Yeast gone wild.

Advertised as hop forward in flavor but not in bitterness, the flavor profile was almost the exact inverse of that, and loaded with hints of high alcohols and spicy yeast esters that made this downright unpleasant to drink. The hop flavors were present, but masked and melding with the sweet caramel malt character, but the bitterness was pervasive and rough.

Really didn't taste at all like the beer they set out to make, but rather one that the fermentation got away from them on and perhaps then sat too long on the shelf. Needs to be cleaned up substantially.

As an IPA fan and hops grower, I'll gladly reach for an "off the charts" shocker to affirm the aesthetic joy of hops. But when it comes to drinking something more mortal, particularly when sharing a hoppy beer with friends who've never experienced the pleasure and am in the process of trying to win over new converts from the Pleasantville-like black and white boredom of mass produced Beer(TM), I want to share something that shows the profound dimensionality of hops -- a representational bitterness, a fresh aromatic finish with a touch of citris and other complexities Beer(TM) drinkers have never encountered before.

Keg Creek's IPA fits that bill. It won't win any competition for being aggressive in any category; its well balanced in malt, with a very slight trace the sugars that is accessible to potential hops converts. It's very well balanced in the bitter hops, being just slightly aggressive (a very clean citrous with a trace of grapefruit, very clean presence and finish without undesirable aftertaste), and has a finish of Columbus , Cascade and Chinook. It pours clean and has a healthy head, though not extreme. I've become a fan and keep it handy to show my hop-deprived friends the joy of what hops are all about, without shocking them and scaring them off with a much more aggressive representation.

The beer pours a deep amber and copper with chestnut tones. There is a short and thin head of off-white foam that does leave some sticky lacing.

The aroma is a tangy hop forward. There is lots of citrus and sweet, tall grass, with a bit of passion fruit.

The taste is equal parts citrus and caramel malt, with a strong sun tea and lemon finish. The ending is quite bitter and adds a grapefruit element and a touch of spiciness.

It refreshes in the same way that tonic water does, it's so dry it's wet. It is medium bodied with a just right carbonation. An interesting take on an IPA that is worth trying.

The Keg Creek IPA is noted as not being the "in-your-face" bitterness of a lot of American IPAs. I would fully agree with that statement. The hop notes are subtle with Cascade as the most prominent. Not terribly "pale" either. The color is more orange-amber than pale yellow. Carmel malt and Cascade make this IPA an easy quaffer even at 6.4%. The mouthfeel may feel a little thin and with the lack of hop it made this beer not as exciting as the Breakdown Brown or the Sharp Street Stout. I would love to see them make a Double IPA and see where that goes.
