A friend in Boulder shipped this east for me. Heck of a guy. This isn't far from a Black IPA or hoppy porter. There's a lot of smooth chocolate and big biting citrus hops. The body is big and satisfying, but not too heavy or sweet. The aroma has a mix of roasted barley with more piney hops. There are some juicier notes in the flavor, but the beer finishes dry with spice and rind. Find yourself some.

I'm often unsure how to rate these hybrids: "hopped up brown ale". On one side, it's an interesting tasting (and smelling) beer, but doesn't really fit what I consider a brown ale. I indicated what I rated it for style in parens compared to another style.

A: slightly darker than I think of for a brown ale, but not quite out of line. Thick foamy head and significant lacing
S (-.5): overwhelmingly orange in nature to me initially. I get a little mango later, but regardless a wonderful fruity smell... for an IPA. Probably a 4+ for a different style.
T: when cold, the orange was strong here as well, but it did have a roasted part that combined to remind me of the chocolate oranges that come out around the holidays. As the beer came to temp, it fell closer in line with a brown ale. Bitter chocolate and some light dark nuttiness shone through the fruity hops.
M (-.25): the bitterness was a little much for a brown (lemongrass and close to resinous dryness) but again there was a difference between drinking cold and closer to proper temp.
O (-.25): not too bad a beer. I could definitely have another and wait a couple minutes to enjoy it, but it does seem more pale ale in many respects (but not color).

Poured a brown body with one finger head on top of a mixed aroma of roasted malts and some bitter chocolate. Medium bodied, little bit chewey, even sticky, the roasted malt bitterness is balanced with some dark chocolate and touches of caramel. Good ale but the finish is a little too dry and bitter for my liking as some hoppy bitterness comes into palge.

Aluminum can into a snifter.

Pours a dark brown color with an inch thick light beige head. The smell is hoppy...not really much else. Taste is very different. Much more like a stout/big brown ale than an IPA. Its like a very hoppy brown...just as the name suggests! Very impressive. terrific chocolately..hoppy..malty flavor. Medium bodied with mild carbonation.

Overall extremely impressed by this one. Thanks JD!
