APPEARANCE - Cloudy light amber with a 2-finger head that dissipates.

AROMA/SCENT - Sweet, herbaceous.

TASTE - Sweet, herbaceous. A bit boozy.

MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Good carbonation. A bit gooey.

VALUE - Not too bad.

OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - Not my favorite. A sipping beer only.

Appearance: Pours reddish amber, nice frother white head that resolves to fine lace

Smell: Hint of hay/barnyard, malt and plenty of yeast, over ripe apples/pears, fruity esters

Taste: Pleasant fruit forward (apple/pear/cider like), nice malty throughout without becoming syrupy, bready, very mild hop like astringency with adequate carbonation

Mouthfeel: Creamy, Adequate carbonation and hops to prevent from becoming too malty

Drinkability: Pleasant, easily quaffed tripel with well hidden alcohol.

Half-moonman proves to be a total jerk as this is one of the worst gushers I've opened. Pours a hazy amber with dense two finger thick off-white head, settles slowly to a half inch with a sheet of clumpy lace halfway down the glass. Smell: caramel apple, pear, graham cracker, pepper note. Taste: soft sweet red apple, cooked pear, dried sugared apricot, herbal and peppery notes. Alright.

A: Pours a lovely golden color with just the faintest of a hint of haze. There is an enormous three finger head that just keeps going and going like a fluffy white cloud. It never seems to want to break, and as it very slowly does the lacing left behind is amazing.

S: Belgian yeast, spices (coriander and clove perhaps), orchard fruits and malt.

T: Follows the nose for the most part, though I found the fruits come across more strongly than the spices. There is a sweetness to the beer that works very well.

M: medium bodied with an appropriate amount of carbonation...call it light/medium. As mentioned before there is a long finish to this beer. It starts sweet and the proceeds to a short bitter and then ends dry.

O: I quite enjoyed this beer. It is a good example of a very drinkable Belgian Tripel. De Halve Maan has hit the nail on the head with this beer. Definitely worth seeking out, and revisiting.

Poured into snifter.
Excellent hazy amber with huge off-white head, endless & respectable retention, never dies to nothingness :). Very complex and tender aroma - sunny malts, slight honey, delicate yeasts, spices & citrus. Flavour is semisweet, round, unlikely alcoholic, fruity to neutral malt palate. Oily with moderate drinkability. Anyway, excellent & mighty tripel.

Blind Tasting Tripel Project of Fall 2015
L coarse bubbled slightly off-white head of 1.5 fingers, dies down to rim, almost clear red-golden body with lots of medium sized bubbles rising to the top
S pears, banana, peppery notes, slight fruit dominance, underlying malt sweetness, not too complex but very harmonic
T rather clean with some fruit (banana), nice peppery and a little too boozy aftertaste, dry
F light to medium body, plenty of carbonation, burpy, very drinkable, some warming alcohol
O Simply a great Tripel. Nothing too special just greatly representing the style on the fruitier side

Soft clove and barnyard funky graininess meet the nose with peppercorns, bread and spice. The flavor is quite zesty and spicy with a front of cloves and peppercorns. Mid palate perceives more bread and lemon as this finishes with Apple and pear. The feel is very easy and light with a slight dryness.

It may be the case that I go for a more defined beer in type/style/genre. Compared to many of the other trippels (Belgium only, not American versions), this one just seemed a bit more subtle in every department. Less fruit in the start, though it does stay on the finish. Less nose than others. A disclaimer: my nose may be tainted by a preference for severely hopped beers locally. Color, head, mouthfeel all fine and as expected for style.

750 ml bottle into chalice, best before 12/4/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep gold color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lacing cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big peach, pear, orange, apricot, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, candi sugar, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, earthy hops, and moderate pale malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big peach, pear, orange, apricot, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, candi sugar, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of peach, pear, orange, apricot, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, candi sugar, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity of fruity/spicy yeast flavors, earthy hops, and moderate pale malt sweetness; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome tripel style. Great complexity of fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors with moderate pale malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

a very sturdy take on the belgian tripel from a brewery who has yet to really miss for me. this is a very clear and amber tinted colored version, in some ways lighter (clarity) and in some ways more grainy (darker) than others. nice off white head holds in my glass and leaves spider web lacing as i drink on it. its got a weird nose for the style though, a bit of burnt sugar, but also a funny staleness. not the typical green bottle skunk, but something else, an almost german dusty grain element thats unfamilar in belgian beer to me, and isnt all the way appealing, but not enough to turn me off. the flavor of the beer is great though, long sweet but smooth grainy front end. some oats in here lend body, while the majority wheat malt does more of the flavoring. the yeast is subtle in this too, not as "belgian" as other belgians, less fruity esters, maybe fermented at a lower temperature, but the strain appears active enough to eat through most of the sugar here, and the finish is dryer than many tripels on the market. carbonation is there, but its not quite effervescent, and the added body from the slightly heavier grains make it drink a little heavier than it really needs to. although, the alcohol is extremely well hidden, and not a factor in lesser drinkability at all. i think i like their quad better, and i definitely like their wild version of this better, but its a nice take on the style.

A: moderately hazy, orange-amber liquid... keeps a nice, thin, pillowy cap that persists for quite awhile... no lace

S: pale malt, floral alcohols... kind of typical aromas for a Belgian tripel, mildly fruity... banana bread dough (minus nuttiness)... bit of a piss-pants (ammonia?) tone later on

T: big fruit (orange, banana) backed by a circus peanut / marshmallow yeast/malt blend... bit of bitterness and mild spice on the end, lingers, phenolic quality slowly builds... certainly a malty undertone

M: pretty round, plushy soft... around medium-bodied, dry... carbonation exhibits a touch of that 'expanding' effect in the mouth... man, this damn soft! alcohol only faintly warming

O: this totally tastes like something else I've had many times before - Westmalle?!... well made, but not distinct

Golden-orange colour, two finger fluffy head that recedes to a sticky lace in five minutes or so, and a tiny white foamy cap floating about.
Traditional smell, with spicy yeasts, mild banana, some apple and pear, oranges (with peel), Belgian sugars, a hint of warm alcohol.
Taste starts with nice floral notes, spices, and tons of honey and caramel, a sweetness that will dominate the rest of this brew (there's also some malty sweetness there, better off without). Apple jam, sweet orange juice, a small tropical note, ripe white grapes. Nice prickly spices, with pepper and ginger, faint anise. Green notes push back the sweetness a bit in the finish, along with a mild bitterness, so the aftertaste is balanced and nice, with apple, some lingering spices and warm alcohol.
Medium body and carbonation, a bit creamy.
A great tripel, tasty, just a tiny bit too sweet.

Appearance - dark, hazy golden colour with very little trace of white head

Smell - Apples, honey citrus

taste - much the same as the aroma, I'm getting apples, honey, caramel

mouthfeel - medium bodied, low carbonation - almost flat, slight sweetness, flavors linger on the back a good amount, very easy to drink - you wouldn't guess this came in at 9%

Overall - solid tripel, enjoyable, this could have used a bit more carbonation for my liking but otherwise a good beer. This bottle I believe is approaching the end of it's 'best by' useful life, I'm wondering what a fresher bottle might taste like.

33cl bottle (13-04-2016) into a tulip. Clear golden color, three finger white head with ok retention and lacing. Sweet smell with citrus, apple, yeast and malt. The taste begins with sweet bisquit malts and sour apples, followed by fresh lemons, finishing with a dry hoppy aftertaste with some spice that became sweeter after warming in the glass. Slightly alcoholic taste. Medium body, high stingy carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. Overall a very drinkable, highly enjoyable tripel. Would be a very good choice on a hot day.

Appearance: Clear copper color with some fairly large particles floating about and one finger of off-white head that fades slowly with a thick curtain of lace.

Aroma: Bready, ripe fruit, toasted malt, some yeast

Taste: Candy sweetness, toasted malt, honey and some yeast funk up front, then some herbal bitterness leading to an estery, brown sugar sweet finish.

The Rest: A really good triple, nice body and mouthfeel, just a tad on the sweet side and too much sediment to keep it from being fantastic.

A) Pours with a two finger thick, white head. Golden body color with visible sediment. Head slowly settles. Tight, sticky lacing on the drink down.
S) Clover, banana, orange peel, and floral
T) Malty sweetness pairs with subtle caramel, some banana and citrus notes, and some apple.
M) Medium body. Creamy. Fairly smooth. Alcohol warmth in the finish with a subtle tannic feel.
O) A delicious brew! Besides the visible sediment this is a fantastic beer, making it easy to overlook the aesthetics.

Poured from 11.2oz brown bottle into a goblet at Brasserie Beck (Washington, DC). Reviewed from notes.

A: Orangey-golden with healthy 1-finger white, tightly bubbled head with good retention and a nice formation of foamy lace.

S: Slightly solventy alcohol, with some candylike sweetness, and light herbal, grassy noble hops. Some light banana yeast esters.

T: The flavor is unfortunately dominated by sweet and solventy alcohols that leave a berry, candy flavor. The hops are minimal, a bit of bitterness and some light grassy notes. The maltiness is fairly crisp. There are a few fruity yeast esters as well. The alcohol character increases with warming. Pretty disappointing.

M: The mouthfeel is fairly crisp and light with appropriate high carbonation.

O: Not a disaster but too much sweet, candylike alcohol which overwhelms the rest of the beer.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful golden/light brown color with three fingers of white head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that covered the entire top of the beer.

Aroma: Typical Belgian Triple-like aromas of yeast, malt, citrus, caramel and spices. I get floral aromas from hops, some sweet aromas from crystalized sugar, some citrus aromas of oranges and grapefruit, plus spices of black pepper, coriander, clove, ginger, finally, malty aromas of buttered bread.

Taste: Malty upfront, followed by some citrusy notes of grapefruit and. There’s some good sweetness from what I’m assuming is crystalized sugar, and some subtle hoppy bitterness too. Finally, there some good spiciness to this beer, not spiciness as in hot, but spiciness as in spices. I get black pepper, coriander, some clove, and a touch of ginger.

Mouthfeel: Medium with some good carbonation to tickle the tastebuds. With an ABV of 9%, there’s a very pronounced, and pleasant alcohol presence on the palate.

Overall: This beer is fantastic!! I love how well balanced it is, between the bready malts, to the floral and citrusy bitterness of the hops, to the beer’s inherent sweetness. It’s excellent!!

A-Pours clear and gleaming gold. Big, pancake head. Very tall and stiff. Good lacing too.

S-Yeast isn't as aggressive as most Tripels. I get a ton of apple juice. Not complex. Pretty straightforward.

T-Apple juice. Pears. Juices. Light yeast and honey. Different than most Tripels I have tried. This one seems cheaply crafted.

M-Booze burps up a bit. Soft carbonation. A bit creamy.

O/D-Not in love with this one. Would not go after this again.

Straffe Hendrik Brugse Tripel 9* ... poured into a glass like any regular beer when I realized this was a bottle-conditioned one, and that I had just poured several ounces of brewer's yeast into the glass with the beer.

Appearance is orange-red and sparkly, or would have been without all the yeast.

The beer is very, very fruity and yeasty, like many Belgian tripels. The flavor profile might have been a little different if I hadn't included most of the bottled yeast in my pour.

I tasted some dates, sour apple, walnut and some malt.

Hoping to try this again with a better pour in the future.

Poured from 11.2oz bottle into St. Bernardus goblet.

A - Hazy with a slightly rusty orange color. The lacey, pale ivory head vanishes quickly.

S - Bitter citrus like orange and grapefruit come to mind. Some definite estery funk.

T - Vaguely sweet, the orange and coriander are on the forefront. A little bit of grapefruit hops. Taste is almost reminiscent of fresh orange juice rather than orange peel. Very bread-like aftertaste.

M - The alcohol is hidden well. Not overly heavy, very clean, like having a piece of fresh fruit.

A very nice tripel, leaning more on the fruit side rather than the spiced. Refreshing and drinkable.

Straffe Hendrik Brugse Tripel pours a model golden-amber colour with a ball of white head as large as a cloud (and dots of lacing as numerous as stars in a night's sky). Neither entirely clear nor entirely cloudy, there must be a fair sized serving of protein in this glass.

A lot of Belgian styles are the beer equivalent of dark piano sonatas or chamber music, but Tripels tend to have the fireworks of a pop concert; fiery yeast spice impresses oregano, pepper, grains of paradise and who's to say what other spices onto a sweet cereal grain base.

The taste makes a warm first impression with soft floral qualities and a tasty, biscuity maltiness. The classic apple/peach/pear orchard fruit combo comes to dominate in no time, although honey-nut cereal and oats keep the taste firmly grounded in grainy maltiness.

This is a Tripel that delivers on all fronts; not only does it have the bulging yeast spice and subtle orchard fruits, but it also drinks like a bowl of delicately sweet, lightly milked oats. It is substantial without getting too goopy (partly the aid of double-digit horsepower bubbles).

Straffe Hendrik Brugse Tripel is a highly under-appreciated offering; it's just as good or better than many brands closely associated with the style (i.e., Chimay, St. Bernardus, Maredsous, etc). If you like Tripels and you're already familiar with the usual names, definitely give this one a try.
