Dry Stouts are to Espresso as Milk Stouts are to Macchiatos. Milk Stouts begin just as many Stouts begin - with Pale type Malts coupled with Roasted Malts for color and bite. The addition of Lactose sugar is what gives a Milk Stout its je ne sais quois- joke sorta stolen from Steve Martin. Lactose sugar isn't really fermented by yeast the way other sugars are and it remains in the brew as a modifier. Lactose gives a light sweetness without being cloying and I think a nice silkiness to the beer as well. At 4.4% you can have a few and decide if I'm right and you can really get into my sorta-stolen Steve Martin Joke.

I just recently had this beer and became a big fan. It's very dark in color but has a rich chocolate taste. I had one before dinner and one after dinner it went very well with food. If you like stouts and see this beer on tap I would recommend giving it a try I don't think you would be disappointed. (300 characters)

On tap at The Bridge in St. Louis on 7/2/12.

A - Poured an opaque, jet black color with a one-finger, tan head of bubbly foam. It left sudsy sheets of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of chocolate and some sweetness.

T - Good cocoa taste with some creamy sweetness. A very light bitterness.

M - It was crisp and smooth with a creamy touch. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a nice milk stout. Nice cocoa flavor. (453 characters)

Appearance - It is a dark brown, with not much of a head.

Smell - It is a sweet malty smell, with chocolate as well.

Taste - It is a sweet stout, with a slight bitterness; chocolate and coffee notes.

Mouthfeel - It is has good carbonation for a milk stout, but is a bit light.

Overall - A decent milk stout. (311 characters)

Solid black in color with no light penetrating through. Light lacing. Despite repeated efforts, I'm not getting any aroma. Perhaps the lactose nixed it? I taste a chocolatey sweetness that transitions to a light bitterness from the dark malt. It then switches back to sweetness. The mouth is creamy and silky smooth. (322 characters)

Pours a black color. 1/4 inch head of an off-tan color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, roasted malt, oatmeal, hint of yeast, and hint of caramel malt. Fits the style of a Milk Stout. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, oatmeal, hint of roasted malt, and slight yeast. Overall, not complex, but simple and refreshing. (395 characters)
