A 355ml can with a canned-on date of August 10th 2012. Received in a trade with mmapes - thanks! The label describes it as an Imperial Red ale.
Poured into a Delirium chalice. A deep marmalade-amber hue with faint haze and good carbonation. Yields a small head of creamy off-white foam that settles rapidly to a patchy surface layer. A piercing aroma of fruity, spicy hops with notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lime, citrus and pine resin. This is underpinned by a backbone of sweet, grainy malt with hints of caramel and dry yeast. A background whiff of booze completes an incredible sensory experience.
Tastes of spicy aromatic hops with a malty character and a powerful bitter finish. Notes of grapefruit, bitter orange essence, pine resin, lime, citrus, caramel, faint grain and subtle hints of yeast. Slightly sweet. Possesses a spicy and slightly oily quality, followed by an intense bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, spicy and tingly - the hop oils stimulate the palate. Lovely body; substantial but not over-the-top. Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hop notes and sweet malt.
Wow - what a beer! The spicy, fruity hop notes envelop the tongue in a blanket of tingly deliciousness. The malt character is solid but plays second fiddle to the hops. Considering it's strength the alcohol is well hidden. A hoppy smorgasbord of flavour; I love it. This is the sort of IPA you can't find too easily in the UK - well worth sampling if you have the chance. Buenos G'Noches!
