12oz can into my Night Shift tulip. Canned 12/05/13.
Pours a robust-looking dark brown with a light mocha one-finger head. Head dissipates quickly but leaves an impressive ring and film atop the beer, as well as plentiful spotty lacing.
Smell is of sweet barley malts, molasses, oatmeal, and a light roasty bitterness. A very light note of smokey wood.
In the mouth, sweet caramel, barley malt, toffee, molasses, and a light note of dark stone fruits. Very subtle woodsmoke as well. Finishes dry and with hints of bittersweet chocolate.
On the fuller end of medium-bodied, low to moderate carbonation. Warming without feeling boozy.
On the whole, a very nice wee heavy. Not my favorite style as a rule, but I can tell a quality example when I taste one.
