Picked up a 6-pack at my local BevMo for $8.99; poured into a standard pint glass. Old Chub had a deep, dark brown color with ruby edges topped with a modest tan head that left little evidence of its presence along the walls of the glass.
The nose was predominantly caramel and chocolate malts with a hint of peaty smoke. Personally, I'd like a bit more of the peat aroma to be there. Decent undertones of hops help balance out the nose.
The taste was in keeping with what I expect from a scotch ale; lots of caramel and chocolate malts, a touch of coffee bitterness and, in this case, a whisper of peat smoke. The 8.0% alcohol content was very well disguised. The feel was surprisingly full and creamy.
Old Chub is a pretty solid example of the style, hitting the mark with the nice balance of dark malty goodness and a muted hope response. My only complaint is I'd like a bit more smokiness to be present. Still, it's a good brew worth trying.
