These guys irked me a little bit by setting up a table at a festival and offering unlimited pours while prominently displaying their porter and barrel-aged porter and telling us they weren't available for tasting and wouldn't be opening the bottles they had on display either. Nevertheless the guys were nice enough and the oatmeal stout was on, so I did my best to deplete their reserves. Pours black with a small khaki head that settles down quickly and leaves a bit of lace on the glass. Nose packs roasted malt, milk and bittersweet chocolate, a decent hit of fresh coffee, and some raisiny dark fruit.

The flavor follows suit, with just a hint of the oatmeal adding some chewy, smooth texture. Again there's a combination of sweeter milk chocolate and more bitter cocoa notes, some coffee and fruit. The appealing, moderate sweetness of the beer dries up quite a bit in the finish, while bitterness lingers a little in the aftertaste. I got no booze at all and was surprised to find out later this was 9% ABV.

Medium-full bodied, fairly smooth and creamy, with just a bit of the chewiness imparted by the oatmeal. Pretty solid, deceptively powerful.

A - Super dark, milk chocolate colored head is creamy but relatively low. Ok lace. Body is black-brown with murky brown highlights.

S - Sweet malt, light roast, twang of bitter coffee. Soft, raisiny booze.

T - Smooth, sweet malt paired with a rolling, bitter roast. Chocolate gnosh and oatmeal center. Warm booze on the backend with a lingering woody bitterness.

M - Smooth, full body with a dry finish.

O - Surprisingly smooth for 9%. A solid stout from what's shaping up to be a solid new face on the local Long Island brew scene.

Growler into a Duvel tulip. Thanks to TheLostGringo for sending this my way as an extra.

A: Black body with a thin but persistent head of tan froth that leaves light lace. Not bad.

S: Sweet, spicy, and slightly tart. Gingerbread and graham cracker sweetness balances against tart cherry rind and lemon zest. Sweet and sour, in a pleasant but seemingly unintentional way.

T: Follows the nose. Sweet and spicy malt up front with tart fruit behind. Yogurty lactic acid and light char on the finish. I don't dislike drinking it, but it's definitely not to style.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation. Slick. Ok.

O: I really don't dislike this beer at all - I love sours, and this is enjoyable in many ways - but it's an abysmal failure for the style.

Cheers!

Pours a very deep brown color, almost black. The light brown head has moderate carbonation bubbles and settles into a light cap.

The aroma is of roasted barley and bakers chocolate. Caramel sweetness with a touch of scorched caramel. The aroma is nice but light.

Really nice chocolate flavor coming from this stout. The addition of the oatmeal really balances and smooths out the roasted barely and provides a good oatmeal stout flavor. There is also a breakfast blend strength coffee flavor. Some sour lemony notes pop through in the end.

Moderate feel but way beyond fizzy. This is a carbonation bomb. The stout is sweet on the palate and a bit sticky but the carbonation comes in and wipes that all away.

This is a very flavorful oatmeal stout but the carbonation is off the hook. I give props that the flavor still comes through against the carbonation. I like this beer but they got to get the carbonation under control, very un-stout like.

Great new school schooner tattoo bottle art. Viscous dark brown rimmed black color with an insta-skim head.

Smells like dark roast coffee with a sweet dark sugary thing - molasses-esque?

Initially disappointing Starboard stars with coffee up front and a bright dark fruit finish in back. Kinda thin. For a 9.2% oatmeal stout I was expecting a heartier, more flavorful experience. Dark coffee, roast malt and some cacao bitterness emerge as this beer warms up. Though not as full as I'd like the creaminess of the mouthfeel is great. A little undercarbonated.

It's a beer.

* Labeled as Starboard Stout

A - Black pour with a brown foam. Very active foam coming out of the bottle; noticabel carbonaiton. Settles quickly and slight lacing.

S - Notes of fudge brownies, cocoa powder, and roasted malts.

T - Nice toasted oat flavor. Has some sweetness of chocolate and maple sugar. Finishes with a hearty malt flavor.

M - Tastes thin and then hits your belly pretty thick. Easy to have a couple, but this is a rich oatmeal stout that sneaks up on you.

O - A nice stout from the local guys. Price is good ($7 a 25oz) and it holds up well to the others. Actuallt reminded me of the Blue Point oatmeal stout that I wish was easier to get.

A: great start: pitch black body with a towering head of dark foam; nothing clings to the glass as the head recedes

S: dark roasted malts, like espresso and burnt wood

T: the bitter astringence of alcohol and hops are a little harsh up front; some charred aftertaste; black espresso and burnt wood flavors dominant

M: didn't have the creaminess and smoothness I'd expected; medium weight, slick, low carbonation, some astringency

O: I'm a big stout drinker, but oatmeal stouts have evaded me for the most part, so perhaps some of my impressions are ignorant of the style's profile... That said, disappointed - not a smooth, creamy, rich beer, but rather tinny, thin, and harsh. Perhaps 9.0 is too high to go in an oatmeal stout? I've had Sam Smith's and Rogue's Shakespeare oatmeal stouts and found them to be far kinder and smoother.

Served in a mug.

Appearance: I poured this brew pretty hard and with its opaque thin black-brown body little bubbles to it and weak head maybe 1/8".

Smell: light chocolate and molasses, honestly it smells good but not very potent like some other oatmeal stouts.

Taste: It comes off a light chocolate with slight bitterness. I do mean slight, it's easy to drink where the taste isn't too overwhelming. It has a almost like a cake taste too it where it makes you feel a mellow sweetness to it. Almost like a light brown sugar.

Mouth: light to medium carbonation, could be a little heavier and not feel as much as an Irish stout. After-taste is well finished but the stickiness is blah. Something missing.

Overall: Not a bad beer, but given how much better it could be there's much more out there to try especially given the price. I would buy again and split it with a friend, maybe your best solution. Salud!
