Carton Brewing Company
New Jersey, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Like all things truly Jersey, 077XX makes the most in balancing through its accentuation of extremes. Inspired by the west coast IPAs we love, we added a thump of hops to a dynamic malt profile and chose a yeast to drive these two further than they wanted to go. Throw our water into this mix and you will find dank green resinous hops popping over orange, mango and papaya aromas, with just enough sweetness of body to make the long finish a pleasure to have around. Drink 0’Dub when your night matters.

One day old air tight growler. Rollicking white-crested waves atop cloudy pineapple juice.

Strong citrus floral notes on the nose. Very smooth and balanced. Hoppy, but even my non-hops-loving fiance liked it.

This is like a more citrusy, more flavorful Sculpin. This is like a Sculpin if it was better.
Definitely pineapple. Maybe even some pulp in here.

Carbonation is still solid. Another day it might start to get flat. Still bursting with flavor.

DATE TASTED: August 7, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: HopDevil nonick... OCCASION: prepping for birthday number 39 with Matt, Jer and Sharknado 3... APPEARANCE: from fresh growler: light golden body with slight effervescence; nice head retention of an off-white single-finger ring; reasonable smears of tracings; strong head retention... AROMA: a beautiful collaboration of pineapple, mango and orange peel with the resin and pinecone necessary to enrapture the senses; the balance of malt and hop is appreciable; the balance comes with a bit of caramel and wet malts... PALATE: strong carbonation livens the mouth, with a medium-bodied, reasonable finish--easy drinking and sessionable... TASTE: a powerful yet drinkable 7.8% ABV; the citrus is strong and tangible; a strong, flavorful pint... OVERALL: pleased to have Carton in our backyard--and more pleased that this Imperial truly drinks like a pale ale; full-bodied and rewarding; active and filling...

On tap - Filled a 32oz Crowler Can

As soon as a cracked the can I could smell this beer. Wonderful aroma of grapefruits, oranges, mangos, some dank pineyness. A little citrus.

The taste follows perfectly. Big ruby red type grapefruit taste, grapefruit rind, oranges, mangos, tropical citrus, dank resiness pine. Slightly bitter aftertaste. Slightly creamy mouthfeel.

Overall this beer is absolutely delicious. Possibly my favorite DIPA at the moment if not top 3 for sure. I'll be filling up Crowlers/Growlers as much as possible.

Very nice brew. Had on tap. Pours a virbant gold. The hop profile is apparent in both the aroma and taste. Very very smooth, lightly carbonated. Low ABV for a DIPA and I could definitely have another one.

A full flavored IPA for sure. The smell is sweet caramel malt with an earthy spiciness and then piney grapefruit orange hops with a hint of mango. The taste is similar with a very strong bitter finish. Pretty in-your-face overall. yb

12 oz can. Poured a brown orange with a little fluffy white head. Head lingered a bit. Smells of wet hops and not tropical citrus. Guessing this is going to taste like am east coast pine tree. First taste is heavy wet hops, bitter. Some tropical citrus flows behind but overall just another bitter wet hopped IPA. Really disappointed. Did I get an old can? No date on the bottom. This tasted exactly like a fresh bottle of Parkway Get Bent. Nothing exciting.

Thanks to freefs119 (Reddit) for this one, shared with rudzud.

Pours a decent creamy fluffy head fades at a med peace, clear honey orange color, but murky color in the other glass.

Nose is mostly hops, fresh cut grass, touch of pine resin in the background, little citrus and orange cream, quite dank, earthy resin, light creamy malt. Some mild herbal spicy hops later.

Taste brings a weird sweet malt, malty toasted amber flavours, straight up toasted grains. Then hops, earthy grassy dank resin, some mild pine notes, hint of citrus and orange cream orange peel. Finish is pretty bitter, touch of spicy briny hops, earthy pine sap, chewy hop.

Mouth is med bod, decent fluffy carb.

Overall ok, decent but nothing special.

Pours a dark apricot color. The nose is fruity sweet with oranges and citrus. The body is lightly dry with a nice malt sweetness followed by a restrained bitter finish. Really refreshing DIPA.

Thanks to paddyfrankie.

Not hazy. Small head fades fast.

Mild smell of dank and tropical fruits.

Tastes stronger than it smells. Really bitter, some tropical and pine.

Typical feel. Slight burn.

Definitely a satisfying DIPA, with good balance, but the hop flavors are mostly just bitter, without the complexity of the very best DIPAs.

Thanks to JLindros for sharing this.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great a nice clear golden hue with a thin head that fades to leave thin wisps and a light lacing.

S - Aromas of dank hops, very west coast style. Lots of wet citrus and little bit of tropical notes.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, lots of bitterness. Dank resin, grains, wet, genetic hops. Really nothing special with a pleasant generic bitterness.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, crisp.

O - Overall this beer was just alright, no one thing really stands out. Lots of decent bitterness.

This beat the Ballast Point Sculpin, the Boulevard Heavy Lifting, and the Spellbound IPA in a blind tasting that I attended last weekend. Very Impressive.

Draft.

A: Pineapple-orange coloring, thin skim white head poured into a cold shaker pint. Still carbonation with stratified ring lacing down the vessel.

S: Fresh wet pineapple-mango-orange aroma, wet and juicy, of good strength. Duration was good.

T: Upfront had a brass bitternes of dry pine, bittering orange peel. Grassy bitterness moves in along with dry grapefruit peel, dry tropical fruit lingering for a good period. Managebility increases as the tongue numbs from the overload of hop bitterness. Pale malts keeps things crisp with a dry finish of straw-malt.

M: Light bodied, feels sharp and crisp despite low carbonation visibility. Eases off the tongue with a flowery pollen like coating of hop flower texture.

O: Agressively hopped, dry and bittering with a fresh wet tropical aroma, only wish the flavor would of followed the nose a bit more. Dry hop bitterning finish.

Not sure on canning date.

L - Pours an amber gold body that is opaque and has a two finger eggshell head. Great retention and lacing.

S - Tropical fruits and pine resin. Smells dank.

T - Light tropical fruits backed with by dank pine resin with a bitter hop bite ending.

F - Medium bodied and medium carbonation. So easy to drink.

O - Definitely worth a try if you like a tropical/pine IIPA. I dug it.

Why doesn't this beer have a cult following yet. I got this in a trade so I could add New Jersey to my list. Little did I know I was getting this tremendous fruity, dank, hop bomb. The nose on this is amazing I poured a 16oz can into a glass and could smell it when I walked across the room. Fruit and floral scents carry through the air. The taste is just as good but there is a real dank taste at first then it gets sweet and fruity. This is truly amazing.

Super fresh. Poured golden amber (with predominantly yellow hue in the light). Mango and peach notes dominate over a clean, crackery malt profile. Nose has hints of earthy and piney resins coming through. On the palate, these piney and earthy flavors hit BIG off the jump. Hints of the peach and mango come through in the aftertaste. All balanced by hearty bitterness. Some alcohol comes through on this one. Clean, slightly oily/coating mouthfeel characteristic of a DIPA. Appropriate. Unique East Coast DIPA, easily crushable, but worth savoring. Seek out Carton.

pours a hazy gold with a thick head.

smells very sweet. full of citrus, grapefruit and a lot of mango.

taste is fantastic, very clean and easy to drink. full of citrus, lots of grapefruit and mango. bitterness is somewhat subdued. it isn't over the top bitter but it does finish very bitter. smooth drinking, a nice 7.8% dIPA.

overall this is damn good, one of my favorite IPAs and certainly my favorite Carton beer. glad i can pick this up every so often without having to drive to the brewery.

Second Fiddle, Gbot & This are VERY similar to each other. I might be a tad bit buzzed while reviewing this. I'd easily grab w/o hesitation while buzzed....more than likely sober too. Cheers!

Employing some of the more sexy hops on the market, making an easy drinking, high gravity hop bomb seems to be easy nowadays. Though not as easy as it seems, the Carton Brewers have channeled their inner Heady and given us a juicy, tropical and bitter creaminess for which the taste buds simply yearn.

Bright and beautiful, its golden straw hues highlight is calming carbonation through a slightly diffused glow. Building a head of lather and froth, the scent rolls onto the nose with white grapefruit, under-ripened orange, mango, passionfruit, pineapple, gooseberry and lime. Its honied sweet taste coats the tongue and brings on a light candied and caramelized taste before the hops really go to work upon the palate.

What's short and sweet of malts early, all of that is short lived as the hops crash the party and cast the sweetness aside. But its that blend of citrusy oranges and grapefruit that meld with the softer tropical fruit flavors for a sensation of sherbet or cream sickle only to be accompanied with bitter grasses, herbs, verbena and citrus peel.

Creamy, malty-dry and clean- the medium-light ale trends drier and drier as the hop oils build and the alcohol evaporate the tongue. What's left is a fond memory of simple citrus on the palate.

A: Orange-amber in color with a finger of white head. Was hoping for a more brilliant color given the description.

S: Aroma of pineapple juice and pine.

T: Follows nose. Pineapple hits first, followed by resinous flavor, backed up with a bitter hop finish. Finish is actually less bitter than the 80 IBU's would usually indicate.

M: Medium-high carbonation as expected. Nice and refreshing.

O: A really top notch DIPA. Especially appreciate the tropical flavors.

Poured out of a can, love the cloudy orange look of this beer, nice frothy head. Lot of different taste going on here, fruity mango, orange, just a perfect DIPA! One of the best beers I've had out of a can! Goes down smooth, watch out!
