While standing on Mount Mitchill, scanning our favorite local beaches, you can find paddles of the indigenous prickly pear cactus underfoot. Once you learn how to peel them (being carful of the less obvious finer thorns), there is a pleasing spring legume sweetness to be found. With Dune Fruit we add the meat of prickly pear paddles to a simply soured wheat beer to draw out their subtle vegetable sweetness and cut their viscidity with some acid. A delicate balance of vegetal and brightness in the form of an unassuming sour. Drink Dune Fruit because it’s the top of the summer and it’s time to shift that palate back to the sand.

Honestly, this is right in between a Berliner Weisse and a kettle sour and it's AMAZING. Tart with just a little bit of sweetness. Perfectly carbonated. 100% would buy again.

This is the first beer in this series from Carton that I didn't care for. Beers like Larry and Monkey Chased the Weasel are some of my favorites but this beer was way too acidic for me. The lingering tartness was less tart and more acidic and it just didn't sit well with me. nb

Carton Brewing Co. "Dune Fruit"
16 fl. oz. can, "JOURNEY BEGAN 07/08/19 START @ 38°F"
$4.99 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Well this should be good. I've had a few other beers with prickly pear and enjoyed them. They were all sour beers as well, so maybe that's what it goes best with. Anyway, it's poured a lightly hazy golden body beneath a full head of densely foamy white. The aroma is gently mineralish and lightly acidic with a light touch of fruitiness. It's certainly clean, which is nice as sometimes Berliner Weiss can be slightly funky. The flavor is much more tart than the aroma suggests but it's not puckeringly sour. I get the gist of the prickly pear, but not a whole lot of it. The malt is basic, and mildly sweetish underneath. In the mouth it's medium-light bodied and crisp. Looking back, the head dropped fairly quickly and there was very little lacing left once it had faded, but that's to be expected from a sour beer. In the end I think this is decent enough, but it doesn't enthrall me. Good summer beer though. Refreshing.

Canned on 6/6/18, poured from a 16oz can into a tulip glass. Dune Fruit pours a straw-like color with just a tiny bit of haze. Whispy white head that quickly dissipated into nothing. Sour yeast aroma with just a bit of malted wheat. Nice and tart at first. Not too sour but enough to get the job done. Tartness gives way to malted wheat sweetness with just a very subtle hint of veggies (presumably the prickly pear paddles). Dry finish. Overall it’s a nice Berliner Weiss. Very refreshing for the summer. I prefer Monkey Chased The Weasal a bit more than this. The mulberries added an extra dimension. I think this could be tweaked a bit, maybe adding some prickly pear fruit or syrup to cut through the tartness a bit more than just the paddles. I’ve had a few prickly pear wheat and sour ales in AZ that worked well and had an interesting purple color from the prickly pear juice but hey, what do I know though? I just drink the stuff.

On tap at brewer's tasting room.
I hike their source, the Sandy Hook barrier, all year round, so the cactii are baked into my landscape.
a) As with all fruit beers a bit loose bubbled, fast fade, low lace over a pleasing golden body.
s) complex original aroma, weiss and sweet/ pungent / fall ripe cactus flesh.
t) Suitably original and tart. Follows the smell, with the cactus like melon and salt.
f) Light body and carbonation. Crisp, dry, refreshing, puckering.
o) Jersey original.

16 oz can dated 6/15/17, poured into Behind the Veil glass.
L: 2F head with good retention, spotty lacing, and a cap and ring. Beer is a pleasant clear deep gold.
S: What I assume is prickly pear, sour yeast, and wheat malt.
T: Fruity and sour up front, yeast and malt really don't moderate it too much and it stays on the sour side the entire way through, but not overbearingly so. A little bit of a spicy punch midway through, again having no experience with prickly pear I assume it's involved.
F: Light bodied, pretty moderately carbonated. Decent drying, but maybe could have gone a bit more as this is fairly sour. Definitely poundable at 3.9%.
O: A nice refreshing sour for the hot summer months.

Had this on 2017-06-24 at the brewery on-tap and again on 2018-06-18 from a 16oz can.
A - Clear straw-gold with a 1-finger head that fades quickly with little lace.
S - Sourdough-wheat bread, grass, hint of prickly pear. Certainly has the smell of a good Berliner Weiss.
T - Quite tart. Echoes the smell pretty well but the wheat malt presence is stronger as is the prickly pear flavor, which tastes a bit like lemon-lime and melon. It's not the dominant flavor. I notice a little salt too.
M - Light body and light-medium carbonation. Crisp, refreshing and puckering.
O - This is the same base beer as their Monkey Chased the Weasel, which is flavored with Mulberries. I had them side-by-side on this day and preferred the Monkey Chased the Weasel, which was just a little more sour and had a more pleasing fruit flavor to me; but there's not a big difference since the base beer is the same. I got a four pack of this to go since Monkey wasn't available in cans. My wife also preferred the Monkey after having this a few days later with me at home.

Canned 6/15/2017. Poured into Carton teku glass. It pours a hazy, golden-orange color with a foamy, bright white head and lacing. There is abundant carbonation with a constant flow of bubbles ascending the glass. It has quite a nose: pear, lemon, and funky, fragrant spicing that reminded me of a Belgian ale. As expected, the taste is decidedly sour but it also has a saltiness that reminds me of a Gose. You can tell it has a wheat base and I noticed the tart pear taste mostly at the finish. This ale has lively carbonation and with its sub 4% ABV it's perfect for hot weather drinking. The can art features a drawing of a beach scene and this is an ideal beach beer. I'm generally not a fan of Sour Ales but I liked Dune Fruit more than I thought I would. I prefer it to Monkey Chased the Weasel.

Shimmering burnt yellow with a white collar remaining after the head loudly fizzles out.
Smell is prickly pear, cucumber, and salted toast.
Taste is quite sour at first and more complex. There is saltine and Colby cheese, with cucumber, prickly pear, and a crisp medium frothy body, finishing semi-dry. There develops an almost dragon fruit or red fruit gummy chew element, as well as a touch of classic lager running in background of corn and grape.
Well done.
