New Belgium Brewing Company (Fort Collins, CO) and NoDa Brewing Company (Charlotte, NC) have collaborated to bring you a unique brew from both breweries... the Funkaversary Belgian style sour ale. NoDa Brewing Company contributed their Seasonal Belgian Pale Ale, Monk's Trunks, some of which has aged for over 9 months in Chardonnay Barrels. The Monk's Trunks was blended together with New Belgiums' blonde base sour ale, Felix.
Appearance: Pours out with a clear copper color; the head never really forms all that well though it does create a ringlet that drips some lace
Smell: Oaky and vinous, with cakey malt and a hint of lemon and funk
Taste: Cakey malt, up front, with a growing tart character that is joined by the vinous oaky Chardonnay elements, in the middle; increasingly acetic, after the swallow, though the finish owes more to the Chardonnay barrels than it does to wild yeast funk; just a touch of vanilla in the aftertaste
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; somewhat puckery
Overall: Rather interesting, with a rather unusual vinous character that complements the sour tones
