No label information. Brewed in the style of an Oatmeal Stout aged in bourbon barrels, available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft. 4th anniversary release, hand numbered, wax sealed bottles.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter glass.
(Appearance) Pours a creamy frothed head of a full tan color over a very dark brown body. Retention is good and lacing is light and spotty. 4.25
(Smell) Strong lactic sourness, subtle chocolate aromas with slight bourbon and oak tannins in the background. Potency is moderate. 3.75
(Taste) Moderate acidic sourness with slight tangy fruit qualities alongside a light residual sweetness, finishing on a subtle punctuated note of roasted grain, oats and chocolate. Little to no bourbon barrel characteristics come through in the flavor. Works quite nicely and has a very enjoyable balance of sourness and remaining stout characteristics. 4
(Mouthfeel) Texture is tangy, clean, silky, moderately dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a modestly crisp finish. Body is short of medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly acidic sour and roasted bitter grains over sweet. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.75
(Overall) While I've had my fair share of sour dark ales, I haven't dabbled much in Soured stouts, so this was an appreciated experiment that I expected would gain nicely with time, and I was not disappointed. The sourness is quite nicely developed, generating a moderate puckering acidity and funk, contrasting nicely with the subtle stout characters of roast and bitter chocolate for a multilayered, but highly drinkable experimental beer. I did not pick up much on the bourbon barrel aging of this beer and the body was not very suggestive of an imperial stout base. Otherwise, a nice debut entry in this series, and a nice beer to seek out from this brewery. 4

Purchased this from a local bottle shop near me. The price was modeled after that of other rare bourbon barrel sours i have enjoyed in the past which led me to have the impression this may be some small batch limited addition beer that I may regret not trying. I don't feel that way now.
Deep Brown with foamy tan head smells of tart funk with oak, hints of chocolate. Taste was nothing special and a bit all over the place for my liking.
Went into it open minded, gave it time to grow on me but just did not live up to my standards to be claimed a good sour beer. I also find myself a bit bothered this has been called a "happy accident" yet the cost reflects confidence that simply shouldn't be there.
Cant recommend this one to anyone.

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 13.99. No bottling date but this was released 10/2015. Served in a goblet.
Pours near black with deep crimson edges when held to the light. The initial two finger cap of tan head quickly fades to a rocky veneer and full halo, leaving large latticed sheets of lace.
Smells of chocolate, barrel funk, rolled oats and caramel. Every now and the I lift the glass to my nose and get a quite pleasant sweet stout but other times a less desirable funk greets me.
Flavors are a disjointed hodgepodge. Sour oak, cocoa, slight char, toasted oats, vague bourbon, wet wood and burnt sugar. As in the aroma I get some simple oatmeal stout notes but the sour seems much more off and accidental than complementary in any way.
Body is on the light side of medium but feels fairly creamy. Softly prickly carbonation. Aftertaste of sour wood, burnt cocoa and faint caramel.
Red Hare's Sour Sticky Stout is a huge miss for my tastes. I was able to choke down about 8 ounces in my fruitless search for some more pleasant nuances but had no interest in finishing the bottle. I'll admit to some resentment over my suspicions that I was charged a "rare barrel aged sour" price for a beer that was actually an accidental example of poor quality control and should not have been released in the first place...

look: Deep dark brown, nearly opaque with some ruby highlights. Foamy tan head that mostly sticks around. looks like a stout alright.
smell: but it doesn't smell like one. More like a sour with some roasty coffee hints. some tart funk with oak.
taste: citrusy tart funk dominates the stout characters. they're there but certainly submissive.

As perhaps the most bi-polar style in current existance, the "sour stout" with all its personalities rides into the Red Hare Brewery and sets up residence. With equal parts sour and roast, one sip suggests complexity and the next complication.
And that struggle begins with what the eye tells us as the zesty stout acts like bubbly champagne despite its deep and dark austere. As the nose hovers over the glass, the scent of sour grape plays off a toasty, roasty coffee-like backdrop. And once the residual malt sweetness grazes the tongue, its supple with burnt caramel and a pep of chocolate.
But over the middle, the sweetness drops out swiftly, leaving only the char of oak, coffee and cocoa in its wake. It leaves room for the sourness of red wine vinegar, tart and tangy merlot, lemon, lime, sour green apple and sour grape to command the late palate.
Medium-light for sour ale, but certainly thin for stout, the schizophrenic beer alternates with roasted bitterness in alternating sips with piquant acidity as if two beers were living in the same glass, battling the tastebuds for attention. That fine line between complexity and complicated is being trampled upon right now.

Appearance: pitch black, brown edges, solid off white head.
Aroma: Heavy oak, dark fruit, light acidity, caramel covered toast. Palate follow, more roast/coffee. Light but present acidity.
Mouthfeel: dry without a harsh roast.
Overall: I'll take this happy accident.

Poured from a waxed bomber, bought from the brewery's 4th anniversary party. Courtesy of a friend.
Appearance: Deeeeeep, dark brown bordering on black. Tan colored, one-finger head. Nice lacing.
Smell: An immediate whiff of a slightly vinegar sourness followed closely by an amazing oaky, bourbony sweetness. There is some chocolate hiding in there, but it's mostly covered by the bourbon .
Taste: The sourness hits immediately, it's almost vinegary, but not quite. Very nice. The bourbon comes right afterwards to caress your palate with a nice vanilla sweetness, which is then followed by an oaky char that complements a slight hint of cocoa powder. The sourness and bourbon steal the show for sure.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body, with medium carb. It goes down smooth, despite the amount of sour and bourbon notes hitting your palate.
Overall: I believe this is Red Hare's first sour, and it was by accident? I am blown away by this beer. It's a fantastic first sour for a brewery that I've never really been impressed with. GG Red Hare.
