Absolutely pitch black with an 1/8" of persistant dark tan head. Coated the glass with a super thick layer but couldn't hold on to form any lacing. The beer is so thick that the head that formed on the side of the glass took about 2 minutes to reach the surface. It formed this "reverse-Guiness" effect as it rose.

Strong bourbon and alcohol in the nose. Milk chocolate, toffee and a touch of caramel sweetness. When I had the original I thought the nose was weak, again I think so, but there is a strong bourbon aspect to bump it up a bit.

Lots of bourbon again initially. THen dark chocolate and toffee. Alcohol notes after the swallow. Not overly toasted, but lots of malts. I agree with the malt ball candy taste I've heard describe this beer before, but now with bourbon.

Creamy thick, oily and slick on the tongue. Superb really. Flavor sticks but washes away soon after.

This is a definate sipper. Its a high-quality bourbon stout but the strong alcohol notes make this one hard to drink after a while. If I had this one again it'd need to be a cold night and I'd need about two hours to work on it. A great beer though and a must try.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this hand bottle.

The beer pours black with a dark brown head. The aroma is roasted malt and whiskey but I also get something that resembles trash. (It is not necessarily bad, but that is what it reminded me of. It smelled like Mikkeller Black Hole.) The flavor has a slight whiskey oak character with some roasted malt and alcohol. Thick, creamy mouthfeel and low carbonation. Not a bad beer, but I don't like it near as much as regular Ten Fidy.

22oz CBX filled Bomber into a Founders Balloon Tulip.

Pours pitch black with a thin foamy persistent head.

Nose is dark roast, wood, vanilla, and bourbon. Pleasant mesh of flavors here.

Taste is big on roast and wood, the vanilla lingers in the background, and the bourbon sits way in the background. Long woodsy finish. As it warms, the bourbon becomes more integrated into the beer. Wonderful.

Silky smooth, if a little light for the style.

Drinks very well, glad to have been able to save this one for my bday. Kudos to CBX for the effort of bottling it.

Got this at the Brick Store in Atlanta.

Pours completely black with just a few large brown bubbles on top. The bartender moved the glass down as far as possible but still no head. The top of the beer is very oily-looking and there's not a whole lot of lacing here.

Smells mostly of whiskey at first, then as it warms roasted malt and chocolate aromas shine through a bit more.

Tastes very good. The whiskey isn't as pronounced in the taste as it is in the smell. Roasted malt, chocolate, and whiskey all blend together very well. As the beer warms the chocolate flavors take over slightly. Bitterness is solid throughout.

Mouthfeel is good. Very thick with just enough carbonation so that it's not flat-tasting. Smooth.

Drinkability is good. The whiskey aroma draws me in, and the flavors keep me wanting more. Beers like this make me upset we can't fill growlers.

Overall I prefer this just slightly to regular Ten FIDY, but I'll take either of them any day of the week. Give this one a try if you see it around.

Served on tap at the Tasty Weasel, Oskar Blues' new tasting room in Longmont, CO.

Labeled "Oakbarrel Fidy" on the chalkboard, after ordering I inquired more about the beer. The oak barrel is actually a used whiskey barrel from Stranahan in Colorado. Technically, it's not bourbon at all because it wasn't made in Kentucky but that's another website...

It has the same inky black color and thickness as the canned Ten Fidy. The pint glass is filled almost to the top with no head to speak of other than a thin creamy layer that struggles to cover the top of the beer. Even swirling the beer doesn't bring much to the surface.

Aroma is sweet with dark malts and whiskey. Hops are evident but it's the oak that stands out the most.

Taste is also sweet and has a nice whiskey quality to it that isn't at all overwhelming. Sometimes these whishkey barrel beers are over the top but this one is done just right. I actually get more from the oak in the taste of vanilla than I do from the whiskey. There's a slight smokey flavor possibly from the charred barrel. Some roasted coffee and chocolate rounds it out. It's really nicely balanced but also very strong.

Mouthfeel is dominated by thick full bodied richness and a perfect silky texture. There's almost no carbonation which just makes it so damn smooth. I could drink this all night but then I don't know how I'd make it home. Maybe next time I'll bring a growler.

Another great beer from Oskar Blues. Perhaps, instead of bombers, they could can this stuff in tall boys.

Big bourbon aroma and taste blending with IS, enjoyed at Coles Rare beerfest. Lovely, yet felt natural carbonation. Dark colour, very drinkable. Extreme on the whiskey and you must appreciate it to get through it. Worth seeking out. Black gold, a sipper.

Makers Mark barrels

As far as a barrel aged RIS goes, the barrel notes were rather low to me - bourbon is not extremely abundant and only a bit of wood and vanilla sneaks through. I think ten-fidy is just such a massive and sweet beer in the first place, that its hard to penetrate. Still - a tasty stout but not worth the increased pricetag over the basebeer in my opinion

A: Pitch black and oil thick with some nice mocha colored head about a quarter inch thick. there could be a bit better lacing but thats just splitting hairs

S: Heavy raisin and plum note to start with hints of vanilla and chocolate. the barrel is not to overtly present but there is some sweetness present

T: This one tended much more to the sweet side, but the whiskey notes came out more in the taste than nose as it was a bit more rye/warming dr. pepper like flavor. Heavy in the dark fruit department too, which was different from the last time i had this beer. Also, its a bit roastier in taste too. This one definitely got better as it warmed

M: Rich and creamy with nothing to harsh about it. there is a bit of heat and some syrupiness

D: This is a bit ass beer that should be enjoyed slowly because even just a few sips gave me a litle buzz. Better as it warmed and overall a solid BA stout. THe barrel wasnt as prounouced this time as it was the first time i had had it but its still a great beer that i would never turn down

On tap at Tryst. Served in a snifter. Aged 7 months in Four Roses Bourbon barrels.

Appearance - Inky black. Small khaki head. Settles to nothing. A few stray bubbles.

Smell - Lots of bourbon. Tons of vanilla and oak. The barrel character is excellent. Chocolate roasted malts come through, but it's mostly barrel.

Taste - More balanced with the barrel, mostly because it's quite sweet. Chocolate malts are most prominent. Bourbon is still strong. Liquor flavor comes through strongly. Vanilla and oak.

Mouthfeel - Booze! Lots of liquor heat and beer heat. Sweet with low carbonation. Yet I don't seem to mind.

Overall - This is hella good. Great barrel on top of a great beer.

Served from tap into a goblet. Poured pitch black with a minimal tan head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, whiskey, oak, and molasses. The flavor was of sweet malt, molasses, whiskey, and wood. It had a medium feel on the palate with low carbonation. Overall this was a pretty nice brew. Had some pretty mellow flavors going on here, but became more robust as the brew warmed up. Also had a pretty nice aroma going on as well. I am really glad I got to try this one and I really enjoyed it thoroughly.

Pitch black, thin layer of dark tan head.

Aroma is heavy roast, malt, anise, oak and dark chocolate. Not a ton of barrel presence.

Taste is big. Roast malt, vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate. The anise/coffee harshness of the standard is put in check by the vanilla and oak. The oak whisky tones keep it from being cloying. Finishes with some barrel, vanilla and cocoa.

Slick full body and it is smooth. Drinkability is about as good as you could expect. A winner for sure, the barrel aging compliments and accents only. A nice refined version of the already standout standard 10-fidy.

A: pours black with almost no head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S: roasted malts with sweet chocolate, molasses, caramel, oak, and bourbon. There are some toffee and booze notes toward the finish.

T: roasted malts here as well with semi-sweet chocolate, molasses, caramel, oak, and sweet bourbon. The finish is sticky and boozy.

M: thick body with low carbonation, this beer is thick and sticky rather than creamy.

O: a good bbal stout overall, though not as complex and balanced as I prefer my bbal stouts.

On tap at Capone's on 3-10-09 during Philly Beer Week. This review is from notes taken that night.

APPEARANCE: Served in a small snifter, the beer was black in color with a small, mocha-colored collar.

SMELL: The aroma is big on chocolate with a coffee-like roastiness in the back along with a little alcohol heat. The whiskey is there for sure, but it's subdued just enough to play nice with everything else. There are no signs of any esters or dark fruit type flavors at all in this.

TASTE: The malt contributes mostly chocolate and dark caramels with a subtle but formidable coffee roastiness. The wood-aging is quite apparent in the form of rich vanilla, especially on the finish. It's all tied together by a whiskey kick that carries through the entire taste. An alcohol heat is there for sure, but it adds another dimension to the beer rather than detracting from it.

MOUTHFEEL: Full bodied and all but completely chewy without any bit of syrupy slickness. Carbonation is on the lower end of the spectrum.

DRINKABILITY: I'll quote my notes directly here. "AWESOME. I HAD 2."

This beer was the real deal. If you ever see it come up on tap anywhere, GO!

A huge beer that I felt truly lucky to be able to get ahold of. A nice 32oz growler sent down to me to enjoy. This one was poured into a pint glass and consumed on 06/26/2009.

Nice pour here. Dark, black as night with only a tiny amount of tan head peaking up from the depths on this one. The aroma was heavenly. Rich vanilla notes just percolating up, rounding out a beautiful whiskey smell. Some light chocolate and a tiny pinch of coffee in there, but this one is dominated by the barrel influence. As I take the first sip it is much more of the same. Rich whiskey notes just roll across the tongue with precision, rich notes of vanilla, a touch of woody undertone and a sparkling coffee induced finish just round this together wonderfully. Could have used a bit more carbonation, but still very nicely done with a big full feel and a long drawn out finish.

Overall this was very solid indeed. I really think it influenced and change the character of the ten fidy wonderfully, making an almost complete transformation. I would have this one again any day.

One of the many exceptional and rare brews that appeared at the Blue Palms First Anniversary Party.

Poured a very dark brown to black with next to no head. The aroma consisted of brown sugar, toasted marshmallows, and a smooth whiskey with plenty of oak and vanilla.

The taste hits with a lot of the same elements as the nose alone with abundant dark fruit, especially raisins, before having a mild whiskey finish. Compared to the canned version of the beer, a lot of the roast character has dropped off and been replaced with sweet malts, dark fruit, and oak, but at the same time the whiskey quality is relatively mild. The beer has really matured instead of just picking up spirit flavors.

Whereas I find the standard Ten Fidy to be impressively chewy and motor oily, this beer has a slick full body but is just not as heavy on the palate anymore. Carbonation is medium-low.

This is a very tasty brew I sadly will probably not get another chance to sample. Before tasting it I imagined this kicking up the monstrously thick Ten Fidy to a whiskey barrel extreme, but I actually found it seemed to mellow out and add a number of subtle nuances instead. A nice surprise.

10th taster at Port's Barrel Blast
Per Barrel Blast description - aged in Stranahan's Whiskey Barrels from Colorado

A - Dark Black with a dark mocha head lining - held up to light it was pitch black and viscous

S - Strong vanilla, some oak, definitely had the alcohol taste - didn't pinpoint it as whiskey versus bourbon but it was lighter in the alcohol profile imparted by the barrel - no smokiness as per the original Ten FIDY

T - Light whiskey/bourbon reminiscent alcohol, tons of chocolaty flavors with an earthiness and a vanilla finish. The smokiness from regular Ten FIDY is very light if anything mixed into an earthy flavor right before the vanilla finishes off the taste.

M - No discernible heat though they are listing this at 10% and not 10.50% so maybe the barrel and aging calmed a little of the ABV down. This was very smooth drinking with a nice vanilla finish imparted from the barrels - without the heaviness.

D - I really liked this offering as I'm a little partial to regular Ten FIDY being so smokey. This toned that down and brought up the chocolate note and definitely left a nice earthy and vanilla finish to it. It's rich, but I could see myself sitting down with this and being satisfied. This one was one of my favorites at this event and I'd be jumping aboard the hype train if they ever were to put this into cans - phenomenal. I thought it was a must taste and was glad to have nabbed this one.

I had this on-tap at Victoria Gastro Pub. Poured into a 5oz. sample glass.

Appearance: Pours jet black with no light coming through at all. There is a layer of dark tan head the leaves a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Sweet and roasty. I'm picking up hints of dark fruit and some bourbon as well.

Taste: Sweet and bitter roast along with some bourbon heat hit the tongue first. There is a hint of vanilla and oak, but not a lot. This beer has a very smooth flavor.

Mouthfeel: Perfection. Thicker than I would have expected given the abv, but smooth like silk. Mild carbonation and a dry finish. The mouthfeel really makes this beer special.

Overall: I really like this beer a lot. The mouthfeel is one of the best I've ever had. Quite smooth and I would love to have it again. The amount of burn from the bourbon is very nice.

On tap at Capone's...
Appears a dark midnight with a small, dark tan head that slowly fades into a mild cap and collar. Spotty bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of vanilla, milk chocolate, bittersweet cocoa, raisins, roasted malt, & caramel...damn.
Taste is boozy up front with a cafe con leche sweetness found in the flavors. This stuff is pretty intense with a likeness to a Cadbury Fruit & Nut bar that makes me enjoy this even more.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, syrupy, bordering on a Zinfandel-grape Port that is meant for sipping. It's really boozy but there is still a hoppy syrup that pours through along the hard-pretzel like grain that zips along the palate. Great stuff.

A-Typical TenFidy appearance, jet black and thick. No real head or lacing

S-Wild Turkey, hot cheap bourbon with some chocolate and coffee

T-Pretty hot, lots of bourbon with a little chocolate and malted milk balls. Mostly booze

M-Creamy and viscous

O- I love the base beer but think the choice of barrels may not have been the best. Wild Turkey just dominated the beer.

Dark black body with a cocoa head

Fudgy whisky, carmelized prunes, rasins, and milk chocolate in the nose. Very interesting that the regular Ten Fidy doesn't have that dark fruit character.

The mouthfeel is noticeably thinner. Tangy bourbon and fudgy dark chocolate combine to make a smooth drinking BA imperial stout. The dark fruit shows in the taste as dark cherry puree and prunes. It enhances the sweetness a little bit.

I found this on tap at Capone's during Philly Beer Week.

This one came a dark black with slight hints of raisin sneaking in through the edges in the little 9 oz. snifter. There was no head at all to speak of.

Smells of huge dark dried fruits, tobacco and a clean and organic gooey barley. The dry ease of the bourbon that nestled into all aspects of this was fantastic! The balance is legendary.

The flavor in a word? Balance. Wow. There's a nice sticky barley up front with a little smokey charred flavor that's seamlessly blended into a dark coffee that is very subtle. Wow. There's a distant cocoa here too that reminds me of a superbly made espresso. Oh, and it's all masterfully engulfed by a perfect balance of bourbon. Amazing!

The mouth feel is spot-on for the style. It's heavy and smooth, really delivering its subtleties, with just a gentle brush of carbonation to keep it alive. I'll call it magic, but it's also surprisingly clean. Perfect.

This is an accomplishment that other brewers need to take note of.

From bottle to tasting glass 1/28/11 at SC Pre-Party

A: Like someone turned the lights out. Just pure darkness. Mild head on an easy pour. Light to no lacing as it warmed.

S: Close your eyes and you'd think you're in Kentucky. Pure wood, and a really enticing dark charry wood at that. When I dig a little deeper, I get some intense hints of alcohol and freshly brewed dark roast.

T: Just an explosion of flavor: boozy bourbon and alcohol mix eloquently with the tannin from the smoky wood. The malt creeps up and hangs around as the esters escape from my mouth.

M: Oddly, this does not have the same viscous presentation as the standard, canned Ten Fidy. Don't misunderstand though, as this brew is still one heavy bastard. It is rich and silky and everything you'd expect and desire out of an AD/IS. It simply seems that the whiskey barrel has somewhat altered the weight of this beer.

O: This is one of those Keyser Soze type of brews: never seen, oft-rumored, and when it pops up -POOF- like that, it's gone.

I feel lucky to have enjoyed such a rarity, and if I ever see it around again, I will scratch, claw and kill to get another taste. An outstanding beer.

Beautiful thick black pour with huge mocha head like regular ten fidy.

Amazing bourbon aroma with hints of coffee and rich dark chocolate.

Incredibly smooth thick mouthfeel with just a touch of bitter chocolate to contrast the deep sweet bourbon molasses flavor. Then, an incredible bitter coffer finish that lingers on the tongue. At 4.8, this is currently my highest rated beer.
