A growler from the Lincoln in Snellville (welcome to the 'hood!). This is by far the best beer I've had from Red Hare. Roasty, juicy, a bit sweet, quite hoppy with great citrus bitterness, and a bit of woody tannins along with some sweet licorice root. Very dark with a great head. This is a moreish beer that kept drawing me back for another sip. Absolutely delightful!

Growler from The Beer Growler near the Red Hare brewery. Pours nearly pitch black with a brownish edge appearing only under bright light. Topped by big, frothy, light brown head. This dies down rather quickly to a durable top coat. An ample amount of sticky lacing is left on the glass.

Aroma: IPA credentials are intact with the powerful aroma of floral and citrus hops, but some roasted malts are there too and bring with them hints of caramel, cherries and dark fruits, plus a faint suggestion of smoky coffee. 9% ABV apparent, rendering this a bit more boozy than ideal. Roasted malts more evident after warming.

T: The dark roasted malts are more prominent in tasting, and the hops are more in balance so that it is not overly bitter. Very rich flavor with a better integration of malt and hops than usual for style (Black IPA). Has a slightly overdone trace of smoke/charcoal. IBU seems notably lower than expected for style or from the hoppy aroma, especially in the finish and aftertaste, but this is not a bad thing. Hints of dark chocolate, expresso, licorice, black pepper, and burnt toast.

M: near full body with soft, low carbonation; no harshness from the high ABV but some warmth; fairly smooth.

O: Despite some reservations, this 'big' beer is a very good black IPA worth seeking out. Unusual for a dark beer, I recommend serving this near refrigerator cold.

On draft, at Taco-Mac John's Creek, GA.

Served in cold 20 oz mug.

A: Dark pour, inch of head, tannish foam. thick lacing during the drink.

S: Chocolate. Some booze, coffee, but mostly chocolate.

T: Similar to the nose.

M: Bitter (as is the name) and very dry. Nice beer. Don't really feel the alcohol as much as you can smell it.

O: I would buy this for the fridge at home. Would like to try it with a strong flavored meal, as the brewer suggests.
