On-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a hazy dark copper color with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of sticky caramel malts with equal amounts of earthy and pine hop aromas. As it warms slight amounts of dark toffee aromas waft out.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth caramel malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by moderate amounts of pine hops. Midway through the sip the pine fades a bit however the bitterness remains with the addition of leafy and earthy hops. The hops carry through to a solidly bitter ending. The alcohol is hidden very well.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall I thought the mouthfeel was the best part about this beer as the malt and hop profiles were not very complex. That being said there weren't any faults either. It's nice to see OB step out from their core beers and experiment though. A nice beer that's worth a shot.

a: Murky redish/drown color with minimal head.

s: Hops and Alcohol. Very rustic and earthy smelling with some fruits and alcohol.

t: Alcohol, earthy rustic hops dark fruits, tons of caramel malt.

m: very low carbonation medium body

d: Dont know if I would have this beer again, needs some age on it for sure before it's would get better I think. The alcohol really comes out in this beer which makes it extra hard to drink for me.

Had this on tap at Toronado for Barleywine Fest 2010.

Pours clear dark reddish-brown with a small off-white head and very good lacing.

Aroma is really fruity with pomegranate and starfruit notes, along with caramel malt.

Flavor is malty and mildly sweet. Caramel, light fruits (especially pomegranate), citrus, and malted milk balls. Complex and interesting.

Medium-full body with low carbonation and some booziness.

Drinkability is very good. Very solid overall, on the higher end of beers I had there. I'm sure this will be way overrated if it ends up in cans, since certain people seem to think canned beers can do no wrong. For now though, I say it's pretty good stuff. Not too surprised it got a honorable mention at the fest.

Served from tap into a goblet. Poured a murky red-brown with a one finger off-white head. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, bitter hops, and sugar. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, slight hop, massive alcohol, and sugar. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall my first impression was: HOLY SHIT ALCOHOL! Not only overwhelmed my palate, but overwhelmed my face. Besides this side effect it had a pretty nice flavor. Luckily the alcohol became less intense as the brew warmed up some. One glass was enough for me... But would suggest this to any Barleywine fan or the tickers out there. Tick tick tick!

22oz counter-pressure filled bottle from CBX

Pours a dark mahogany with a soapy ivory head that settles to a slight haze and craggy ring. Quite pretty looking. Sweet, malty aromas of caramel, toffee, raisin, fig, and a good amount of booze. Reminds me quite a bit of North Coast Old Stock. Taste is close to the nose, very malty with lots of caramel, fig, raisin, and a TON of booze. Not harsh boozy, but a lot of warming in the chest. Mouthfeel is big and sticky, with a full body and lowish carbonation. Overall a big, boozy monster of a Barleywine, I'd love to try the Barrel-Aged version!

Holy crap this was a big beer, bigger then most anything i have had in recent memory for sure. served from a 1 liter growler into a pint glass and consume on 1.16.11

really nice pour here with a dark hazelnut color that melts away with reddish hues. really nice head of about three inches settles down quickly and cleanly, leaving only a nice cushion on top. arma is deep alcohol, lots of hops, caramel, tons of malts but the alcohol is huge, an i actually really this about it. very nicely done i have to admit. smooth and even flavor is again very hot and this takes away a bit from the drinkable factor but i really still think it comes across very, very well. rich hops and dark malts give way to a slight fruitiness as it warms and a long and seemingly neverending finish.

overall i think this was an excellent beer, very well done and worth every drop, but not too be take lightly by any means.

Pours a brown color with a very slight head. No retention or lacing. Nose brings some caramel, dark fruits, light citrus, a WHOLE lot of alcohol. This is really, really boozy. The taste brings straight alcohol and a bit of miscellaneous fruits. The booze is really hard to get over, and is hard to forgive as it's not a really tasty beer to begin with. Does not drink well.

Wow! I'm totally impressed.

A dark, hazy brown pour into a goblet at Tipsy Cow, Madison. Rusty-brown fluid, with an off-white head that plasters the most perma-lacing on the glass I've ever seen on any beer.

The aroma is booze-laden fig and fruit cake. There's an earthiness that comes from burnt butter and waterlogged wood.

I'm amazed at this. The flavor in the mouth far outstrips what's hinted at in the aroma. Way sweeter on the front of the tongue than was to be expected from the nose, however, in the best way possible. Toffee and raisin, the molasses of dark rum, nice wood, a bit of astringent tannin, then a clarifying booze punch. Exceedingly well-balanced, on the back end you get hop oil and resin bitterness to do battle with the front-end sweetness.

Carbonation is perfectly reserved. Full-bodied creaminess delights in the mouthfeel.

It's useful to note I'm not a fan of Oskar Blues, in general. Their brews are overly bittered for my taste, without even the basic balance I look for in bitter beers. I feel incredibly lucky to get this one during Mad Craft Beer Week. I don't ever expect to see this on store shelves or in local bars outside of an event like this.

Double Bagger on tap at The Pony Bar, Hell's Kitchen, NYC, part of an Oskar Blues event there.

Appearance: Five-ounce pour (what!?) on a pretty little glass. Barely a rim of white foamy head around the glass, some bubbles. Dark rusty appearance. Sun-kissed auburn.

Smell: Classic barleywine- raisin, dark fruit, caramel, butterscotch. Pedro Ximenez, old-grape sherry.

Taste: Boozy hot! Whiskey, wood, a Southern Comfort sort of sweetness. Tad of yeast and a dry, hoppy finish. Raisin and sugar dominate, along with booze. Some biscuit/dessert.

Mouthfeel: Full flavor, body and carbonation. Dry, bitter and woodsy finish. Super boozy but delicious. A pull-no-punches beer!

Overall: Super hot, sweet, sharp, classic barleywine. Sure, not exactly chuggable, but oh-so-enjoyable and true to style. I'm a fan!

Pours a medium bodied dark brown color with a scant amount of tan colored head. Nice aromas of caramel, light brown sugar and maybe a little dark fruit. Pretty hot on the palate, as would be expected for a beer of this strength, with more brown sugar and caramel and just a kiss of hops on the finish. This is one I had been wanting to try, and I wasn't disappointed.

A: pours slightly cloudy and brown. Thin tan head that falls to a halo.
S: very malty, peppery barley, lightly burnt caramel, and a little bit of alcohol heat.
T: again peppery burnt caramel malt, a little bit of pine hop bitterness. Surprisingly not as hot as I was thinking for 13.2%
M: thick and coating but doesn't seem to linger around as long as one might think.
O: just a sample seems hot, but a glass is tame and very nice. Oskar Blues please can this! It will be easier to age it.

Sadly I thought it was named ODB for Ol Dirty Bastard which would've been a bit cooler.

Appearance - a rim of bubbles around the glass, dark pecan color

Smell - caramel, hot, raisin (comes out stronger in this than the barrel aged)

Taste - caramel, hot (not sure which is hotter, this or the barrel aged), molasses, woody

Mouthfeel - hot and sweet, hope you like it

again more of a english barley than american, not a thing bitter in it.

a - Pours an amber color with 1 inch of off white head.

s - Smells of caramel malts, dark fruits, sweet fruit, and a tiny bit of citrus/soap?

t - Tastes of dark fruit, caramel malts, fruity malts, and alcohol.

m - Medium body and low carbonation.

d - A decent barleywine. I enjoyed the smell and the taste was pretty good too, with a little too much heat. Would give another shot.

Pours a dark amber with a thin beige head. Light lacing as well. Nose has dark candy malts, ripe fruits, herbal hops and peppery alcohol. Taste has a huge malt profile that is well balanced by bitter hops. Medium to full body drinks well. Nice barleywine.

Why would you make a barleywine? You already have Gordon. Oh well, here we go. Served on draft at a local beer bar.

Beer is brown and hazy with nearly no head, very little lacing and almost no carbonation. Looks OK I guess.

Aroma is kind of strong...do I detect some alcohol in there, Yep! Quite hot in the aroma...kind of dreading getting a 12 ounce pour of this now. Some malt, no bitterness or hop notes detected.

It tastes like burning. This is really hot, and dry, not helping. OK, focus, this beer is sweet and malty up front, minimal bitterness at the back, finishes really dry, medium body, the alcohol is cutting the body back. No carbonation character in the mouth, very much like liquor...a lot like liquor. Very very hot hot hot.

Poured up at the 2010 Toronado Barleywine Festival with clear deep copper body with tan head. The aroma emits musty dark fruitiness but yet kind of bright with dates, figs, plums and cherries, it's just all bold and nearly brash dark fruity esters. The taste does bring up a brief pulse of caramel and malt sweetness before assertive notes of plum, date, fig and prune like dark fruitiness. It does seem to dry out a tad into the finish. Nice.

Lemme get that ODB! On tap at the falling rock for their barleywine month and listed as ODB. Dark caramel color and it smelled fantastic. Lots of toffee, hops, reminded me of Bigfoot a little, very rich. If this was 13% Abv i didn't notice it even though I knew it was burly.

S: Loads of faded hops, fruits..apricot and others with booze

T: Big faded hops powered by fruitiness and booze. A once upon a time caramel backbone

Right upfront: this an average BW, it'll be a good introduction to the style for someone who's not familiar with the style, but not special for the the rest of us.

Served in a nice stemmed goblet. Poured a cloudy, just opaque, dark brown, with just a thin cap of thin off-white head that had low retention and light lacing.

The aroma was a muted sweet malt scent, but not as sweet as most of the style. The taste was fairly typical, just not overly-well developed or defined. Malty, sweet, some alcohol, and a trace of hops.

The body was typical, not as full or as smooth as most. Drinkability was pretty good, mostly due to the beers averageness, but not worth going out of your way for.

Overall, the beer was OK, but nothing worth seeking out.

This is a 2010 bottle (from a tap)

A - pours an amber mahogany with a small ivory head, little retention and lacing.

S - big boozy figs raisins prunes and wood chips. Dark fruits smell amazing

T - Exactky as it smells with ample dark fruits, mild bitterness. Not much else though, slightly maple syrupy sweet

m - medium with decent carb

O - good huge flavor of dark fruits and sweetness, quite drinkable for the abv

Draught, City Beer Store. This beer poured hazy dark brownish gold color with little head. The beer is quite malty. The most prominent notes are caramel malt, brown sugar and molasses. There's a relatively light citric hop aroma and a very mild bitterness to the flavor. The flavor is quite sweet. A bit much for me. I had a small glass and that was enough. Mouthfeel is relatively thick but not too sticky. The beer really doesn't hide the booze well. I like big beers, but this one needs some tuning.

On tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester NY

Poured a clear dark brown with minimal tan head. No lacing left behind. Smelled of dark pit fruits, caramel, alcohol; sweet and floral as well. Tastes much like it smells, boozy, sweet, caramel, also quite a solid, slightly piney hop character and very thick coating mouth feel. It reminds me of Flying Dog's Horn Dog, but on steroids. Surprisingly drinkable for such a behemoth of a barleywine, could have had 2 if I had the money to spare ($8.50 for 8.5 oz glass). I'm in love.
