Notes/Commercial Description:
This is a very hop forward American style IPA. Brewed with Pale, Vienna, Munich and wheat malt for a solid base for all American hops, focusing mainly on the variety “Citra.” Citra hops are a relatively new variety introduced in 2008. It was bred as a hybrid of a number of different hops, including Hallertauer Mittelfrüh, U.S. Tettnanger, East Kent Golding, Bavarian, Brewers Gold, and other unknown hops. The resulting hop, Citra, has a distinct citrusy and tropical fruit flavor and aroma. In Citra ass down we used American Columbus for bittering and 11# of Citra at the end of the boil for late kettle addition flavor and aroma. Then we added 6 more pounds Citra and 5# Centennial post fermention for aroma. Rebrewed for your tasting pleasure!

22oz bottle poured into a globe.

A: Golden in color, very hazy. Head settles quickly, even after a more vigorous pour. Spotty lacing.

S: Puréed mango, ruby red grapefruit juice, blood orange, pineapple, wet leaves. Honey, thin runny caramel, and light toast. Slight prick of alcohol.

T: Lots of earthy hop tastes up front. Wet leaves. Spicy and oily. Ruby red grapefruit builds. Ample bitterness. Lighter notes of tangerine and pineapple in the background. Sticky bud. Estery. Spike of alcohol. Toasty, honeyed malts. Long, clamping bitter finish of grapefruit and oily herbs.

M: Medium-thick. Smooth and silky texture. supporting carbonation has a light scrubbing effect. Mild alcohol warmth. Great texture.

O: This beer was getting some word of mouth hype around here, but I find myself a bit underwhelmed. It's good but not great. Body and texture are great, but I don't feel that it really showcases the citra strain in all it's glory.

a grossly underwhelming beer, especially at 15 bucks a bottle, thats offensive, and like the brutal prices on the other stuff from against the grain that recently came to colorado, its a brutal quality to price ratio, and i cant imagine them making any splashes in this market with this stuff at these prices. citra is such a fun hop, so distinct and lemony and tropical and loaded with all the stuff we love about hops, but this yeast thick hazy orange beer is weighty with grain overbalance, and seems to have a lot more bitterness (read early kettle hops) than it does aromatic or juiciness (thats dry hopping usually). a seemingly sloppy effort made to appeal to the high end beer drinker, this cant pass at that level. its fine ipa, good even by some standards, but at that price we expect miracles. pliny for heavens sake is only five or six bucks a bottle, tis is downright unreasonable. thick in feel even though the bubbles are fine, way more leftover yeast than is necessary, and the bitterness of the hops overrides any unique citra features. not real happy with this one, hopefully others thought more highly of it.

Poured at the Forecastle Music Festival in Louisville into a plastic cup...

Nice orange pour with a thin head that slowly fades away to some light lacing.

The aroma features citrus and pineapple and maybe a little biscuit.

The taste is citrus right up front, a little hit of pineapple as well followed by a dry finish that is slightly piney. As it warms, I also get a little of the sweet malt. But it's mostly OJ with a kick.

Mouthfeel seems medium with a slightly sticky aftertaste.

All in all, really glad I got to try this very tasty beer. Would happily drink it again.

22 oz bottle. Pours very hazy golden yellow with a big rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is biscuity malts and sweet fruity, piney hops.

The flavor is biscuity malts and some fruit with bitter grassy piney hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some sharp carbonation.

Overall, a decent DIPA, but way overpriced at 16 bucks a bomber.

Big citrusy tropical fruit nose from the hops over a solid malt backbone.
Pours hazy gold under a somewhat thin bone-white foam cap.
Following a sweet malt introduction citrus hops dominate the palate with citrus rind bitterness balanced by tropical fruit and melon. Dries on the finish and finishes with a long lingering citrusy bitterness.
Very smooth creamy medium full body supported by fine soft carbonation.
