Ursus is pretty good for what it is, a simple East European beer. Its quite crisp and really needs to be ice cold. Its not pretentious and is well suited for quaffing after hard labor. Some colleagues brought a case back from a trip to Romania and it languished for months in a fridge until we busted it open after a particularly arduous assignment. It was a pleasant surprise. Its a refreshing lager. Its quite light in color. It has a sharp, hoppy aftertaste, with more hops character than any other beer from the region that I've had.

Ursus Premium has a medium, white head, a clear, bubbly, straw appearance, and some light lacing left behind. The aroma is pungent- sweet biscuit and cracker, and the flavor is the same, with a light-to-medium, grassy hop bitterness closing out the sip. Mouthfeel is almost medium, and Ursus Premium finishes crisp, refreshing, and delicious. One of the best mass-produced lagers I’ve ever tasted.

Poured from the 330ml bottle into a pint glass. Body is a pale golden color, topped by a small, bright white head that doesn't have much staying power. Aroma of pale malt, a touch of hops, and a moderate amount of adjunct and skunkiness. Palate is characteristic of a nice and tasty Euro lager - a crispness from the tangy Euro hops and a nice, mellow pale malt backbone. Body is light enough not to interfere with the somewhat delicate flavors of a Euro lager, while also not being too thin. I could see myself drinking more than a few of these.

Pours a cold hazed lemon yellow brew.

Smell is grain and herbal hops. Supporting scents of malt, grass, lemon and a bit of spiciness.

Taste is sweet herbal and sharply bitter for the style. Biscuit and herbal hop and its bitterness dominate this brew. Far stronger flavored than the likes of Heineken or Beck’s.

Mouthfeel is OK.

I give this a good drinkability score for being so strongly hopped and aggressive. A ballsy version of the European Pale Lager. This would be an excellent choice for a beer to pair with strongly flavored foods.

11/24/04- Purchased at Belltramo's in Menlo Park, CA

Appearance- Nice golden colored pour with a huge white chunky head and excellent lacing.

Smell- Mostly malt. Maybe a bit of wheat scent. Nothing really jumps out besides that.

Taste- Tastes like a pils rather than a lager. Definite malt and some hops together make this a balanced beer. I do detect a metallic taste too it that detracts from the taste.

Mouthfeel- Lightly carbonated and a bit creamy make this go down relatively easily.

Drinkability- Not bad at all. If they got rid of that metal taste, it would be a pretty damn good session beer IMO. Better than I expected though.

Appearance – This one is bright yellow and clear in the body with a nice, big white foaming head that left little patches on top of the liquid.

Smell – The light grainy malt has the traditional lagered smooth aroma that I’ve come to appreciate in the style. The hops are almost pilsner-like but very laid back and definitely in the background.

Taste – The malts here are typical European grain with the lightest hint of sweetness at the end. I could have done without that, but otherwise this is not a bad beer.

Mouthfeel – This is not quite medium in the body. It has some light carbonation and is respectably smooth in between the cheeks.

Drinkability – Well, it’s not the prettiest girl in school but I still wouldn’t mind taking her out.

The beer pours the prototypical golden yellow lager color, the head the quintessential bright white color, frothy in texture and the size modest, the lace a thin sealing sheet upon the glass. Nose is the archetypal lager crisp and malt sweet, fresh, pleasing to both the eye and nose. Start is somewhat sweet, nice malt profile, top is thin but passable. Finish is stinging in its acidity and the hops apropos to the style, very dry aftertaste, but a decent drinking beer and a nice palate cleaner, a nice change of pace.

Pours a clear, pale blond color with a spotty, shortlived ivory head. A couple patches of lace stick to the glass. The aroma is light with grainy malt and some mint hops. The taste is sweet and uncomplicated. A decent amount of hops (keeping the style in mind) balance out the sweetness. The mouthfeel is light and highly carbonated. A slight bitterness makes up the short finish.

A very simple but easy to drink euro lager. No off flavors to me, so I'd suggest it as a lawnmower beer.

This beer has lots of carbonation and a big head that sticks around well in a tall pilsner glass. The aroma is fairly mild and non descript but smells pleasantly of beer with the accent on malt.
Ursus tastes malty and a little bitter. It's very well balanced and flavoursome and has many of the herbal characteristics and buttery notes that make the better Czech and German beers so delicious. There is, a hint of lemon and a nice lingering bitterness in the aftertaste.
A wonderful beer. This would be a much better choice than mass market, big name euro pale lagers.

Final note: At the end of the drink foam lacing clings to the sides and a head is still present. That's always a good sign! And the can says it's "all malt" which is usually a good thing too and bourne out by the enjoyable drinking experience.

Note: I've tried this a second time, bumped up the score and edited this review. It's really very good and I would say better than Pilsner Urquell or Budvar. Seems in the Czech, rather than German, pils tradition to me.

My mark out of one hundred would be 83.

Presentation: A half Litre brown glass bottle. The obverse label has a very regal look. A wide gold oval label with white hints and metallic red writing. Labeled as ‘Bere Cluj URSUS Fondat 1878 Pemium’. I guess this is the 125th Anniversary beer as the obverse label has a small celebratory decal that raise the profile of this Romanian marvel. Gold foil and a crown cap complete the presentation. Labeled as 5% ABV, and the Best Before Date is printed as 17.02.04 / 1.17.33, I hope the latter is the time of bottling and not the Best Before Date!

Appearance: A light golden body with straw hints. One dimensional with a Euro Lager appearance, the head is white but thin.

Nose: Smells interesting but not special. Saaz like Pilsner nose that is spoiled with a sweet bread and yeast aroma that is sticky.

Taste: Clean to start with but thin hops and a mild malt feel entrance the beer. It finishes with a mild hoppy feel that is diluted. Not much to write home about.

Mouthfeel: Average, neither thin nor wholesome. But well, just Average.

Drinkability: Not bad, goes down relatively easily but it’s not a quaffer.

Overall: Romanian Beer. Hmmm, something different, like Morris Dancing or Sky-Diving, you may want to try it once, for the hell of it, but not again. Do it to say you have!

Gold transparent. Grassy hop nose with a friendly enough - some say even hop season - but unfortunately out of steam quickly in the mouth. Grassy side a little poorly managed, through a little sweetness. Is lost in traditional Czech side that we win as hops. The body is weak rapidly, as the finish, which is a little sad. However the beer is quite nice and much nicer than many lagers.

Ursus Premium is a basic straw gold lager. It's clear, and standard-sized bubbles can be seen rising steadily towards the surface. The creamy bright white head holds fairly well, and it leaves some nice lacing behind at the outset.

The aroma offers a well-balanced combination of sweetish malt and spicy and gently floral hoppiness.

The mouthfeel is as might be expected, medium light and gently zesty with a standard carbonation.

The flavor echoes the aroma, almost to a T. (No one really knows where that saying came from, or what it refers to, but surprisingly everyone knows what it means). The malt may or may not contain some adjunct, as it is kind of sweetish, but perhaps that's just the firm bitterness keeping up with its duties. Regardless of why, it finishes with a touch of sticky residual malty sweetness. Fortunately that's slightly balanced by some minor residual spiciness from the hops, but it's not quite enough.

Final analysis: pretty average. It beats light beer, and it beats some cheap American macro swill, but beyond that it just doesn't cut the muster(d?).

Got it in can,i guess less better then in glass.

A - Nice big white head, pale orange color, few bubbles. Foam lasting more then few minutes.
S - Light citrus notes, pale malt. Nothing special in it.
T/M - Taste is more then decent, high bitter aftertaste, very close to Czech pilsner. Maybe a bit adjunct aftertaste, not so pleasant after you drink more then 2 cans. Also not so malty taste, but there is some decent amount of barley.
O - I know this is classic industrial EPL,but must admit that they made it more then fine.

500ml green bottle. Consume before: 16/11/11.

It pours a pale gold with a foamy white head. Typical and bland.

Smell is luckily not skunky. It isn't much though. Some honey notes and an actually decent hop aroma, there just needs to be more of it.

The taste is slightly tart with an okay hop bite. It is mostly malt, just a very bland malt. The hops are mostly just bitter with a hint of herbal character.

Run of the mill EPL, though not a bad one.

Served in a pilsner glass, the beer pours a light golden color with a very small white head. Not much of an aroma, all I could smell was grain and some grassy hops. It tastes the same way to me, no sweetness at all, just a sour/bitter grainy taste. Mouthfeel is light, and the beer is crisp. Drinkability is OK, but not great. Just an average beer, IMO. It's drinkable, but there's plenty of better choices out there.

A - Clear straw with a solid head of white foam.
S - Floral hops and light grainy malt.
T - A bit coarsely bitter style for a pale lager, with some husky grain and lemon.
M - Light bodied and fizzy. Fairly dry.
D - Par for the coarse euro lager. Fairly drinkable, but not exciting.
