Poured from a 12 oz can into a clear glass mug. Canned on 04/25/14 on bottom of can. Received from good friend Erinn on a recent trip through Charlottesville -- thanks bud.

A: Oddly not really brown but more os a darker amber with nice 1-finger off-white head with average retention and an abbreviated collar of lacing around the top of the pour.

S: Despite its amber appearance, the roastiness and chocolate notes of a brown ale are in there coupled with a pretty stout hops presence, mainly earthy, herbal, and light orange citrus notes. The malt backbone is bready with a chocolate rye toast crust aroma. No real yeast aromas.

T: I like the flavor of this beer although the alcohol is a bit too obvious. The malt is the main performer, bringing more of that dark toast/bread crust flavor which is moved by the chocolate and light roasted notes. THe hops then create an interesting herbal and orange/grapefruit citrus counterbalance in the finish. Mild-to-moderate bitterness and a hint of alcohol burn on the way down.

M: I like the mouthfeel of this beer -- it is creamy and layering without seeming heavy or cloying and it finishes pretty dry for the heft. The body is medium as is the carbonation.

O: Red Hare Watership Brown is a pretty good American brown ale but I think it would be even better if the alcohol were ramped down about 1.5-2% with a nice high mash temp to keep the same dextrinous feel.

Visited the brewery for a Penn State-Atlanta membership event. All beers were available on tap.

Favorite style, and had this one first. Poured a brownish amber with a tan head of average retention.
Aroma: Had some bready scents and a little caramel and chocolate..
Taste: Had some roasted malts that start mildly sweet but finishes dry.
I liked this beer, crisp, creamy, sweet up front but a dry and bitter ending..

And the "Red Hare" attitude is alive and well in their Watership Brown ale that carries a dedicated amber-red hue rather than the typical brown that's expected from the style. So, what else does this dark ale have in store....?

Bright bread crust, light chocolate and toffee greet the olfactories and early palate as its casual sweetness grips the taste buds as well as the nose. With a faint character of tree bark, nutty notes and caramel, the beer's first impressions are both soothing and robust.

As the flavors settle in, the middle saturates with seared molasses, medium toast, pecan, chocolate, kilned barley and a subtle rise of hops. With no real fruit character, the taste becomes decidedly "American" as the ale delves into finish.

Robust in texture, the toasted creaminess of the dark ale casually casts away its sweetness and carbonated creaminess; in favor of drier, toastier and a sharply bitter finish that's partly broad and spicy but is also acute and grapefruity. its dryness seems to elevate its apparent alcohols and facilitates its dryish tone.

Its surprising crimson hue is a shade shy of brown as the beer may become more famely known as a savory red ale as much as any brown. Simmering with a swirling sheet the beer continues to captivate the eye as much as the spirit.
