Normally, I'm not a fan of "fruit" beers. They tend to be too syrupy or sweet for my liking. If I want a sweet, fruity drink I'll go for some wine or a mixed drink. Anyways, it was Fall and decided to get into the Fall mood by trying some of the Forbidden Fruit beer at the Local 7 bar. I surprisingly really liked this beer.

It reminded me of a cider that was lightly carbonated and not too sweet. Most ciders I have drunk taste too much like apple candy for my liking. But for the Forbidden Fruit you got some nice apple notes but a bit of hops from the beer. It was a pleasant, easy to drink beer. I hope Red Hare comes out with this beer again next Fall.

Spiced apple farmhouse ale made "with Willamette, Chinook, Cascade and Falconers Flight hops" and north Georgia apples.

Feel: excellent, with soft but very lively carbonation. Crisp.

Aroma: vanilla and cinnamon with a light and bready malt. Apple pie anyone?

Flavor: a load of cinnamon dominates. More sweet than tart.but pretty good balance.

16 ounce pint - North River Tavern in Roswell, Georgia.

Appearance: Displays a clear, gold body with a smallish, white head.

Smell: Sugary-scented cinnamon aroma and a big, palpable apple scent atop the far lesser, far more mild malts.

Taste: A light touch of pale malted barley, some delicately toasted bread. Predominately, the flavor is made up of the cinnamon sugar and apple notes. Very mild vanilla creeping in. Heavyish cinnamon on the drying finish.

Mouthfeel: Falls just shy of medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Well, it's one of the better Red Hare offerings, I'll give it that. Not much of a showing from the saison underneath, but, the apple and spice additions are rather emboldened.

I tried this beer not knowing anything about it. It was on tap and all i knew about it was that it was a Saison. Expecting a typical saion, I was really thrown off from my first sip. A little bit of apple but mostly cinnamon. It did not taste at all like your typical saion. This beer tasted like I was drinking big red chewing gum or water down goldschlagger. I have to admit, it was pretty tough for me to finish 12 oz. of this. I wanted to finish it as soon as possible so I could get something else.

A - Light color, lightly carbonated with a head that fades quickly.

S - Apple & spices are well pronounced on the nose, the scent made me expect some sweetness in taste

T - Apple and spices up front, but lacking the sweetness I was expecting (a pleasant surprise). An aftertaste of farmhouse/saison yeast lingers on the tongue.

M - Light body, light carbonation. Drinks easy.

O - This is a great sessionable saison for the autumn. It's packed with the apple and spice flavors of fall, yet doesn't have the sweetness and heaviness of many other fall seasonals (pumpkins, marzens). Very unique and enjoyable.
