"Stejar De Esenta Tare." I guess that means "Hardwood" or "Of Strong Essence" in Romanian? But this seems to be some kind of rugby cobranding, so I think the can I'm looking at is Stejar Strong. The ABV matches anyway - 7.00%. "Caracter Masculin" - awesomely sexist marketing. 14.5 degrees plato.

50cl can acquired at a Shop and Go supermarket in Bucharest and served cold into an unbranded bierkrug in me friend's gaff there. Reviewed live. Expectations are average given the brewery - SAB Miller / Ursus.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 2.5 fingers wide. White in colour. Subpar thickness (i.e. it's too thin). Weak. Okay complexion and consistency. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Retention is below average - about 1 minute.

BODY: Clear translucent copper of average vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears adequately carbonated. There are no obvious egregious flaws. Not unique or special. Standard for the style.

AROMA: Generic helles malt sweetness is all I pick up on. It's light in terms of strength.

TASTE/TEXTURE: Weak and light. Generic helles malts. Clean barley. Some artificial malty sweetness. It's a biteen syrupy, and is definitely too thick for the lack of flavour. Overcarbonated. Smooth and wet.

There's just not any real flavour here. It's insipid and boring. The syrupy helles malt flavour which dominates is unpleasant. I don't like it much.

To its credit, it's not watery or adjunct-y like many poor beers in the style.

OVERALL: Downable but low quality. This is pretty typical macroswill. I wouldn't get it again. Avoid.

Oh no, another Ursus Beer!

Pours a ruddy, amber tinged gold colour, lighter than I expected. Good head, thick and frothy malted-milk colour. Some coarse bubbled carbonation.

Resiny, slightly metallic on the nose. Hint of medicinal sweetness. Not much else, and nothing that I've got so far has really pleased me. Not great.

There is this sticky, unpleasant yeasty character which lingers long after the rest of the palate has dies away. It's quite unpleasant.

Otherwise, the taste is actually pretty bland - surprising considering it could have had a harsh alcohol sting to it. Lightly bitter, a little resiny again, and then the yeast clogging up your sinuses. Mouthfeel is flat too.

It's not good. It's just another lame horse from the Ursus stable. It doesn't have the harsh alcohol you'd expect from a badly made high-grav brew, but that hardly matters, as it has so little to offer anyway.

As my fellow BA ChainGangGuy notes consistently, there's a really unpleasant finish which seemingly permeates all the Ursus range. I think Ursus is to Romania what Carlton and United is to Australia. There's a certain unpleasant character to all their beers that makrs it out, even despite the other changes in recipe.

AndoBrew brought back a shlew of Romanian beers from his recent European excursion. I'm told Romanian beer can be a real special treat. Here's hoping!

Apperance: Pours a clear, golden body with a full, sudsy white head.

Smell: Cereal sweetish aroma with some floral hops plus a dash of booze plus more than a dash of chemicals.

Taste: Vague cereal flavor with a subdued sweetness. A burning, caustic alcohol flavor you can only find on the bottom shelf of a liquor store. Dry, lacquer-tasting finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: At beast, it might just be tolerable, but that unpleasant finish is a total deal breaker.
