This is Golden Road's collaboration with Deschutes. "Scotch Ale with Rye" according to the menu at Golden Road's pub. Served on-draught there into a generic snifter. 20.5 OG / 4 FG. Reviewed from notes taken on Sunday. Expectations were higher than normal for Golden Road given Deschutes' involvement.
A: Pours a two finger froth head of khaki colour. Disappointingly thin. Okay creaminess. To be honest, the head looks a bit watery. Good retention - about 3 minutes.
Body colour is a dull muted caramel. Murky. Opaque. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.
Sm: Scotch ale malts, vienna malt, brown malts, cream. Not detecting any rye or spiciness. No alcohol is detectable. Grainy. Muted overall. Biscuity. Maybe some dead yeast. A rather restrained light aroma overall.
T: Malt forward, with toffee, milky notes, and generic Scotch ale malts. A bit grainy. No toasted malt character comes through. Cream. A hint of stonefruit - fleeting plum, perhaps. Disappointingly muted. Kind of bland for a Scotch ale. I expected much more complexity and subtlety given Deschutes' involvement, but this is more the bland boring work I've come to expect from Golden Road. Not much happening here. No yeast comes through. I do get some alcohol. Terrible depth of flavour. Horrid flavour duration. Balance is mediocre.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Average thickness and creaminess. Overcarbonated. Very run of the mill and lazy. Not at all tailored specifically to the flavour profile.
Dr: Drinkable but forgettable. I thought Deschutes might be able to elevate Golden Road from its mediocrity; it appears I was wrong. Unrefreshing. Alcohol is obvious. Mundane for the style. Not recommended.
