From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #66 (July 2012):

LOOK: Weathered copper; clean, sizeable head

SMELL: Bready, caramel, cotton candy, medicinal, ripe plums, peppercorn, herbal, yeast, grassy

TASTE: Creamy, malty, peppery, bread crust, nutty, hay, ripe fruit, smooth, taffy, faintly phenolic, broth, chicory, alcohol; dry, long-lingering finish

Collaborations: Everyone is doing them these days. This one has no problem standing out, as the packaging is unique—a resealable pint can from Ball Corp. Oskar Blues Brewery & Sun King Brewing Co. came together and punched out a solid Belgo-American ale.

16oz can served cold at liquids and solids in Longmont.

Poured into a tulip, Chaka is a deep amber color with a slight haze. The head is thin but leaves nice lace behind.

Aroma is fruity, floral, and mildly funky.

Flavor is sweet and fruity up front but leads into a citrusy, floral hop bitterness. It finishes dry leading me into the next sip.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated.

Overall a very nice version of the style. I hope they make this a regular because it certainly would be in my fridge.

A thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a rich copper color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of fruits, some mild spices. Taste is fruits, alcohol, some yeast, a bit of spice, pretty tasty. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

Pours a dark, muddied mahogany colour, with a yellowish coloured head. Left foamy lace. Smells somewhat musky, with a earthy, yeasty ester, dark fruits, with some spicy notes. On the taste, you get that spicy Belgian yeast notes, some mildly funky, musky notes, almost a grape skin, with some figs and dates-like fruity sweetness. The feel is kinda thick and somewhat syrupy for the style, but not bad feeling.

I'd call this more along the lines of a BSDA with a colour and the somewhat sweeter nature, but, what the hey. It's still a quite enjoyable Belgian-style ale.

Had at Bar of Soap Asheville. Poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours a dark amber, almost light brown, color with a 1/2 inch light tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Thick, semi-resilient lacing leaves a solid ring behind.

S- Lots of sweetness from the yeast, malt and rich Belgian candi sugar. Dark fruit notes plus some banana and spice.

T- Flavor is a lot of the same with a bunch of candi sugar providing a big sweetness. The alcohol is well-hidden but what you get in return is a nearly cloying sweetness. Notes of banana bread, spice and toffee.

M- Slightly thick and a bit sticky. Medium-low carbonation and a medium body.

O- Though I do like the fact that it's so strong yet easy to drink, it's a bit one-dimensional with the heavy handed sweetness and typical Belgian yeast character. Also I feel like the 16 oz serving is a bit much for a beer of this ABV.

My thanks to DenverBeerDrinker for sending me one of these in furtherance of The CANQuest (TM)!

From the CAN: A CANlaboration by: Oskar Blues Brwery [&] Sun King Brewery"; "Pack it in, pack it out"; "Made possible by: Ball, cask.com, Silgan White Cap".

No Crack and an overzealous Glug that got some on my keyboard! This created two fingers of dense, light-brown head with decent retention. Color was a cloudy brown, like turgid river water (SRM = > 27, < 34). Nose had a honey-sweetness along with a yeasty mustiness. Mouthfeel was big, full and thick with a bit of alcohol heat, yeasty spiciness and a taste of dried, dark fruits. Think raisins, prunes, dates and figs. This was more like drinking a Dubbel than a BPA! Heavy lacing began to form in the glass. Finish had it all - fruits, spice and heat to the point that I felt like I was drinking a liquid fruitcake at Christmastime. Phew! This would NOT be a beer for the beach in the summer.
