(another one on tap from City Beer Store, SF - saw it a bunch of other spots in town)

This is a solid American Brown.... nice, dark chestnut color, clean, bit of spongy head w/o endurance.... the aromas suggest day-old brown bread, perhaps a touch of esters to brighten it up, but little-to-no hops (that's what I like in this style!).... A roasty, tough-crusted brown bread does come across on the palate with a slight dark, hardwood flavor as well - all malt here, enough caramel to add some complexity and, again, no hoppiness of note, perhaps a touch of its bittering.... wonderfully clean-drinking with more than a little gummy, crystal-malt roundness in the body....

Not a bad brown ale at all! Malt-dominant, as I prefer.... I still feel it needs a little more malt complexity (they took it this far...) and more of a lasting, dirty finish....I may have to sample this again when I'm out that way.

16oz can poured into a Golden Road Grand Opening tumbler glass.

The beer pours a medium burgundy color, hues of garnet, ruby and dark amber, fairly opaque but with a touch of clarity, plenty of bubbles dancing in the glass with a fizzy, but taut khaki head that has low retention but yields a fair amount of lace. The aroma is of lightly roasted malts, faint bitter coffee, light bittersweet chocolate, hearty bread and a bit of caramel, nice balance between the bitter and sweet aromas. The flavors mirror well, plenty of roasted malt, burnt chocolate, thick, rich dark grains, caramel, brown sugar and a nice flavor of roasted coffee bean, though I don't believe coffee to be an adjunct. Roasty, bitter, sweet, there is a nice balance and nice complexity as well. The mouthfeel is okay, it's a bit thinner than I'd like, carbonation is moderate but higher than expected, it feels a bit prickly, but it does coat the tongue well and the finish is very easy, a touch of dryness.

Verdict: A nice brown ale from Golden Road, definitely a worthy showcase of the style. It's quite sessionable at just 5.5% but brings forth all the requisite qualities of a nice, dark, sipping beer. I definitely enjoyed this one and would love to have this again in a cooler fall month.

Pours a ruby brown hue with a thicket of tan head, forms fine even lacing speckled around the sides of my glass. Aroma has a great malt presence, rolling cereal grains going on nutty character with some notes of dark fruits vinous or raisin qualities and herbal hops in the backend. Flavor has a smooth malt profile, herbal nutty upfront perfect cohesive light end of the complexity spectrum especially for a brown ale. Mouthfeel was medium bodied even smooth carbonation very nice drinking beer, overall something I'm glad that I got to try. Thanks again to my pal deford out in Cali he has some access to great beers especially in 16 ounce pounders like this one!
