Notes/Commercial Description:
An India Pale Ale featuring Nelson Sauvin hops. Named after the Sauvignon Blanc grape, is a variety of hop developed and grown in New Zealand. It has a strong fruity flavor and aroma that is described as resembling white wine, or fresh crushed grapes or gooseberries. Some reviewers of this hop perceive the fruitiness as being very tropical with descriptions including passion fruit, tangerines, and grapefruit. These hops are organic and are about 4 times as expensive as our normal American varieties.

Pours a light golden color with a little bit of amber to it. It's quite cloudy. The head is just a shade or so off white. Medium thick blanket of foam. Pretty good retention and some nice lacing. Very pleasant aroma dominated by the fruity, white grapey Nelson Sauvin flavor. It's a sweet and decently juicy smell. Some grass, tropical fruits, herbs. Simple malt sugariness in the background. Taste starts with sweet light malt backing big Nelson Sauvin hop flavors. Peaches, white grapes, pineapple, grass, raspberries. Light to medium bitterness. Light mouthfeel. Solid beer. Listed as 8.2% abv on the label of this bottle - there seem to be a few different numbers floating around.

Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma offers some nice sweet fruitiness (grapes, berries, melons) and a touch of toasted bread. Very nice. Flavor is a huge letdown; tons of alcohol bury the flavors that are supposed to be there. A medium bodied, somewhat crisp mouthfeel. Overall, love nelson sauvin hops and had to give this try. Really wanted to love this beer and aroma teased me that I would. Unfortunately, there is just way too much alcohol present and that completely ruined this beer for me. Will not drink again and right now am so disappointed in this that I am kinda turned off from Against the Grain as a whole. Got one bottle of Kentucky Ryed Chiquen in my fridge and if that beer isn't at least really good, I might be done with this brewery. At their prices, the quality of their beer just does not meet their asking prices.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense white head with reduces to a small foamy cap that lingers. Light spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big peach, passion fruit, mango, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, pineapple, floral, grass, pine, honey, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, citrus rind, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of grassy/pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, citrus rind, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate malt sweetness; with a crisp malt/bitterness balance and some light astringent bitterness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice DIPA. All around good complexity and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
