A: Very dark in color, almost black, but when held to the light some brilliant ruby tones come through.. Not a lot of head, very atypical of most Belgian styles.

S: Malty, with a distinct burnt sugar smell, caramel and molasses come through as well as some earthy tones. Some dark fruit in the finish as well as some chocolate notes, although I usually get a little more Belgian yeast character...

T: Now that is interesting, dark malt character, with an almost burnt to the bottom of the pot flavor- but in a good way. There is a lovely fruity sweetness to it, almost like chocolate covered raspberries. There is a very lovely fruitiness to this, that counteracts the burned caramel flavors. This is one of those beers that each time you sip it, you find something new and interesting.

M: Medium to heavy body, carbonation feels light and fine, although the tickle on my tongue seems to lean towards a heavier carbonation than I feel.

O: Overall I'm not really sure.. seems to have a rather unique flavor, but a touch harsh and a bit sweet at the same time. There is definitely less typical Belgian flavors in this guy, but perhaps that's the grain pushing through. While the taste is completely different, it almost reminds me a little of Duchesse, in a yin and yang type of way.

11oz Bottle from Total Wine Tampa FL for $5

Appearance - The beer pours a black/brown colour with a very large frothy beige coloured head. I can't see much carbonation due the darkness of the beer and there is some great lacing on the sides of the glass. The head lasted for over 5 minutes before it began to dissipate.

Smell - Malts, dates/raisins, anise, chocolate

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, dark fruits, and anise. There is also some light chocolate, candied sugar, and a root beer type flavour.

Drink - A little more anise/peppery bite than I like, but still and great mix of complex flavours and a perfect mouthfeel. The alcohol is well hidden and the mix of flavours makes this a great sipper.

Resting upon the success of their lighter fare tripel and blonde, De Halve Maan delivers with a grand cru type recipe to capture the attention of the taste buds and the heartstrings.

Its rich garnet hue is deep and slightly hazed, yet has a masculine brightness about it. Its tawny-sweet scent is decadent with malt flavors ranging from light molasses and brown sugar to hard candy and root beer. Flavors follow suit as the early palate is malty-sweet and particularly lavish.

Tangy wine-like character rise in the middle to balance the sweetness and offer a plethora of vinous complexity. Cabernet acidity links up with peppercorn spice to counter an estery edge comprised of raisin, date, fig and plum.

Its spicy bitterness continues to develop deep in finish as the ale turns decidedly warm, spicy and peppery. Taking on spiced rum proportions with that tangy red wine tartness, the taste concludes with port and effervescence.

Gorgeous dark brown, even perceived as eggplant purple, this was capped by a line of dense bubbly foam.

The nose was a touch boozy, more of a natural ethanol, with prunes, raisins, and malts.

The flavors were more vivid with an upstart of black licorice or anise. The middle palate receives more Dark fruit reminiscent of prunes and raisin. The finish is malty, caramel perhaps, with a bit of twangy spice.

The feel is easy, but I get some tangy spiciness and a touch of alcohol.

Not the best Quad I've ever had but still Damn good!

Pours a brilliant deep brown with a lingering frothy khaki head. Aroma is slightly sweet, with dark candi sugar and subtle plum and date notes. Fairly difficult to get much aroma. Flavor reveals deeply caramelized, toffee-like malt character at the backbone, with prunes and dates adding contrast. The finish is dry and somewhat bitter, with a touch of roast. Not as sweet as I anticipated. The finish is more bitter than expected, as well. Malt character lacks complexity.

750 ml bottle purchased at Liquor Shed in Casper, $11.99

Another powerful pop when I removed the cage and cork. No spillage.

Lots of foam so I'm waiting for that to settle down. Okay, it has a deep brown kind of mahogany colour to it, looks to be clear. The foam is off white bordering on tan. I see nice lacing.

I smell some sweet goodness. Caramel malt that fades into a port like nose that also has some fruity aromas going on. That's not all; I get some notes of chocolate and some cherries. Some alcohol as well but it's pretty well masked.

The taste is less sweet than I would have guessed. A port like flavour greets me at the door followed by toffee, figs, some cherries that add a mere hint of tartness. I also get more than a hint of the abv...lots of warming ensues. I wish more of the Port stood out but this is certainly tasty enough without that happening.

Despite the big pop on opening and the great looking foam I see after every pour, I'd call the carbonation on the near delicate side.

This is a beer and brewery that I've never even heard about, probably saw it on the shelves in FT Collins but never noticed, but I really like this one a lot. It has a comforting feel to it.
