MONKEY CHASED THE WEASEL
Sour Ale
ABV: 3.9% | IBU: Sour | SRM: Ojo de Gallo
The backyard of our brewery has a mulberry tree that drops its fruit in the first days of summer. We moved into our building during early summer 2011, tracking a bright purple path through our new home with every laden step. It was then we decided: if mulberry was going to get that deep into the brewery, it probably should get into a beer as well. Stealing a process from Berliners, we let the lactics in a wheated mash sour up to a green apple/lemon level, accentuating the bright side of the mulberry profile. Meant for quaffing when there is no reason to avoid direct sunlight on balmy summer days, drink Monkey Chased The Weasel because there is more sun than moon at the top.

Served on-tap at Iron Monkey in Jersey City, NJ
A: Pours a hazy pale straw yellow in color with some light amounts of slow visible carbonation with some hints of golden yellow + lemon yellow highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall fizzy white head that quickly reduces to to a small patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sourness with notes of citrus/lemon and hints of wheat + light fruit (granny smith apple).
T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of sour wheat with light notes of citrus/lemon and granny smith apple. Some light notes of lactic acid tartness/sourness which linger in the finish.
M: Light bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Light to moderate amounts of acidic prickliness.
O: Easy to drink and very refreshing on a hot summer afternoon/evening. I really enjoy this one and could really see myself enjoying quite a few of these. Definitely sessionable.

(16 oz can, journey began 06/02/23; purchased cold single at Clayton Liquors... poured into an Allagash classic chalice)
L: rather clear, brassy-hued liquid; foam fleetingly fizzles off, a second glass cleaning fixed that and revealed it slowly settling... nothing out of the ordinary or extraordinary
S: berry butter cookie, berry getting more expressive after the foam subsides; faint nutty yeast accent, with subtle lactic funk... relatively wheaty with moderate overall intensity, and not one off-aroma
T: berry-drenched small wheat ale, tartness touching sweet-tart puckering, just without the underlying sugars; tartness lasting long through the aftertaste, lemon-pithy... has that (butter) cookie doughiness as detected on the nose... another reviewer mentioned hibiscus, and I totally get that as well
F: bit of a slow silky slide in the finish... mildly fizzy... lip-smacky all day, front of palate tween the inner lips and teeth get stickier as it goes... very dynamic
O: I needed something like this right now... berry flavor is just enough to be showcased... excellent concept and execution (2237)

Very light with slight pink hue on the pour settling into a mostly transparent apple juice in the glass. An inch of fizzy short lived head. Aroma has a pleasant funk accentuated by what I can only assume is the mulberry. Taste is really interesting. In the first second or two I don't pick up much, but mid palate the earthy funk with an almost hibiscus type flavor really shows up. Nice long finish. Not a ton of carbonation. Easy drinking and quite tasty.

Single, 16 ounce can copped from Route 22 in Union. Pours a lucid, golden hue with moderate frothing. Asserting aroma and mouthfeel redolent of hibiscus and ginger. Good stuff.

Pours a clear light straw color with a slight purple hue, minimal head. Aroma is citrusy, slight funk and sourness. Flavor is light lemon zest, some grape must, sour cherry, light grapefruit. Light bodied and effervescent, has a lingering sourness that is a little like wet cardboard on the finish.
Overall a very light bodied beer, fairly enjoyable, love the low abv, might buy again...

Glad to see this back, now reviewed in my missing lineup from my hometown brewer: Carton.
My partner Victoria loved this as most sours, but this scored and soured higher.
a) Clear pale yellow body, small white head, short last, little lace.
s) Lemony, bright sour nose.
t) Super packed with complex, berry, grape, lemon, yeast, grass, cider, and white wine like flavors.
f) Bright effervescent, clean delightful. Great summer sour - like champagne.

After drinking through about a case of this I have really come to love it. The flavors are subtle, nuanced, and perfectly balanced. I can't say mulberry is an identifiable flavor but I had mulberries in my yard as a kid and the smell of this beer just makes me think of summer. Great refreshing and super drinkable beer. This is the best of the highlander series that I have tried. yb

Poured from 16 oz. can into Carton teku glass. It pours a slightly hazy, golden straw color with a frothy, milk-white head and lacing that clung to the glass through the pour. It has an interesting smell of sour wheat and some funky spice. I'm not familiar with the smell of mulberry but I guess that was present, as well. The taste was also truly unique: like combining chardonnay with a marzen: it is both fruity and sour, and malty in an earthy way. It's quite difficult to describe. There is also a funky spiciness that reminded me of a Belgian Pale Ale. It is light and crisp, with lively carbonation, and at only 3.9% ABV it is extremely drinkable. This may be the strangest review I've written on BA. This is an unusual beer but a thoroughly enjoyable one.
