Black Lager Style, a.k.a. ~Schwarzbier~ is flowing through the taps. As we pour you a beer you'll notice that this Lager is pretty darn dark- not quite black, but getting there. The next thing you'll notice is a subtle off-white cap of foam and a discreet, fragrant roast aroma. Hopefully the next thing you notice is that you are drinking and enjoying it. Black Lagers are in a pretty narrow category and while ours does have an apparent edge from roasted malt, the relaxed and clean nature of the Pils Malt base really makes this beer a solid drinker. Hops are from Hallertau again and ABV clocks in at 4.5 so you don't have to clock out.

Black in color with a fingernail of beige on top. The aroma is of dark bread and roasted malt. I'm tasting sweet, dark malt and honey wheat bread. The mouth is dry and refreshing.

On draft in shaker pint.
Very dark brown, not quite black.thick cream colored head that sticks around. Good lacing. Mild roast aroma. Taste has notes of milk chocolate and toasted marshmallow. Good balance, not sweet nor dry. Thin to medium bodied. Flavorful but easy drinking.

Pours a clear, black color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of roasted malt, sweet malt, hint of yeast, slight hop, hint of coffee, and slight caramel malt. Fits the style of a Schwarzbier. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with a low carbonation level. Tastes of roasted malt, sweet malt, hint of caramel malt, hint of yeast, and a hint of hop. Overall, very fresh tasting. Good appearance, aroma, feel, body, and blend.

On tap at Broadway Brewery in Columbia, MO.
A - Poured a jet-black color with a one-finger, khaki colored head of foam. It left sudsy rings of lace on the glass.
S - Good roasty aroma with a touch of pine.
T - Roasty with chocolate notes, caramel and toffee. A slight grassy bitterness.
M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied lager with a dry finish.
O - This is another really good sessionable brew from The Civil Life.
