The bottle list is about 80% or more the same as the Belgian bar I worked in Philly. That is to say, for a Belgo-centric bar and beer selection, it has most if not all of the minimum of what should be there. The other 20% being whatever local selections they had.

I visited on a Wednesday toward the end of July. Pretty hip, lively atmosphere. Jazz playing. Seems like a majority of the decor and design in the main front room has a bit of a 40s(?), maybe French/Euro cafe or soda-fountain/drug-store look and vibe. The back of the bar looks genuinely antique, art deco-ish - has some hard wear on the flat-tops flanking the register in the middle. The whole inner bar rail is drain gates - love it!

There's also a sizable back room (that was devoid of people when I was there) and multiple staircases and hallways going down to the toilets. Got a little lost. The whole place was fairly tidy and had an generations-old feel to it that I dig.

Seems like they would also feature a small, decent cocktail list, but I somehow doubt they do. Not that that's pertinent to the review here. Had a Dupont draft, poured flat, right to the top in a footed goblet. I do enjoy head...

Not sold on the quality of personality in the staff though - a bit aloof, a bit like they were 'doing their job' or they either didn't care for the crowd or wanted to be elsewhere. I have days like that myself.

Nothing about this place that would make me want to revisit. Not even the odd, rare draft. I found their draft list extensive, but rather unexciting. But, like I said, I'm quite familiar with all the Belgian bars in Philly, so Hopleaf offered me nothing new.

One of the iconic Chicago craft bars. Booths and small tables to the right after entering and the main bar to the left. Keep on the path to a back area with more tables for dining. Upstairs has a smattering of tables as well as a small bar. This place used to be a nightmare to get into on weekend nights but now with the new addition, while still busy, it seems you can always find a place to relax somewhere.

The lighting is fairly dark, the air smells of garlic & mussels, and the taplist is expansive. One thing I've always appreciated about Hopleaf is the spectrum of styles they always seem to have on draft. I don't care what style of beer you're in the mood for you are surely going to find a good example represented. The draft prices are very fair and the markup on most bottles is reasonable. The service is always A+. These guys enjoy their job and it shows. Everyone I've ever spoken to at Hopleaf is quick to laugh, easy to talk to, and somehow make their job look easy even when slam packed.

Go there!

Hopleaf in Chicago was recommended by a woman sitting next to me while at Russian River in Santa Rosa CA. Good thing, my wife and I really enjoyed it. Would get a 5 but they don't do flights. However, I have to say that the 2 bartenders who took care of us, spared no effort in serving us tasters of anything we asked for and some things they just thought we should try. Not very interested in bottles, we travel to drink draft beer from local breweries. In this regard, hop leaf was excellent. Had salad and venison meatballs at the bar, both very tasty. As usual, when we tipped with fresh bottles of Pliny, the bartenders were appreciative and bought us a round.

PS, went on Monday night, therefore not very busy. The bar was full, most of the tables occupied, but I'm sure that other nights it's crazy busy and we would not have gotten the service we did.

PPs. Many Chicago places used beermenus.com to advertise the beer on tap. Not always up to date, but it helped us decide which places we wanted to visit.

In town very briefly and here because I was looking for a great Chicago beer bar. The physical place is nice, the staff is very knowledgable and friendly (which in my mind can make or break a place) but the tap selection is just ok. Bottle selection is solid. Enjoyed the Stone Hibiscuscity, Bockor Cuvée des Jacobins Rouge and Three Floyds Zombie Dust. As for food, the duck reuben is excellent! Skål!

Hopleaf is a great beer bar. Decor is about what I expected: Lots of brick and wood and simple, industrial-looking barstools in the back. This is a big place with lots of nooks and crannies. I love the vintage beer signs hanging throughout.
We arrived at Hopleaf on Sat. evening and the place was packed. Still, I had a Zombie Dust in my mitts within 5 mins. of arrival and had a seat at a bar shortly thereafter. The friendly hostess came and got us when a table was ready (about 15 mins.) and we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the evening. Amazing beers, fabulous food, great service. The legendary mussels steamed in Belgian Wit are fabulous. Among us, we had the salmon, duck reuben, and organic brisket. All were excellent.
I knew which beers I wanted so ordered straight away each time. The two people with me were less certain and got plenty of help and samples from the helpful barkeeps.
The beers are priced on par with most other places. the food is pricey but worth it.
I will make this a regular stop whenever I'm in Chicago.
Top notch all the way.

Just an incredible selection of beer and some tough to find gems--fresh Zombie Dust and some great Belgians amongst others. Super laid back. Will go again. Easy red train from downtown.
