edit (4-26-05): I have had better service since this first review, so I raised my "service score".

The Hopleaf's beer chalk board is almost enough to make a beer lover faint. The beers are scrawled over three boards and are grouped by breweries and countries. The belgian section is breathtaking. There are lots of beers in this place.

The decor on the walls is also pretty neat. There are lots of signs of belgian breweries hanging from the wall, and the bar seems to have lots of character.

The beers seemed to be in great shape. The tap selections were poured into the proper glass, and everything was fine.

The problem I found with the Hopleaf was the service. The bartenders here basically acted as though they wouldn't care if you were living or dead. I'm usually pretty forgiving of bad service, but rude service is a different matter entirely. The bartender never cracked a smile, and he never responded to my polite 'thanks' after bringing me another beer.

We tried a bread and cheese plate, and the bread was outstanding. The cheese was nice too, and complimented our belgian drafts.

Overall I would say this is a definate 'must see'. But just don't expect decent service. I have seen better service from a big city bus driver than the bartenders here.

In town very briefly and here because I was looking for a great Chicago beer bar. The physical place is nice, the staff is very knowledgable and friendly (which in my mind can make or break a place) but the tap selection is just ok. Bottle selection is solid. Enjoyed the Stone Hibiscuscity, Bockor Cuvée des Jacobins Rouge and Three Floyds Zombie Dust. As for food, the duck reuben is excellent! Skål!

Hopleaf is a great beer bar. Decor is about what I expected: Lots of brick and wood and simple, industrial-looking barstools in the back. This is a big place with lots of nooks and crannies. I love the vintage beer signs hanging throughout.
We arrived at Hopleaf on Sat. evening and the place was packed. Still, I had a Zombie Dust in my mitts within 5 mins. of arrival and had a seat at a bar shortly thereafter. The friendly hostess came and got us when a table was ready (about 15 mins.) and we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the evening. Amazing beers, fabulous food, great service. The legendary mussels steamed in Belgian Wit are fabulous. Among us, we had the salmon, duck reuben, and organic brisket. All were excellent.
I knew which beers I wanted so ordered straight away each time. The two people with me were less certain and got plenty of help and samples from the helpful barkeeps.
The beers are priced on par with most other places. the food is pricey but worth it.
I will make this a regular stop whenever I'm in Chicago.
Top notch all the way.

Just an incredible selection of beer and some tough to find gems--fresh Zombie Dust and some great Belgians amongst others. Super laid back. Will go again. Easy red train from downtown.

Stopped by hopleaf on a recent trip to Chi town. Just prior to hopleaf I stopped by a modestly impressive bottle shop located nearby (unsure of the name, same intersection)
The bar had an English pub kind of feel walking in, though it was weird being carded at the door before it was even nighttime (midday on a Friday). The bar seats were generally taken, but it was easy enough to grab a table, which had the draught and bottle menus available.
There were many local options available, but I gravitated towards the 3 floyds options, which included zombie dust, yum yum, and fantasmo - all for $6/pint. Yum Yum was a new option for me, so I requested a sample first (1/4 oz pour into a highball glass - barely enough to coat my palate or to get much aroma) and eventually I settled on that option for my full pour. Service was reasonably quick and it was already busy (considering the time of day and location - kind of far North compared to other options). There were no issues using card/closing tab, getting water, using the bathroom, etc.
Unfortunately I didn't stay for a meal.
Overall I'd say this is a worthwhile stop. The taps were selective (including some STL love with their perennial collab hopfentea) and I was able to grab a pint of a fresh local beer I was actually interested in trying with general ease (and for a reasonable price).
Protip: check out some amazing viet food @ tank noodle beforehand and make the reasonable walk from there
