Straffe Hendrik is a Bitter Tripel Ale of 9% abv. The beer was originally from Bruges and brewed in Bruges by brewery De Halve Maan.

In 1981, Henri Maes and his daughter Véronique followed the demand of the mayor and created a strong blond beer for the inauguration of the statue of Sint-Arnoldus, the saint of all beer-brewers. However, the beer became so popular, that the demand for the beer continued. It was given the name of Straffe Hendrik (Strong Hendrick), since it was a rich and strong beer.

Today, Straffe Hendrik is the last authentic Tripel Ale of Bruges.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into tulip. Best by 16-05-2025.
A: Pours a clear golden hue with very active carbonation jets fueling a 2-3 inch billowy cream-colored head with excellent retention.
S: Lovely fruity esters hit first with spiced apple, banana, pear, and clove. White pepper, honey, and hints of orange, peach, and herbal anise. Quite complex!
T: Apple, banana, clove are immediately followed by bitter hop elements of earthy spice, herbal anise, and grass. Mixing in later are caramel malt, orange zest, soft lemon, white pepper, and hints of ginger and mango. Quite a depth of character.
M: Light medium body. Delicate fruit and malt sweetness and moderately strong bitter hops provide an interesting balance. Dry throughout and lingers nicely on the palate.
D: A hopped tripel provides an interesting twist on the style. Layered and complex. Very nice brew to contemplate and savor.

330 ml dark brown glass bottle. 9% abv.
Opens with a bit of smoke. Pours vividly with a 5-6 finger white head with quite stubborn retention.
Opaque golden amber colour with high microbubble carbonation.
Smell is bready, bit of tangy yeast, bit metallic in a clean, decent, good way.
Taste, yeast, bread, hoppy bitterness, good lasting aftertaste. Although sugar is added, and triple is about 3x the malt, the hops stay in the taste..
This beer has a good consistency, belanced mouthfeel, a little bit too drinkable for the 9% abv.
But too be honest, I have my doubts if this is really a triple. It lacks the malty and floral notes for that. I deem it more a Belgian Strong Blonde Ale.

Poured from a 330ml bottle.

Pours a cloudy orange with a volumous off white head . The smell is of funky Belgian yeast , hops and a general air of a witbeer. The taste is strongly of Belgian yeast and orange with a citrus acid tang , medium bitterness and slight alcohol with an almost floral sweetness coming out as it warms .
Creamy and sparking in the mouth , very satisfying mouthfeel.
Overall, the yeast goes on for days on the palette combined with the orange and bitterness works really well.

Poured from a 750m bottle at fridge temp. Pours a nice opaque orange with an abundance of slightly off-white head. The nose is refreshing and smooth. Pears, orange, vanilla, banana bread, and a slight spice.

The taste is so smooth. Caramel, apple, banana, slight oaky leather note, raisins, and malty greatness. Definitely a floral note coming through over a bit of time. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and somewhat dry. The aftertaste is fruit and malts.

Pint and 9.4oz bottle. Corked and caged. Label has the date of '22-04-2023'.
Initially clear, pale amber colored body. Two finger of off white head upon pouring, this stays around as a bubbly cap and high ring. Leaves behind a few tendrils of lacing.
Aroma of dark fruit (prune and raisin), banana, cloves, and caramel.
Taste is toasted bread, prune and raisin, with a bit of cherry, touch of smoke, and with banana and cloves emerging late. Peach and pear arrive in the aftertaste.
Medium mouth feel, with some syrup. Higher ABV% well hidden. Good carbonation.
Provides me with another reason to go to Bruges.

750ml bottle into a tulip. No freshness dating.

Splendid looking beer. Massive foamy white head over a hazy dark honey body. Sweet and warming taste with some dry and bitter notes.
