DIGGER | Clam Ale With Lemongrass

"Sure, there are oyster stouts, but we are a clam town. Are there any clam beers?"
"Not that I've ever heard of."
"Stout wouldn't make sense. Let's make it super pale. We can lean on the stoniness of our water to show the clams."
"We could make it a Gose, the salt would help push the clam idea even further."
"Nice. How should we hop it?"
"Something very simple but pretty, like Green Bullet."
"Let's add something to the boil to make it more like a pot of steamed clams, something like lemongrass."
"Okay. So a simple Gose dressed up with Cherrystone clams with a touch of Green Bullet hops, tied together with lemongrass."
"It should be cool when it gets nice and hot in July, like a day at a clam shack in a shaker pint."
Drink Digger because that happened.

On-tap at Barcade, Jersey City, NJ

A: The beer is hazy light pale yellow in color. It poured with a thin white head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of sourness are present in the nose.
T: The taste has slight bits of sourness along with notes of spices and salt, the latter of which lingers through the finish.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and is a nice choice for a summer beer. I really like how new breweries are rediscovering old beer styles.

On tap in Long Branch, NJ.

a - Pours a slightly hazed pale yellow color with two inches of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident. Good looker, a summer feel to it.

s - Smells of lemon, wheat, malt. Approachable, but light; a bit of clams but very subtle. Refreshing. Sessionable.

t - Follows the smell. Tastes of lemon, lemongrass, citrus hops, wheat, grains, malts, and biscuit. Not much clams but very refreshing

m - Very light body and moderate carbonation. Very easy to drink.

o - Overall a session beer. I loved it. A shore beer, easy to session. Worth checking out.

A_Pale golden. Pilsener esque

S_Pale wheat, citrus and a mild pine

T_Akin to the smell. Sweet yet dry grains up front followed by a hit of mild bitterness and citrus. Aftertaste has a bit of a salty feel

M_Light bodied with a tight carbonation.

D_Not really a gose. Still it's tasty nonetheless.

Not really a gose but a damn good and refreshing wheat beer. Hints of salt are present after more than a few sips with some briny flavor from the clams coaxing it out just a bit. Being that I am a salt addict and would prefer just a little more but this beer is a good summer ender and yet another interesting recipe from the gang at Carton.

Served on-tap at Barcade in Jersey City, NJ

A: Pours a very hazy pale straw yellow in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle visible carbonation and some faint lemon yellow highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall thin white head that reduces to a large patch of very thin film (made up of larger bubbles) and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light aromas of sourness and hints of brininess are present.

T: Upfront there is a light amount of sourness to the flavor of this beer with light hints of wheat. There are some lighter flavors of salt/brininess and hints of spices.

M: Light bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: An interesting way to develop a Gose beer with the use of clams (and it explains the name). Easy to drink and refreshing, a nice example for the style and one I would be happy to have again. A nice summer beer - glad that I have started to see more of this style from newer breweries this summer.

From 08/07/13 notes. Had on tap at Stag's Head in NYC.

a - Pours a somewhat clear pale yellow color with two inches of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of lemon, wheat, pale malts, and some light citrus. Nice but light; no clams or seafood at all, and no salt.

t - Tastes of lemongrass, citrus hops, wheat, grains, pale malts, and biscuit malts. No salt at first, but then it comes out a little bit as I drink it. No seafood again, a small step up from the nose.

m - Light body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a decent beer. Not a ton of salt and didn't notice the clams at all, a light and refreshing beer. Worth checking out.
