The thing about brewing with gourds and squashes is although they are a sugar source they act more on the body and bitterness than the sweetness. Much like on the table, you can run over them with spices and ignore what they bring or you can build flavors around their unique profile. Squashenator looks to gently dress acorn squash’s simple dull bitterness with a Doppelbock’s fruity treacle aromatics–nothing too heavy or brash–a fall beer with the simplicity of a tasty side dish on a harvest-laden table. Acorn squash roasted with a drizzle of blackstrap molasses and a shake of chili flake, added to the mash of a seasonally appropriate Bock. Drink Squashenator because no matter what fast food culture says autumn doesn’t really taste like a bathroom candle.

V. impressed by this beer. Not the run-of-the-mill pumpkin beer. More beer first, and then a thoughtful addition of seasonally available ingredients.
A: Dark amber maple color. Bright clarity. Mushrooming, bulbous light tan mushroom top condensing to a smooth cream lacquer.
S: Fall spices--cinnnamon, mace. Light herbal pop of vanilla and a fruity earthiness. Dash of spice noticeable in the background accentuates all other aromas, and I actually missed it the first time. Touch of caramel malt, browning acorn squash in the oven with a spicy fennel and cranberry pumpernickel stuffing.
M: Med body, smooth feel, drying finish. Warmth comes from chili mostly.
T: Fruity to start. Light currant or cocoa dusted raw fig. Earthy bitterness in the middle: the acorn squash dashed with cinnamon, cranberry tartness, toasted nut/seed mix, and reserved sweetness from the molasses. Finish is noticeably warm as the chili flake is enough to make the mouth tingle enhancing the sweetness of the next sip. From the beginning to end, the concept of this beer is excecuted with brilliance. A 'fall' beer I'd enjoy right through the spring.

Served on cask temp on tap at Carton tasting room on Dec 30 2017.
a) Amber, hazed, muddy brown body, capped with a lasting tan head; lacing and retention are ample.
s) Nothing overdone, yet complex. Aroma bursts with spice cabinet: chile, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, pumpkin, vanilla, and molasses over a creamy thanksgiving squash puree.
t) Follows smell but more malt and fruit flesh. Sweet, spicy, malty, roasted, baked“acorn squash” peppered with chile flakes.
f) full fruit body, with moderate carbonation and clean food pairing finish.
o) As fine a doppelbock, squash beer to be found from the land.

Big fliptop bottle, sample from the brewery.
Clear with a deep tawny hue, thin lacing stays for the duration. Smells like a big malty Doppelbock, some faint gourd flesh in the nose ... clean. Smooth and full bodied. A big malt bomb, bready with earthy sugary tones. Some squash in the middle and a kick of chili flake in the end which grows a bit with each sip. Modest hopping, alcohol warmth, & a maltiness that does not go sweet. Lots of fun this beer is.

Served on Tap:
A: Amber, dark brown pour, capped with a thin tan head; lacing and retention were minimal
S: Sweet, spiced aroma that's encapsulated by cinnamon, cloves, molasses, nutmeg, pumpkin, apple, and vanilla
T: Sweet, spicy, malty, and roast(y) surmise the palate, with the obvious aroma notes making their manifestation: pumpkin, caramel, nutmeg, cloves, and a bit of that “acorn squash”
M: Sweet, and smooth, with heat; slight ABV awareness, medium/light feel
O: A playful take on Bock, with a nicely incorporated (chili spice) accessory: neither confrontational nor overshadowing
