On tap at Pony Bar. Pours black with a head that's a little on the small side for the style; fair retention, but decent creamy looking lacing on the glass. Aroma is very roasty; mild sweet chocolatey notes emerge as well as an undercurrent of bitter hops that become more assertive as the beer comes to temperature.
The flavor follows the nose and is aggressively roasty, almost burnt, as advertised. Frankly it's a little bit dominating in the overall taste and throws things a little out of whack for my palate. Mild sweetness and chocolate flavor, and again, a late emerging, surprising strong hoppy bitter note not usually encountered in this style.
The body and carbonation both are medium; somewhat vaguely fizzier than I'd like; and the milky lactose creaminess in both taste and feel could be more present.
I'm a big fan of this brewery in general but this was just good, not great, for me. Didn't really hit all the satisfying notes I look for in a milk stout. Not the typical attempt at this style, which is cool in and of itself, but I didn't find the end result to be outstanding.

At the brewery, in a flight.
Carton Brewing "Carton Of Milk" Stout
Shhh. I think they're working on a canned Nitro release....
A: Solid stout appearance. Looks like a pint of Guinness, black-brown with a creamy light tan head. Excellent retention and lacing.
S: stout aroma with roasted dark malts; black coffee acidity, fresh, big, inviting.
T: Follows the smell with strong stout flavor. There a sweetness in the foretaste, but it doesnt finish sweet, and I like that see saw. full flavored, complex, and yet simple - when fresh this is a great brew.
F: It's thicker than Guinness, and smooth... so plenty of claim to being a great milk stout - up there with Left Hand and Keenan's

Had this cask conditioned at the Brick House in South Plainfield, NJ. They serve the cask beer warm, so I asked for a super frosted glass. It's delicious. The ABV is low enough so that I can enjoy three pints with an order of wings. I reminded me of Guinness from years ago. It wasn't sweet at all, so I wonder if the reference to milk is just a name with no lactose sugar added. I hope to be back soon before they run out.

Nitro-d growler. Always iffy with that. No in-store consumption what now?
Inky black body. Chocolate head. 40 minutes from home, already losing it's grip on the nitro.
Smell is charred toast, with a buttery cocoa powder thing going on. Just a twinge of coffee.
Peanuty, subtle wafer sweetness, but lingering citrusy bitterness. moderate acidity. Closer to a dry stout then anything. Calcium & saline finish.
Carbonation was quietly leaving out the side entrance. Started off at about an average, prickly fizz, & ended at just a trickle above flat, all in about 2 hours.
Damn, now I'm searching the fridge for something sweet. Grrr...

First had: on tap at Carton
A pretty standard stout here. Looked as you might expect: dark brown-black with a sturdy cap of tan head; moderate retention and lacing. Basic stouty aroma: dark malts, roasty, notes of coffee and cocoa. Taste was pretty average, dark roasty malts, again, notes of coffee and baker's chocolate, not much lactose sweetness, which is fine, but with a name like "Carton of Milk," I'd kind of expect the milk-stout aspect (aka lactose) to be used a little more liberally. Body was about medium, decent mouthfeel, not as smooth as I would like, but I'd bet a nitro tap would really help this beer. An ok stout overall.
