Mama’s Little Yella Pils pours to a yellow/straw color with a slightly hazy body. The nose on this beer is faint but features the scent of grains, sweet malts, bread, and light noble hops. There isn’t much foam to speak of, but it does maintain a thin layer as you drink.

This beer has a good overall flavor and it includes tastes of bread, toast, light grains, and noble hops. The grains are most noiticeable and they are joined by the taste of light fruit and modest hops in the finish. There is a bitter moment, but it doesn’t last for long and is replaced by the aftertaste of sweet malts. Light to medium in body, this beer leaves a zesty, tingly sensation on the palate, and is quite refreshing.

Mama’s Little Yella Pils is a tasty, refreshing beer product that features a lighter, softer body and taste compared to other Oskar Blues products but certainly has more taste than offered by the typical American pilsner. It is brewed free from adjuncts and other distractions and it asserts itself much better as a solid representation of the pilsner style. It is a refreshing beer that seems just right for a hot summer day.

As a love of porters, pale ales, and stouts, I don’t consume much pilsner beer, but when I do, I insist that the product be one free from adjuncts and other undesireable ingredients so common in the beer products of the large breweries. If your standards are similar, Mama’s Little Yella Pils is a very good option. It offers a taste that is craft- beer oriented while not going to extremes in any direction.

Poured from Can into half pint tulip

A - pours a yellow colour with a medium white head with excellent retention

S - floral hops, pilsner malt, hints of fresh grass and some bread

T - starts with an initial floral/pine hop hit followed by sweet malts and more floral notes. Excellent.

M - very smooth, crisp and refreshing. Finishes medium dry
