Deep reddish brown pour with a 1/4 tan tan head. Leaves some lacing on the glass. Not much on the aroma except for slight chocolate. Mouthfeel starts out creamy and finishes sticky with a mild astringency. Very chocolatey with some coffee notes; is mildly bitter and slightly cloying. Overall it drinks smoothly, but is on the lower end of abv for a ris, and emphasizes the chocolate flavor over the coffee which I prefer In stouts. I liked it a lot and I enjoyed the fact that it is sold in cans.

As a retired U.S. Navy sailor, I truly miss getting underway. I mentioned this to a buddy on Veterans Day & he suggested riding ferries as a way to get water under my feet again! What a great idea! I took Amtrak to Penn Station (NYP), transferred to the LIRR, rode out to Port Jefferson, NY and took the ferry across Long Island Sound to Bridgeport, CT to watch back-to-back nights of AHL hockey before coming home. I also scored some CANs of beer for The CANQuest (tm) while I was at it.
From the CAN: "Overboard (ō-ver-bôrd) 1. Adv. - over the side of a ship or a boat; especially into the water. 2. Idiom - Go overboard A. To be extremely enthusiastic B. To go to extremes 3. PJBC - The act of aging a Russian Imperial Stout 'over' the 'boards' of a bourbon barrel for four months. (See 'Boom Boom')"; "Comrade likes it in the CAN"; "Small Batch - Big Taste". I really dig the underlying brick-red hammer & sickle! Is anyone else watching "The Americans"?
The Crack! was as loud as Joe Stalin would allow & he cautioned me not to go Overboard on the Glug, lest I be sent to a Siberian gulag as punishment. I got a brief finger of deep-tan/light-brown head that quickly retreated to wisps. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing precisely ZERO light penetration. In another age, I would simply dip my quill-tip pen into this inky brew & use it to record the rest of my review on paper for my CANcestors to CANscribe for reference. Nose smelled heavily of bourbon! OMFG! I just bought a bottle of Rye Whiskey last night, but this makes me want to break that out as a follow-up. Mouthfeel was thick, rich and like a dollop of cream had been dropped onto my tongue. The taste was of dried dark fruits; semi-sweet chocolate; charred, smoky wood; bourbon & a slight tartness. Holy ... The alcohol was well-hidden, making it even smoother than it really needed to be. Finish was dry, slightly tart, with a lingering smokiness that caused me to check the house for smoldering fires. I kid you not, this really got into my sinus cavity & stuck. I was smelling burnt wood & kirschwasser everywhere!

Got in a BIF with beerloserLI. 12 ounce can into snifter, no can dating. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, toffee, dark bread, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, oak, light herbal, and roast/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roast/bready malt, oak barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, toffee, dark bread, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, oak, light herbal, and roast/yeast earthiness. Light herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, toffee, dark bread, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, oak, and roast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, oak barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an awesome oak aged Russian imperial stout style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, oak barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Nice pour, deep black, but only a thin tan head. Nose isn't powerful, get mostly roast. On the taste, the roastiness is strong, some chocolate and dark fruits. Very nice mouthfeel, thick yet smooth, a little more carbonation than I like on a RIS. Overall, a very nice beer - so far, my favorite from Port Jeff.
