Appearance was a nice dark pitch with ruby times when held to light. Good roasty smell....bitter chocolate, faint touch of smoke, good roasty malts. Taste is bitter chocolate, burnt coffee, and muted hops. The coconut is non-existent, and that's what I liked so much about the original. Still a good beer, but there seems to be a lot of actual bitter coconut floating around in the beer. A good one time try. I'll go back to the original in the future.

Noda Imperial Coco Loco (‘regular’ Noda Coco Loco) 9.7 % (v. 6.3%) ABV 49 (v.43) IBU 41 (versus 32) SRM

Pour is nearly black; opaque with a durable tan head that leaves the glass rather thoroughly coated with sticky lacing. Deep, dark mahogany highlights at the edge reveal a clear beer.

Aroma: excellent but rather simple, featuring lots of dark roasted malts and a bit of sweet coconut.

T: Loads of very dark roasted malts with a trace of smoke. IBU seems a little bit higher than the 49 reported. Lik regular Coco Loco, marred by an overly bitter taste and too much burnt flavor from the malt. Very rich and moderately complex.

M: full body with soft. Low carbonation; limited harshness from the high ABV

O: Sampled back-to-back, this is a clearly improved version of the regular Coco Loco. It is smoother, creamier, more interesting and complex (thanks at least in part to the alcohol esters). Seems less burnt too. Both are very rich and rather extreme robust porters. Recommended.

Pours a somewhat murky deep roasted chesnut brown with a thinner light beige head atop that leaves a half ring of broken lace as it settles quickly.Aromas of sweet chocolate, roast and molasses, the coconut doesn't really play a role. The carbonation level doesn't seem to high with a light to medium feel for such a big beer.Mellow chocolate and brown sugar flavors with mild roast,it's not a real ballsy flavor profile, again the coconut isn't big but in the finish I get a light toasted coconut note.As I drink more the chocolate flavors become deeper and the alcohol creeps. Not bad but not great, the people are cool at NoDa so Iam not gonna say anything bad about this beer wich isn't that bad anyways.

Appearance: Pours out fudge brown with a really fizzy head and a few coconut floaties, to boot; the head fritters away rather quickly though it does leave some spotty lace behind

Smell: Roasty, with strong chocolate notes and just a whiff of coconut

Taste: Very roasty, up front, with a growing dark chocolate flavor building in the middle; hints of coconut appear just after the swallow and are slightly more pronounced in the finish; still the roast and chocolate flavors dominate through and through

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation; hides the alcohol well but watch out for the coconut floaties

Overall: I rather enjoyed this beer though I would prefer a little less roast and a little more coconut - the chocolate was just right

Pours a frothy, close to two finger head of deep tan color, mostly a tight weave of small bubbly foam with some dimpling, excellent retention and loads of stickiness to the wide streaks of lacing. The liquid itself is a murky brown to black, opaque, lots of little chunks floating about, most of them presumably coconut flakes, switches to a more yellow tint around the rims. The nose has a palpable roasted nature, coffee, chocolate, cocoa and, duh, coconut, touch of vanilla and molasses as well, has a dry grainy side too, at moments something like white grapefruit to orange pith, not quite leafy but does have the texture of an herbaceous penetration into the nostrils. Full-bodied, thick and kind of heavy, anchors itself to the tongue rather than flow through the mouth. The roast and toast even higher here, more bitter than sweet, little sweetness left in the coconut. Coffee, cocoa, mocha, and caramelized brown sugar. Allowing for this, does have a creamy mouthfeel and a soft carbonation. Touch of black licorice and orange spice, banana, peach, apricot fruit. The hops are there while woven into the total fabric. Energetic for the sake of being energetic through the finish, admire its moxie but sacrifices some balance.

Dark pitch black in color with a thin brown head. TONS of big floaties on this one which seemed strange for the style. Nose is dark chocolate, malty, a nice hint of the coconut is there. Tastes of dark slightly burnt chocolate and a nice sweet coconut flavor. Fairly thick body with a dark chocolate/coconut aftertaste.
