16oz. can -- dated 10/31/12 "instead of candy," it says -- served into a nonic pint glass
Pours a lighter color than I expected. The can says "Imperial Red IPA," but this is a autumn leaf/copper color that plenty of double IPAs are. 1.5 fingers of dense, small-bubbled foam the color of buttermilk.
Oooh, this is pretty nice smelling. There is a warm juiciness here, like cooked pineapple. Grapefruit juice as well, but it too smells like its at room temperature. There's a spiced pear character here that reminds me of a candle. The malts don't come across as caramel so much as bready and spicy.
The flavor isn't nearly as juicy. Lots of dry breadcrust notes backed up by spicy, greener hops. The pear and grapefruit character is there, but as an accent mark. It's not complex; what you taste initially is what lingers through the whole drink.
The mouthfeel is medium-thin for the style, and pretty slick. I think a bit more perceptible carbonation would help to break up the malt. Overall this is pretty nice for a big hoppy red. Nothing amazing, but very solid.

A: poured from a 16 oz can into a pint glass, red brown colored with a large foamy offwhite head that lingers leaving good lacing, clear
S: heavy on hops, earth, pine, citrus , grapefruit, breast malt sweetness, tangy and mouth watering
T: pine bitterness up front, bitter at first with a lemon quality, sweetens to honey and slight raisin flavors, hint of heavy alcohols and esters
M: medium to full with good carbonation, slight alcohol presence
O: nice balance of bitter mixed with quite sweet maltiness
