A very good looking brew. Clear, bright copper colour with its red highlighted amber body. A vigorous pour produced a big, tight three finger head with decent retention which is already leaving intricate and webby lacings.
Ruby red grapefruit and a touch of pine greet the nose along with some caramel, some toasty and nutty malts, as well as doughier, bready pale malts. A touch of yeast mustiness also present.
A nice brew. Whether this is an imperial red or an IIPA could be debated ad nauseum, so i will just review it based on my impressions versus styles. Caramel along with the toasted flavours from the malts, along with the breadier pale malts make up a solid malt backbone with some depth to it. The hops manage to assert themselves to a slightly resinous and mildly stripping level with a good dose of ruby red grapefruit and touches of piney bitterness.
Medium body, mildly carbonated and somewhat creamy, despite its mild, toasty and astringent finish. Slightly hop forward, not the hoppiest IIPA, nor the least hoppy, but definitely delivers a good dose of quality hop flavour and bitterness.
Pretty damn drinkable for its 8.7% ABV, only reveals itself with the slightest amount of alcohol warmth, just the way i like it. A great stepping stone to bigger, hoppier brews, and a tasty one with enough depth to be well worth coming back to from time to time. Obviously a bit too boozy for session fare, but it would be nice to knock pack a four pack or more on occasion. I have yet to be disappointed by Oskar Blues, and look forward to drinking this one again, as well as finally getting my paws on some Ten Fidy!
