Bottle (from stfun) Appearance: Opaque black with short lasting off-white head

Aroma: Fruity, alcohol, chocolate

Taste: Fruity, banana undertones, with slightly bitter dark chocolate flavors

Palate: Full mouthfeel, slightly chalky, unique cocoa like bitterness, but finishes sweet and dry.

Overall: Interesting porter that brings in some elements that make it quite enjoyable and different than "american" porters.

4 oz pour at tasting even. Growler. Review from notes.

A- Thin brown body with light head. Not too deep brown
S- Nice balance hop malt, hops and some woodsyness
T- Smokey malts with just a bit of hops for balance. Pretty good overall profile and balance
M- A bit on the thin side, but not a major detractor

O- Solid, straight forward porter with smokey tones

Pours a dark ruby, with a small head of tan bubbles. Minimal lacing.

Nose is roasty and fruity, and the body is light, even watery.

Flavor is toffee up front, with some roasty chocolate in there as well. Maybe this isn't super unique or standout, but it does go down smoothly, and Backyard Porter is a faithful and flavorful English-style porter.

Decent porter from Fountain Square brewing. Pours a dark mahogany brown with a medium tan head and thin lacing on the glass. Smells of coffee and dark chocolate and sweet caramel malts. Very rounded mouthfeel, not overly coating. Tastes of chocolate up front, medium roast coffee on the back, caramel on the sides with light bittering hops on the aftertaste. As a fan of English style ales, this hits the mark. Solid session beer for the porter fan. As a note I will add that some of the beers in the six pack were complete foamers, just so happens this one did not explode. Lots of variance from beer to beer. Still, this one was a winner. Will try the little lady's later and see how she fares with it. Subject to re-review.

Into a tumbler glass it immediately fills the glass with foam. Trying again, and "beer rinsing" the glass first, it pours with only half a glass of foam. Color is a dark brown with some minor clarity around the edges when backlit. Lots of foam, coats the glass in sheets. The overcarbonation is a potential sign of infection though.

Aroma holds nothing out of the ordinary. Roasted malt, a little chalky.

Astringent tartness and some weird solvent minerality show up first. Dry roasty malt underneath, but it's marred by the off flavors and seltzery overcarbonation. Will try this again someday to re-evaluate, hopefully this was an isolated case.

Thanks Howard!

On tap at the Red Lion Grog House. Served in 16 oz glass w/ Fountain Square Brewing logo.

Pours a deep brown with a creamy tan head that looks delicious. The smell was fragrant, almost earthy, yet slight off. Roasted coffee comes to mind, but there's an industrial whiff to it also. The mouthfeel is different. The carbonation stands out noticeably and not for the better. Full, yet fizzy and inconsistent. The coffee taste comes to the fore and so does the bitterness. The problem I had with this beer is that the bad carbonation notes and the bitterness linger too long in the brut(al) finish. I can love a beer that's slightly off, but this one was too far off for me. A drain pour.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It is brown to dark amber in color with amber highlights with an inch or two of tan head. It looks more like a brown ale than a porter.

S - The aroma is chocolate and cocoa.

T - The taste begins with some cocoa. Then I get some roasted malt. It finishes with a bitter burnt flavor.

M - Medium

O - I kept thinking I was drinking a brown ale. The burnt finish was the only thing that reminded me that I wasn't.

On draft at McKenzie River off of 82nd St.

This arrived a medium bodied coca brown in color on the verge of black with a one finger cream colored head. The nose features slight coffee, slight dark chocolate, and bitter roast. It solid, more bitterness than most. The flavors feature coffee and cream first and foremost. The chocolate is light subtly sweet. It finishes off dry and bitter. It drinks smoothly and between light and medium in body. Overall this is a solid beer and a nice first experience from this brewer. I'll try more of their beers in the future.

Pours a soapy, tan head that has nice persistence and laces well. A nice, acidic, coffee-like aroma. Deep, burnt umber color. A bitter, acidic start changes into a very robust coffee flavor. Peaks in a medium bitterness with toasted malt. Finish is lingering toasted malt.

This is pretty nice. A great, robust toasted malt/coffee porter with a nice, smooth mouthfeel.
