edit (4-26-05): I have had better service since this first review, so I raised my "service score".
The Hopleaf's beer chalk board is almost enough to make a beer lover faint. The beers are scrawled over three boards and are grouped by breweries and countries. The belgian section is breathtaking. There are lots of beers in this place.
The decor on the walls is also pretty neat. There are lots of signs of belgian breweries hanging from the wall, and the bar seems to have lots of character.
The beers seemed to be in great shape. The tap selections were poured into the proper glass, and everything was fine.
The problem I found with the Hopleaf was the service. The bartenders here basically acted as though they wouldn't care if you were living or dead. I'm usually pretty forgiving of bad service, but rude service is a different matter entirely. The bartender never cracked a smile, and he never responded to my polite 'thanks' after bringing me another beer.
We tried a bread and cheese plate, and the bread was outstanding. The cheese was nice too, and complimented our belgian drafts.
Overall I would say this is a definate 'must see'. But just don't expect decent service. I have seen better service from a big city bus driver than the bartenders here.

A: my visit was a post-lunch Monday affair, during Spring Break; bar area quietly full.
Perhaps a weekend or night time visit would be completely packed.
Q: This place is rather clean, nicely decorated, high standard fare,
S: Johnny (Jersey guy w/red beard) was extremely friendly and helpful.
He offered pairing suggestions and his own personal touch to almost
every beer + food item on the menus.
S: The food and beer are top notch gastropub. A casual craft beer
fan or foodie will absolutely enjoy this spot.
F: Chose appetizer for my 1st visit: Sausage variety plate with white beans
in a bourbon barrel aged sauce and panchetta. The aroma and flavors
were so incredibly divine, I didn't want the dish to end.
V: The only mild drawback is the price; not for me, honestly. two 1/2 pints + 1 pint
plus an appetizer was $30 including tip. Life is about quality experiences, this was
so worth the wait, money, and time.
O: Hopleaf has been my #1 food/beer overlooked destination
in Chicago. Chicago born & raised. Treat yourself to this
mighty fine craft beer spot!

We only got appetizers on our visit as we were more interested in the beer. Food was good but not great. The beer selection however, was amazing. Everything was fairly priced. It took me twenty minutes of menu review to finally pick a beer. They were fairly busy (it was a Sunday afternoon) and the service was very good and the staff was knowledgeable about their beer selections.
