Aged 1 year in Brinley Rum barrels.

Shipwreck Porter
Barrel Aged Porter
ABV: 10% | IBU: 26 | SRM: 42

When our friends and neighbors at Brinley shipped us ten of the barrels used to make their Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum from their distillery on St. Kitts, we were given the opportunity to create a beer that would take advantage of wood rather than the other way around. We looked to coax complexity out of the marriage of a barrel's soul and a brew's potential, not just to bomb a huge beer with huge flavor. The rum that lives in these barrels for four years integrates its spice to the wood so well that it ends up reminiscent of a Bananas Foster. A sturdy brown honey porter seemed the best host to receive the ghosts from Shipwreck's old home. We started with a base of deep malts looking for notes of coffee and chocolate, then enhanced them with the floral bouquet of local wildflower honey and the preservative strength of 10% ABV while keeping the body sensible. This was put in the casks to meld with the vanilla, wood, and spice notes, toned down by the oxidative effect of a year in the cellar. Drink Shipwreck Porter because a barrel should be so much more than a depth charge.

A: Black in color with no transparency, barely no head at the top with no lacing to go along with it.

S: Almost all rum on the nose with slight hint of brown sugar and caramel, very dark rum all over the place, felt like I was smelling captain morgan.

T: Lots of rum on the tongue as well with a strong backbone of sugar, dark roasted malts somewhere in there as well. Not a bad flavor but lots of booze all over.

M: Sticky, lots of carbonation and a medium bodied mouthfeel.

O: Overall not a bad beer from a local brewery but lots going on here and lots of rum flavor on this brew, definitely a Ship wrecker.

Orange wax growler. Poured into a FFF/DMC snifter 6/21/2014.

A- Well, this one was a gusher when Roger opened this one up. All the foam in the world rose out of the bottle and coated the ground. But well. This is a dark brown bodied beer with a two finger dark mocha head with fine retention. Bits and bits of lacing.

S- Roast malt, milk chocolate, spices and sweet rum. Smells well-bought together in terms of its components.

F- More sweet rum barrel on the palate that seems to get on the verge of being overshadowing, but there is still a nice roast malt character with milk chocolate and cold pressed coffee, a little bit of what seems to be nutmeg or cinnamon to round things out.

M- Medium in body, silky and smooth. Fairly boozy.

O- Enjoyed this one despite the fact that this was a gusher. There didn't seem to be any off-flavours or signs of infection, so perhaps it was a very vigorous growler fill?
