all on top of a nice piney background. the malt is there, but, it's just underneath it all - a really good balance.

The smell is the same as the taste. The mouthfeel is a little syrupy but smooth enough and the perfect amount of carbonation with it. I don't know why there is a rating for appearing - idgaf about that and you should too!

APPEARANCE: Burnt orange in color with a head that foams up quickly and creates two fingers of off-white foam. The head immediately begins to recede, but at a very slow pace, leaving some part of the head intact for nearly two minutes.

SMELL: Gorgeous, big, floral, fruity aroma here. Mango, orange, lemon, maybe a hint of grapefruit, this smells juicy and vibrant.

TASTE: Just as big and juicy as the nose would suggest. It is a little sweeter than I expected, but the huge hop flavors (grapefruit, lemon, orange, hint of spice and a bit of pine) help to balance it out. Despite the sweetness up front and towards the middle, the back and provides a nice, bitter snap. There is a boatload of malt in the Hop Delusion, but enough hops to keep almost any hop head satisfied.

MOUTHFEEL: Sticky and resinous, sweet in the beginning with a slightly drying bite at the end. The body is medium, but might lean just barely on the bigger side with that big, malty backbone. The light sparkle stays consistent throughout the whole beer, something that is not always the case. The mouthfeel is very lively.

OVERALL: I’ve had quite a few Karbach beers and I have to say that this may be the best I’ve had so far. A very aggressive, beautifully put together melding of hops and malt with just the right touch of carbonation to bring it all together. A fantastic beer.

Serving: 12 oz can (marked "") poured into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Hazy amber gold with a tall, rocky head of frothy white foam - recedes slowly with nice lace.

Smell: Tropical fruit, caramel, resin and dankness.

Taste: Full malt body of grain and honey balanced by big hop spice, resin, mild tropical fruit and dank. Candied orange peel. Cleansing bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, slight hop oiliness and good carbonation.

Overall: A nice big IPA, tending slightly towards sweetness, but still tasty.

Had this for the first time last night, as it was highly recommended to me by a fellow beer enthusiast. As a Houston native, Saint Arnold beers have my heart, but this was my first Karbach Brewing beer I've had. It did not dissapoint. Poured a nice caramel orange color, with about an inch to inch and a half head. What really blew me away of all things was the smell. Lots of flavorful citrus/grapefruit aromas, with a hoppy bite at the end. Taste was good, expected more flavor judging by the smell, but had a decent mix of flavors from the aroma with a small hop finish, and a hint of malt backbone. Good beer, would definitely drink again.

Got this as an extra in a trade. Pours a orange reddish Amber. Thick white head that disappears into a sticky lacing. The aroma is overwhelmingly boozie. I was nervous that it would taste too boozy but it's pretty balanced considering the ABV. I get a lot of pine and a decent amount of booze in the finish. Really good imperial.

The beer is a light amber color. Moderately cloudy. The head is white and pretty big. Lots of lacing, good retention. The aroma has a nice mix of hop flavors with a pretty good amount of malt presence. There’s a fairly dank grapefruit and pine resin foundation. Pineapple juice sweetness. Some mango and orange. Caramel tinged malt sugar character. More malt sweetness comes out as the beer warms. Taste has a lot of malt character. Hop flavor is there, but it’s toned down and a bit bland. Medium bitterness. Piney, grapefruity hop flavor. A bit heavy. Caramel malt flavor. Medium body. Not a bad DIPA but it just doesn’t have it in the taste.

Poured from can into Tulip, pour is dark golden/amber, high foamy head that dissipates within a minute. Smell resiny pine and some citrus. Taste is bitter at first with the malt picking up the back end. Nice balanced DIPA. Feels thick in the mouth, so all around a very good beer

Bought a couple of single cans at World Market in Round Rock, Tx.

Pours a vibrant orange color. Sticky off white lacing remains for the duration. Just a very pretty looking beer.

A dank, deliciously hoppy smelling beer. Some weedyness, tropical fruit, and sweet malt...a great balance.

Taste follows scent perfectly. A pretty intense blast of tropical fruit with nice finish of sweet malt to balance this one out.

This is a very good DIPA. On par with some of the best Texas DIPAs I've had.

Great job Karbach!

I really like this beer. I'm a decent fan just because I support local breweries, but this hits the spot with my palate. I'm s home brewer myself and can instantly pick out the mosaic and simcoe. I just wanna say, great job Karbach, another great offering.

Pours an amber color with a very thick foamy head. Head retention and lacing are excellent. Nice fresh, citrus, piney aroma. Hints of malty caramel as well. Great malt to hop transition. Taste biscuits, resin, caramel and slight citrus. Moderately astringent at the end. Medium bodied and low carbonation. Very good beer for sure.

Holy sh*t. Best Karbach IPA to date. Hopadillo and Weekend Warrior fans will love the transition. Reminds me slightly of LP Yellow Rose but better because I can get it cold, in a can, and with higher ABV.
