@ NoDa

Dark brown to black color with a creamy covering. Smells of pine, Christmas trees, and minty hop greenness, subtle charred roasted malt, and general dankness. A blend of pine & roastiness in the mouth...chocolate and citrus rind. Not a tremendous amount of flavor from the hops, but they blend well with the malts so that nothing stands out in particular (in a good way). Everything just works together and the results are pretty satisfying. Medium bodied and bitter, but not overly aggressive. Solid stuff here.

There are only six other reviews previously and all accurate. If I get a chance at a bar, I will combo 1/3 Noda Coco Loco and 2/3 Hop Drop and Roll. This beer comes very close to that maybe with a tad bit less hops but a still good bite at the end. Surprisingly little foam from tap at Big Bens in Charlitte. A little swirl brings back the foam with a nice coffee malty smell. Clean dark look leads to an artistic malt hop mix, a little more malt in the front but more hoppy bite at the end. Smooth and levels off more of a clean taste rather than too robust.

On tap @ Revolution Pizza & Ale House (Charlotte, NC) on 3/11/12. Served in a pint glass.

Pours black, with a ½ finger of mocha colored foam. This stays rich and drenches the sides of the glass with sticky lace. The aroma smells of fresh leafy tones and green citrus flavors, while additional notes of light acrid coffee, cocoa, and toffee flood out across the back of the nose.

The taste is similar, with a green bitter bite up front that is buffered by sweet notes of cocoa and caramel. A flush of rather strong roasted coffee character comes out across the back with a burnt feel that lingers in the finish along with some leftover dry bitter pith. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm and crisp feel that segues into more of a silky creaminess along the back. Alcohol is generally well hid, mostly adding some extra intensity to the already strong hop profile here.

This was a VERY solid take on the Black Ale style, with a smooth and flavorful blend of bitter hops, coffee, and sweetness that never seemed to get too overly aggressive with any aspect of it. Man, I’d drink this any day!

Served from growler into a Mikkeller oversized wine glass. Poured a massively dark brown with a four finger creamy khaki colored head that subsided to a half finger very slowly. Maintained phenomal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruit, citrus, citrus hop, tangerine, and subtle banana. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, citrus, citrus hop, pine, pine hop, subtle tangerine, and subtle dark fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty nice brew. The aroma on this brew was quite complex and very inviting with loads of different elements going on in it. The flavor had a lot of these same elements, but it just wasn’t as great as the aroma made out. Quite tasty and really glad I got the chance to try this one with some help from the brewer! Tick.

Excellent. Had on draft. Very dark with dark tan colored head. Hoppy and roasted flavored in the nose. Tastes great. Strong roasted malt backbone but very floral, piney flavors. Well balanced. A great Black IPA.
