MONKEY CHASED THE WEASEL
Sour Ale
ABV: 3.9% | IBU: Sour | SRM: Ojo de Gallo

The backyard of our brewery has a mulberry tree that drops its fruit in the first days of summer. We moved into our building during early summer 2011, tracking a bright purple path through our new home with every laden step. It was then we decided: if mulberry was going to get that deep into the brewery, it probably should get into a beer as well. Stealing a process from Berliners, we let the lactics in a wheated mash sour up to a green apple/lemon level, accentuating the bright side of the mulberry profile. Meant for quaffing when there is no reason to avoid direct sunlight on balmy summer days, drink Monkey Chased The Weasel because there is more sun than moon at the top.

Pours a light golden color with a small quickly dissipating white head.

Aromas begin with the obviously solid backbone of wheat, semi-sour maltiness coupled with a light berry sweetness and some complementary tart fruitiness. As it warms you get more of the Brett sourness and emerging lactic notes. The fruit flavors never overwhelm and the acidity stays in check.

Mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with medium carbonation. Finish is lightly tart and semi-fruity.

Overall this is a super flavorful beer for being so light in ABV. I normally am not a fan of this style at all, but the addition of mulberries has added a freshing dynamic that elevates this beer to a new level. So impressed by Carton and super-psyched to see more great local beer from NJ.

growler poured into taster - thanks brad

Pours a hazy golden orange color with a crop of white head resting on top. Some splotchy lacing is left behind along with a cloud of filmy retention.

Funky and fruity in the nose with some pleasant lactic tartness. Wheat and soft malts with a touch of sweetness and barnyard mustiness.

Tart and snappy on the tongue up front with a mellowed sourness. Not very aggressive, with a tempering berry and green apple flavor that adds a dash of sweetness. Wheat and soft malts with a wet, yeasty funk on the back end. Finishes a little fruity and tart.

Lighter medium body, crisp and bubbly on the tongue - highly refreshing. I was waiting since March to try this and I'm definitely excited about this one. Nice balance between low alcohol, tartness and fruit - I want another growler!

Can shared at the Swamp Head Batch 600 release. Pours a purplish pink color with a creamy white head on top. Aroma of mulberries, sour vinegar, wheaty malts, and berliner like yeastiness. Flavor follows with big notes of mulberries--wow they go really well in this style--wheat malts, yeasty tart berliner notes, some lemon peel, and some floral notes. Really light bodied with high carbonation. While I’m not a fan of the style generally, this was very nice. I would have it again for sure.

Served on-tap at Iron Monkey in Jersey City, NJ

A: Pours a hazy pale straw yellow in color with some light amounts of slow visible carbonation with some hints of golden yellow + lemon yellow highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall fizzy white head that quickly reduces to to a small patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of sourness with notes of citrus/lemon and hints of wheat + light fruit (granny smith apple).

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of sour wheat with light notes of citrus/lemon and granny smith apple. Some light notes of lactic acid tartness/sourness which linger in the finish.

M: Light bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Light to moderate amounts of acidic prickliness.

O: Easy to drink and very refreshing on a hot summer afternoon/evening. I really enjoy this one and could really see myself enjoying quite a few of these. Definitely sessionable.

Thanks to Thebrewracho for sharing this one at Wowcoolman's tasting.

Pours a hazy light orange-red with a foamy bone head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is sour with malt, berry, fruit, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with sour berry and earth flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty, light, and easy to drink.

Serving type: can.

T: Mostly tart wheat with fruit (mulberries) like a blackberry and some lemony citrus.

M: Light body and light carbonation. Finishes wheaty and tart.

O: A nice light Berliner Weisse.

On-tap at Texas Arizona, Hoboken, NJ

A: The beer is very light yellow in color and has slight hints of visible carbonation. It poured with a very thin white head that quickly faded down into lacing on the surface and eventually completely disappeared, leaving only a thin ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are faint aromas of sourness in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has a light amount of sourness and tart notes of mulberries.
M: It feels light-bodied and rather tart on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer goes down easily and is very sessionable. It is a good representation of the style.
