This Cascadian Dark Ale, otherwise know as our Double Black IPA, emerged stylistically from the Pacific North West. It has an IPA backbone with a "special blend" of choice roasted malts combined with a hard hitting matchup of hops, knocking this beer into a new weight class. Dry hopped and unfiltered for maximum flavor and punch. Enjoy it with a trainer!

I'll admit, this was only a 4 oz. sampling at Mews Tavern in RI but I'll give it review anyway.

It was dark as advertised and I really couldn't get a sense of the head. It hid the 8% ABV pretty well and was well balanced between the 85 IBUs and the malts. The only thing that holds this brew back for me is the mouth fell. I thought it was a bit on the thin side for my taste but I'm sure some others will be fine with it.

Definitely worth a try. (449 characters)

Pours a black color with a slight ruby color around the edge of the glass in the light. Head retention is really good and the nutty, coffee brown head showed a wall of lace.
Smell was of an interesting combination of roastiness and lemony pledge. Chocolate, nuttiness, and pine are also present in the nose.
The dark, bitter chocolate leads the malt character while the chinook and sorachi hops meld an interesting, sweet hop flavor.
Feel is a bit on the lighter side for the style and the carbonation is moderate. Wish there was a bit more bitter on the back end of the sip.
Overall, I liked the interesting hop profile. That's what drew me to this beer. Although the lack of overall bitterness held this beer back some, I still enjoyed it. (746 characters)

Beautiful black brew, topped with a nice dark tan head. Excellent retention and lacing.

Juicy and herbal aroma. Individual hop notes are a challenge to pick out, melding together amid a subdued roasty and caramel background.

Hops don't translate to the palate cleanly, although they carry plenty of juice and herb. Pineapple mango and grass stand out, but there's an earthy staleness that detracts. The roasty malt is so subdued one wonders why exactly they went with a black IPA at all.

Smooth and extremely drinkable. Lively with some sting. Excellent for the ABV. (569 characters)

Fresh sample bottle from salesman. Notched best-by date was October, contract-brewed at Cottrell:

Didn't take notes while tasting it, but my boss and I thought it was a pretty solid beer. Not sure why they market it as Chinook vs Sorachi Ace, because there was very little dry hop presence, but the beer was enjoyable. Creamy body, nice roasty flavors with vague citrusy hop notes. (382 characters)

From the 12 fl. oz., bottle. Sampled on February 7, 2014.

The pour is a very dark brown and just about black with a lingering off-white head. Looks like a craft beer,

The aroma is pretty straight forward. Lots on sweetness.

Moderate body

DaRK BRWN POR UINTO NTHJ GLASS.

The pour is quite nice with its dark brown to near black color. Lingering off-white head. Really fresh aroma with an good fruit hop character as well as a clean malt note. Licorice. The body is medium. The taste has a kind of malted licorice thing going on but generally smooth., (557 characters)
