Are there any aromatics more corruptly appealing than that suspect waft of dirt and sex that is the heart of fresh white truffles? Not the fake pretty perfumes ubiquitous these days, but the approach/avoidance primitive reaction to that heady scent of something that was secretly thriving just below fecund soil on early morning moments in late fall. Gilded Lily looks to take the beauty of a classic Belgian tripel a step further by stitching a little bit of white truffle’s leather to the edges of the beer’s luxurious drape--the pull of a touch of kink peeking from a lovely silk robe. Drink Gilded Lily because a little hint of dirty makes it all the more alluring.

Pours a frosted gilded-straw color with a finger of white foam. Head retention is okay. Aroma is caramely, nutty, earthy, bready malts, vanilla bean, wildflower honey, truffles, herbal and spicy hops and a kiss of heat. Big aroma that blooms with each whiff. Flavor profile is caramely, bready, nutty malts with herbal and spicy hops. Wildflower honey and truffles add additional layers of sweetness, with a little heat at the back to round it out. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a near-still effervescence that carries just a touch of silty grain. Overall, dynamic layering of Belgian tripel with honey and truffles.

Served in a 15.5oz Spiegalau tulip from a 12oz can.

Carton Brewing Co. 'Gilded lily"
12 fl. oz. can, CANNED ON 12/12/18 15:27:28"
$6.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So I have to say that this seems a little weird but I'm willing to try it; it's a Belgian-style Tripel done with honey and white truffles. How is that even possible as honey is expensive to begin with, and truffles are REALLY expensive? It's poured a hazy golden body beneath a short head of white foam. The head has already dropped a bit, and I know my glass is "beer clean" as I've just used it with a beer that showed great head retention and lacing. Interestingly it was just about the same strength as well. OK, the aroma is fruity with some grainy malt. I'm finding orange and peach, and some green banana. If there's any truffle in there it's coming across as dusty earth. It's not a bold aroma but it's pleasant and welcoming. The flavor follows with a stronger and fuller fruit flavor that includes some lemon and mango. The honey is there as well, which is quite nice, and there's some earthiness that I'll assume is coming from the truffles but really that could be from hops or yeast as well. Ahhh, or maybe not. Interestingly I used some black truffles in the dinner that I prepared last night and I'm thinking now, yes, there is a little bit of that towards the end, once you get past the fruit that you find upfront, and really, probably even more so in the finish. And I know black and white truffles are different, OK, I got it, but I think I am finding something there. The other option is to say that there's not enough to really notice it so take your pick. The alcohol shows a bit, making its strength known, and that also helps to dry it in the finish. The bitterness is listed at 30 and that makes sense, with all of that residual sugar it comes of as quite mild, and yet it never actually becomes "sweet" and it's never sticky or cloying. In the mouth it's medium bodied with a bit of a dextrinous edge, and its moderate carbonation lends a gentle caress to the tongue before warming to become velvety smooth. Normally I'd want more carbonation and bite from a tripel but I think in this case it really works the way it is. So, forgetting about the truffle, I think this is a really special beer and I'm not even really sure why, it just has that certain je ne sais quoi that makes one beer more magical than another. At the very least, putting the honey together in a way that retains all of that flavor is pretty special. I've never really been a fan of Carton beers, to me they've always just seemed OK, but this one is different and I now have a new found respect for them.

Had as a blind review courtesy of MacMalt
Poured a cloudy golden orange with two fingers of white head.
Smell was somewhat fruity, peach, banana, bready malts, and underlying earthy tones.
Taste was similar with the earthy flavors becoming more dominant. Bready malts and fruitiness is still there as well. Getting some spice as well.
Feel is medium to full bodied with good carb levels, fairly creamy, low alcohol presence.
Overall a different flavor profile than any beer I've had to date, the earthiness was the most different aspect.
After the reveal I see that Carton hit what they were going for with this one, the truffle was definitely the earthy quality that I was getting.

Pours a light golden, minimal head that dissipates quickly. Huge aroma of truffle with notes of honey and Belgian yeast.
First taste is just a huge load of truffle up front, sweet honey, thick mouthfeel - like nectar. Loads of Belgian -type flavors: banana, esters, etc. This is a great Belgian tripel loaded up with truffles. Great idea, excellent execution.
I have never experienced a beer like this before. It is extremely rich and filling, like food. It wasn't filling from the malt, but I think the truffles. Like if you eat a small amount of creamy / buttery French food.

Looks semi opaque with an SRM color index of 5 according to can dated 6 days ago. Smells like mild mushroom,BO funk, Fresh dough. Tastes sweet and strange. Very earthy and dank. Feels well constructed and ABV well hidden.Overall I like mushrooms. Not so much in my beer. I have never had a white truffle , maybe that is why this beer seems weird and gross. Overall give it a shot. The truffles jacked this beer way up in price. Next day revision: Was trying to be optimistic after wasting 26 dollars on a 4 pack of 12oz cans. The bottom line this beer tastes horrible in my opinion, not to mention you can't get the mushroom taste to go away. It ruined other beer I tried to drink !

Pours a vibrant hazed gold color with a finger of white head that dissipates into a thick crown.

Yeast and pear sweetness in the nose.

Sweet tasting up front: pear, honey. A little cider and a kiss of palate mid-palate. Then a dry finish with an earthy something that could be the truffles.

Medium bodied, a touch oily and slick, with just enough carbonation.

This is a pretty decent triple. Not quite up there with the Belgian classics, but still pretty solid.

It looks ok...smell is ok at first but a dose of nasty truffle hits. Same for flavor. It's downright awful. Taste is a decent tripel...but it's ruined by the truffle. Aftertaste is puke like. A good tripel ruined...

Thanks goes out to thebeers for this brew.

12 oz. Can
Canned: 12/8/16

Poured into a tulip a really nice cloudy golden yellow color, very nice carbonation, with a really nice thick/creamy one-finger white head, which also leaves an oil slick and some sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, yeasty, I'm guessing the truffles (definitely a different kind of funk), kinda banana, heavy licorice. The taste is not too bad, malty, yeasty, some sweetness, heavy licorice, truffles(?). Full Body, ABV hidden fairly well/kinda hot. Overall, kinda tasty, but gets to ya after a while. Has some charateristics of a tripel, but it fades pretty quickly. Not glad I got a chance to try this one.

From a 12oz can

It is a cloudy apricot color with a lot of sediment/floaties. Decent amount of soapy white head.

It smells awful. I can't think of any experience with a worse smelling beer. I can only describe it as a burnt hair/perm and some sort of animals scent gland. It is taking a considerable amount of effort to attempt to drink it.

As luck would have it, it doesn't taste nearly as bad, but that is in no way a compliment. There is a significant amount of honey, some sweet ripe greeen fruit, and a very floraly flavor that makes me feel like I licked a perfume sprayer.

I am done with this.

This is a very ugly beer due to a sandstorm of sediment swirling around a peach-amber body. There's also not really a head, with only an off-white collar.

The aroma of white truffle is certainly present on this one, but thankfully isn't pungently overwhelming like the often ridiculous and artificial white truffle oil can be. Quite a fair amount of spicy phenols, with maybe a hint of yellow apple skin, and it smells like it might be quite hot. It's just unfortunate that white truffle has such an off-putting aroma for some.

Taste confirms this is boozy, but estery yellow apple does come off right away, quickly followed by a powerful phenolic spice, with the truffle providing an almost floral yet earth note in the background--in other words, thankfully, this is NOT an oddball truffle beer, but a beer with a little touch of truffle. I do get an element of honey on the back end.

It's way too hot for my liking, leaving my nose fuming during an exhale after a swallow, but body is moderate and nicely carbonated, with an almost sticky, semi-dry finish.

Can to snifter.

LOOK: bright golden color, small white head, some cloudiness from sediment...could've avoided by stopping pour before last 1/2 oz.
AROMA: yeast, truffle banana, a lot of wang, very pungent. Truffle gives it a heaviness.
TASTE: chardonnay, mold, truffle, earth, mineral, ginger, Wang.
FEEL: heavy and thick, mild carbonation.

Definately a sipper. Not a fan of most of these flavors, but the brew is certainly interesting. I warmed up to it A little on the middle, but by the last third I was sick of it. A ton going on. Not something i'd look for again.
I've come to appreciate Belgian styles more and have certainly less often referred to heavy or sour yeast flavors as the "belgian wang", but it is so strong in this I must invoke the use of the term again.
