MONKEY CHASED THE WEASEL
Sour Ale
ABV: 3.9% | IBU: Sour | SRM: Ojo de Gallo

The backyard of our brewery has a mulberry tree that drops its fruit in the first days of summer. We moved into our building during early summer 2011, tracking a bright purple path through our new home with every laden step. It was then we decided: if mulberry was going to get that deep into the brewery, it probably should get into a beer as well. Stealing a process from Berliners, we let the lactics in a wheated mash sour up to a green apple/lemon level, accentuating the bright side of the mulberry profile. Meant for quaffing when there is no reason to avoid direct sunlight on balmy summer days, drink Monkey Chased The Weasel because there is more sun than moon at the top.

Had this on 2014-06-29 at the brewery.

A - Orange-straw with a hint of pink depending on how you hold the glass. 1-finger head that fades quickly with zero lace.

S - Sourdough-wheat bread, grass, hint of fruit. Certainly has the smell of a good Berliner Weiss.

T - Quite tart. Echoes the smell pretty well but the wheat malt presence is stronger as is the fruit flavor, which definitely is mulberry. I've been picking and eating them off the trees all this month of June while hiking and I can easily identify their flavor in this beer. Mulberries are delicious and have a balance between sweet and tart, which works really well here. The brewer did an excellent job of letting the mulberry flavor poke through to compliment the Berliner Weiss style without turning this into something even remotely close to the undrinkable-for-me, "Leinenkugel's Berry Weiss". I'm quite impressed.

M - Light body and light-medium carbonation. Crisp, refreshing and puckering.

O - It was a three-hour, one-way drive from my house to the brewery to try this, as well as the other brews on-tap. I also worked in a hike at the beach at nearby Sandy Hook, and then drove back home. I brought back this brew, Boat and 077XX. All are very good, but from a uniqueness standpoint, this stands above the others. I think my wife is really going to like this one when she tries it. I certainly do.

Growler

Acquired via trade
Thanks, YaKnowBrady!

A lighter than grapefruit flesh color with a quickly-forming, nicely carbed, small-bubbled white head. Not a lot of persistence or retention. Bit of stickiness.

Very nice aroma. A bit of tartness, mild fruit, definite wheat, some lemon, and just a tiny bit of an earthy hay character.

The wheat and earthy hay character carry the flavor, though there are nice citrus (lemon) notes throughout. Moderate lactic tart character. All the flavors come together very nicely. Incredibly drinkable.

Thinner to near-medium bodied with near-high carbonation. Disappearing but with a long wheat-flavored finish. Fantastic. Well crafted beer.

Excellent, interesting, tasty berliner. Would happily drink again.

The beer pours an odd color of pink hued orange. Very strange. With a thin fizzy white cap that quickly dissipates. I imagine the pink hue is due to the mulberries, which turn from pink to red as they ripen.

The scent of the beer is fruity, with a sour apple and yeast flavor. Very subtle scent that is difficult to pick up. The flavor is much stronger and you certainly get bang for your abv. Very tart of green apple and lemon. A slight puckering finish with a lingering wheat flavor. I could willingly drink this all day all summer. Each sip refreshes you for the next. I love that the abv is low, which makes sense in the summer. Tons of flavor. Notes of pear, cherry and seriously tart.

Mouthfeel is lighter bodied, but very well carbonated. Highly drinkable and very flavorful. As I drink it I think it would also act as an excellent base for some summer punch.

In Newark, NJ for work. Found this on tap at a local store. Poured from a 32 oz. growler into a hotel room tumbler because that's all I got, fool!

A. Pours a hazy peach color with a golden pinkish hue in the center that gradually fades to a very pale straw along the edges. Good finger of white, crisp head on the pour but that quickly dissipates to the faintest of rings. Very interesting color that screams "refreshing".

S. Apples, grapefruit, a tinge of peach, some barnyard funk, hints of light grain, and a little bit of cheese.

T. Similar to the nose, with apples, peach, wheat grain, some berry sweetness, drying yeast, and some tart funk.

M. Drying, tart, but with a crisp, sweet, refreshing finish. Carbonation is moderate-high.

O. This is an excellent Berliner. I'm not overly familiar with the style, but this one impresses. It's a great balance between tartness & funk, wheat & sweet. Its low ABV and crispness make this an excellent summer beer. Strong offering here from Carton, and I'm happy to have found this on tap at a local store.

On-tap at Tørst.

A: Cloudy pale peach-hued body with a finger of creamy off-white head that, sadly, disappears completely and leaves not a trace. Pretty weak.

S: Musty, funky wheat - like the inside of a grain elevator. Some slightly rotten apples and flinty minerality as well. Really weird, and I like it.

T: Tart lactic acid up front, with apple, wheat, and earthy funk. Musty and leafy on the finish, with some nice lingering granny smith tartness on the aftertaste. Delicious and complex.

M: Creamy carbonation in a medium body. Excellent.

O: Bizarre and hugely enjoyable. I had this side-by-side with Hottenroth, and the contrast was striking: that beer was clean, crisp, and consistent; this one was heavy, variable, and just weird. I preferred this one.

Cheers!

A: Dark gold in color, clear but not brilliant. Finger thick eggshell head with moderate retention and spotted lacing.

S: Cereal grains, wet hay, raw wheat, sour lemon. Funky with some mild tart undertones.

T: Funky at the front of the palate with some wet hay and must like flavors strong taste of cereal like grains rolls over mid palate quickly taken over by a lemony lactic sour tartness. Very flavorful and refreshing.

F: Smooth light-medium body with soft carbonation that finishes dry.

O: Overall a fantastic Berliner Weiss. Crisp, flavorful, drinkable, and refreshing. It's so nice to see a local brewery doing a Berliner! Keep up the good work guys.

Pourded into a wine glass, pinkish hued in color, with a half of finger of large white bubbled head. Smells of wheat and not much else. Easy drinking that's for sure. A slight sour crispness to it. Super duper crushable. Don't know what a Mulberry taste like, but there is a little bit of a berry taste to it. This was really nice summer beer. Not super tart, but definitely an above par berliner.

On tap at the George St alehouse in new Brunswick.

Arrives in a pint glass with no foam present. Aroma is mild, some vinegar notes and maybe a kiss of malt sweetness.

Very pleasantly tart like a sour apple flavor. Lingering wheat malt finish. Finishes very dry and refreshing.

This is a very nice, understated sour. Not terribly complex, but a great beginner sour beer. Insanely drinkable.
