At Celestial Cafe

Clear gold, way too clear for an unfiltered beer. Fingerswidth head held for a short time before skimming and skulking to a thin collar. All foam was completely gone when I finished which is disappointing for a saison.

Initially Revival had all the smells of a good saison - spicy yeast phenols, mild herbal hops, and a sweet malt character underneath. As it warmed it began to taste like buttered waffles.

Again Revival tastes like a fair saison at first with a fair balance of spicy phenols, sweet pale malt and an earthy, herbal hop in back. But as it warmed up I got more diacetyl. There wasn't a ton of butter but because it wasn't supposed to be there at all it really irked me.

Could have been good but it seemed sloppy.

On-tap 11/13/2011 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a bright yellow/gold color, with a short dense off-white head that fades very slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, Belgian yeast, some spice and some light caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat, Belgian yeast, and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. Then some spices come in along with some very mild sweetness. The hops presence is good for the style and creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer worth drinking for a long time.

Appearance: Pours a light blonde, gold color with a substantial head into a standard pint glass. The head disappears quickly, lining the glass with delicate lacing.

Smell: Banana, clove with belgian yeast and a bit of a citrus note as well.

Taste: Much of what I get in the nose with hints of banana and spice with a belgian character.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a bit too much carbonation for the style in my opinion. Still goes down easily and drinks well.

Overall: This is a solid saison from Revival and one that I would try again for sure. Certainly not my favorite but a good interpretation of the style and worth drinking.

Drank on-tap at Nick's On Broadway, Providence, RI
Served in a cervoise

The beer poured a crystal-clear amber color and was topped by a fluffy, bright white head. I had a really difficult time believing that this was unfiltered. The head deposited thin, drippy sheets of lacing along the glass.

Belgian-like spicy and phenolic yeast notes were apparent in the aroma. Sweet and slightly tart. Hint of bready malts. Lemon notes were also noticeable. Some bubblegum came through as well.

The flavor profile was a bit rough around the edges. A touch of caramel malt sweetness appeared on the front end. Spicy in the center with subtle notes of white pepper. A Belgian-like yeastiness was present but it could have been kicked up a notch or two. Citrus notes were apparent as well. The finish was intensely hoppy, bitter and dry. The hops were earthy and somewhat piney.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied with a fine, moderate effervescence. Creamy and slick on the palate.

I have no doubt that the brewers were shooting for an Americanized version of a saison, but this seemed like a beer gone awry. If they dialed up the Belgian yeast character, dialed down the hoppy bitterness and actually kept this unfiltered, this might be a respectable beer.

Procured a growler from a co-worker who attended a gourmet food and beer pairing. Served in my Maudite tulip. Pours a dull, burnt orange with a hazy clarity and a loose, one inch off-white head that dissipates into an oily skim and a tight speckled band around the edges. Some spots of lacing, but poor adhesion. Nose express clove, coriander, candi sugar and a pleasant eathy aroma. Taste follows nose; however, there's a slightly medicinal bitterness that is revealed towards the back and gradually dissipates between quaffs. Mouthfeel is medium-light in consistency with a trace of oiliness and a pleasant, crisp carbonation. Overall, a very nice domestic saison that I can definitely see adding to my line-up of regulars. I'm pretty excited to see another local brewery establish itself in RI.
