Pours creamy tan head over a deep dark brown body with ruby edges. Good head retention. Light aromas of sweet malt, caramel, chocolate and a hint of peat. Malt complexity abounds in the flavor. Caramel and chocolate flavors dominate. A bit of roasted barley to boot. Substantial sweetness, but not cloying. The alcohol is barely perceptible. Just enough bitterness to keep things in check. Full bodied, smooth mouthfeel.
What a surprise from a can. Definitely a higher shilling Scotttish Ale (think Scotch Ale). Inconsequential issues of style aside, this is ale achieves great complexity with a fairly simple palate of caramel, chocolate and a touch of smoked malt. The name rocks too.
